Last week’s poll made one thing clear: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐛𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 — especially for newcomers to Canada who arrive with real experience, but very little clarity on how the system works here. And here’s the part that worries me most: Too many candidates hear “TEA” before they ever hear “apprenticeship.” Yet an apprenticeship — even for someone with years of overseas experience — can be incredibly valuable. It gives you: • Exposure to highly automated, advanced equipment • Training aligned with Canadian safety and industry standards • Guided mentorship from licensed tradespeople • A structured, supported transition into the workforce And this part is important: 𝐎𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞. It signals commitment, verified training, and hands-on experience in local systems — things that a TEA alone doesn’t always demonstrate. But here’s where the real issue lies: 𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡. Something I'm noticing across Canadian Tech hiring right now - companies are being cautious — understandably. Budgets are tighter, every hire has to count. So they default to the "safe" candidate. The one with the exact title, exact industry, exact stack. But here's what's quietly happening: software engineer postings in Canada have dropped 51% since 2020, while specialized AI roles more than doubled. The skills that matter most right now didn't exist as job titles 3 years ago. If you're screening purely for what someone's done before, you're probably screening out the people best positioned for where your team needs to go. The most interesting hires I've seen lately come from adjacent backgrounds — people who've been retooling, learning, and adapting rather than waiting for the market to come back to them. Hiring for Ruby on Rails in Canada is a unique challenge. In a recent client conversation, I dug into why this specific skillset remains both pricey and scarce. On the East Coast, the bottleneck is straightforward. Most local universities don’t include Ruby in their core curriculum, focusing instead on JavaScript, Python, and some Java/C++. Beyond Introhive and a few smaller shops, there hasn't been a density of local R&D firms using the framework. Without that local training ground, the talent pool remains narrow, driving up the cost for specialized expertise. Looking nationally, the trend intensifies. Canada is home to some of the largest Rails-based companies in the world, including Shopify, Clio, and Jobber. These organizations have scaled successfully on the framework, but they also set a high market floor for compensation. When smaller firms recruit for Rails, they are directly competing with the mature engineering cultures and high-end salary brackets of industry leaders (to a degree far more extreme than in Go, .NET, etc.). The takeaway? Ruby on Rails offers advantages in speed and efficiency for R&D, but can create distinct challenges in HR and talent.

Public-sector hiring in Canada doesn’t interpret people. It processes applications. There’s no reading between the lines. No credit for “implied” experience. No benefit for sounding senior, confident, or promising. If a qualification isn’t explicitly written, it effectively doesn’t exist. That’s not cold. That’s how fairness is enforced at scale. This is where many strong job seekers quietly lose ground. They’re qualified. They’re capable. But they rely on inference, the same way the private sector often does. Public-sector hiring is different. It evaluates what can be verified, not what can be assumed. Potential still matters — but only when it’s demonstrated in the format the system recognizes. Once you understand that distinction, government jobs stop looking "mysterious" or inaccessible. They start looking procedural. And procedures can be learned. “I’m ready to start tomorrow, once I’m cleared to work.” I heard that again this week. Skilled engineer. Strong cloud experience. Living in Canada already. Their only roadblock? Their work authorization. Here’s the reality I had to share: For most of the companies I recruit with, sponsorship adds extra paperwork, time, and cost. So they tend to shortlist folks who can step in today. Not great news, but it’s the truth. Why say it out loud? • Credibility = telling people the reality, not what they hope to hear. • Honest answers today make room for better matches down the line. • When a role does allow sponsorship, I know exactly who to call. For many years, we told people that if they wanted a future-proof, high-paying job that they simply needed to "learn to code". Canada's largest coding bootcamp, Lighthouse Labs, graduated over 40,000 students over a 12-year period. In August, they filed for bankruptcy and terminated every employee overnight. Students mid-program lost access to their courses immediately. This wasn't an isolated incident. 2U wrote off $750M and exited bootcamps entirely. Codeup, Kenzie Academy, Rithm School, Code Fellows. Momentum Learning cited AI directly when closing. We know AI is cannibalizing the industry. 70% of hiring managers believe AI can replace intern-level work. 71 emails. Multiple threads. $2k+ in agent fees. One visa. That's what my friend went through for a student visa with a migration agent. The stack I'm holding is the printout of his correspondence. Documents drip-fed one at a time. Questions answered only when he thought to ask them. Weeks of back and forth. The alternative? DIY it. Spend hours on government websites and Reddit threads. Or read straight up legislation if you are brave (Section 48 bars and Schedule 3 requirements are a nice read). And hope you didn't make a mistake you'll only find out about months later when a decision comes back. I'm an immigrant myself. I've been through this. That's why I built Tern Visa. If it takes a law to stop ghosting candidates… What does that say about our hiring standards? In Ontario, starting January 2026, companies will be legally required to notify interviewed candidates of their hiring status within 45 days. Let that sink in. Yes — it took government intervention to get companies to do what should have been basic human decency. But this isn’t just Ontario’s problem. It’s ours too. In the MENA region — especially across the UAE and KSA — hiring velocity is growing fast. Tech is scaling. Startups are maturing. VC capital is flowing. But the candidate experience? Still broken. Talented professionals show up for interviews. They prep. They rearrange schedules. They deliver. And then… silence. No follow-up. No outcome. Just limbo. And here’s the brutal truth: -Ghosting doesn’t just reflect poorly on your brand. -It doesn’t just kill future referrals. -It erodes trust in the entire tech ecosystem. As recruiters, we should guide every founder, VP, and hiring team we partner with on two non-negotiables: Communicate early. Fully. Again. Trust is your only sustainable competitive edge. Pay transparency and basic follow-up with candidates shouldn’t need to be legislated. The fact this is even necessary says a lot about how broken hiring norms have become. None of this is radical. It’s just treating people like adults.
