US Open: Novak Djokovic

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started two weeks ago and due to the heavy rains from last week the Men's Single Final - normally held on Sunday was moved to today. I've been posting a handsome photo of a male tennis player each day of play (with the exception of yesterday - 9/11) and it seemed fitting to conclude these posts with the world's no. 1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic.

Novak has had an amazing year winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and rallied against Federer this weekend in the semifinals of this tournament to come from behind and win. If he wins today in NY he will have won 3 of the 4 Majors in the 2011 - an amazing feat and in large part the reason he has the no. 1 ranking.

I love watching Djokovic play not only because he is so gifted, but he brings a lot of personality to the game of tennis. He's clearly a ham. In the past he's been known to mimic other tennis players (all in good fun of course) and this year at the Open he's been known to dance after his wins which only gets the already loud crowd in NY cheering even more.

If you'd like to find out more about this Serbian who's game has been flawless all year you can link here. If you'd like to find out more about this year's US Open you can visit the tournament's official website, www.usopen.org.

US Open: Raphael Nadal

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started last week, and the tournament is now nearly over. To celebrate the Open I've been posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring Spanish tennis player, Raphael Nadal, currently ranked no. 2 in the world. Nadal has been in the spotlight ever since the summer of 2005 when he won the French Open. Since then, he's been a regular at not just Roland Garros but at all four majors. He has an amazing game and was the guy who grabbed the no. 1 ranking from Roger Federer who had been ranked no. 1 an astounding 237 weeks.

Nadal enters the US Open Semifinals playing no. 4 Andy Murray. If he wins, he'll play either Roger Federer or the worlds current no. 1 Novak Djokovic.

US Open: David Nalbandian

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started last week, and despite the rain, the tournament continues (albeit in fits and starts). To celebrate the Open I've been posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring Argentinian tennis player, David Nalbandian, a player who just a few years ago was ranked as high as 3 in the world, but in recent years has seen his ranking drop and is currently 76 in the world.

This year David made it to the third round of the US Open where he lost to Raphael Nadal - last year's US Open Champion
. Nalbandian is now 29 and doesn't have the same game he did a few years ago, but he's still an excellent competitor who has a career to be proud of for certain. If you'd like to find out more about this handsome tennis player from Cordoba, Argentina link here. US Open: David Ferrer

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started last week, and I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring Spanish tennis player, David Ferrer, who is currently playing yesterday's "Tennis Tease", Andy Roddick. David is currently ranked 5 in the world and has a game to back up that ranking.

Although Ferrer is definitely more at home on clay courts (lets be frank all the Spaniards are), David's game is so strong you cannot count him out. However, whoever wins today's match will have a short lived victory as I fully expect Raphael Nadal to pull through and meet that player in the quarter finals.

US Open: Andy Roddick

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started last week, and I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring American tennis player, Andy Roddick, who will be playing David Ferrer later today. Roddick is a former Top 10 player and won the US Open back in 2003. However, he's 29 now and his game has slipped in recent years. Despite that fact, I can't help but pull for Andy and hope he can beat Ferrer (the second highest ranked Spaniard). You can cheer on Andy tonight 7PM ET on ESPN2.

US Open: Grigor Dimitrov

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started this week, and I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring a Bulgarian player named Grigor Dimitrov. Currently ranked 57, Grigor lost in the first round to the extremely physical Frenchman, Gael Monfils. However, he's still quite young at only 20 years of age and he has time to improve his game. Time will tell if he can, but in the interim, I enjoy watching this young man play.

What do you think about Grigor? If you'd like to find out more about him, you can link here. If you'd like to find out more about this year's US Open you can visit the tournament's official website, www.usopen.org.

US Open: Arnaud Clement

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started on Monday in New York City, and I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring French player Arnaud Clement, a former top 10 player. Arnaud is one of the older players on the tour now that he's in his early 30s and in recent years he's had more success playing doubles although he and Lukas Dlouhy unfortunately lost in the Open's first round this year.

Standing at just 5'8", most players tower over this Frenchman. Despite his lack of stature, I think Arnaud looks like a handsome rogue and I love listening to him shouting in French... Even I can read lips that say "merde". Considering how many people who read this blog like facial hair, I know Arnaud will be a popular choice.

If you'd like to find out more about this Frenchman you can link here. If you'd like to find out more about this year's US Open you can visit the tournament's official website, www.usopen.org.

US Open: James Blake

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started earlier this week in New York City, and I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring American tennis player and native New Yorker, James Blake. Unfortunately he lost to David Ferrer in 3-sets on Friday. However, he's still quick and has a killer forehand, making him really fun to watch when his game is on.

I've long thought James Blake is one of the most handsome active players and I love this playful promotional photo for evian water. If you'd like to find out more about Blake you can link here. US Open: Juan Martin Del Potro

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started on Monday in New York City, and in honor of the Open, I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring the super tall Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro (nicknamed Delpo) who stands 6'6". Currently ranked 18 in the world, he beat fellow countryman Diego Junqueira today to move on to the third round. I don't expect Delpo to win the Open but he is a tough competitor.
I love this photo of him tossing his shirt into the crowd. Not sure I'd fit into something that can fit his frame, but wouldn't it be cool to have?

US Open: Feliciano Lopez

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started this week in New York City. In honor of the Open, I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play.

Today, I'm featuring the first of what will be several Spanish tennis players. Feliciano Lopez (ranked 25 in the world) has made it into the second round of the US Open. Even if you don't know much about Lopez game, I can guarantee you he's worth watching. He's quick and like most of the Spanish players - very passionate about his game. Just like Ginepri (who I featured yesterday), I think Lopez might have a larger following if he was allowed to play his matches without a shirt.

If you'd like to find out more about Feliciano Lopez you can link here. For more information about this year's US Open you can visit the tournament's official website, www.usopen.org.

US Open: Robby Ginepri

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started on Monday in New York City. In honor of the Open, I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day there is play at the US Open.

Today, I'm featuring my first American tennis player, Robby Ginepri. He has moved on to the second round at the US Open but is a long shot. However, I've always thought this guy not only has a great game, but is easy on the eyes. I think most will agree that tennis might have a larger following if guys like Ginepri were allowed to play matches without a shirt (who needs those pesky sponsors anyway).

2011 US Open: Dmitry Tursunov

Image Image
ImageThe US Open started on Monday in New York City. In honor of the Open, I'm posting a handsome male tennis player each day the Open is being played.

Today, I'm featuring Dmitry Tursunov from Russia who is currently ranked 43 in the world. Sadly this handsome Russian is not participating in the US Open this year.

If you'd like to find out more about Dmitry Tursunov you can link here. For more information about this year's US Open you can visit the tournament's official website, www.USOpen.org.

Red Sox and Yankees play this week

Image Image
ImageThe Boston Red Sox start a 3-game series with the New York Yankees tonight. This is the last time the two teams will face each other in Boston during the regular season. Last week I wrote a post, Boston Sports Bars, and I'm pretty sure that all of these locations will be busy through out the 3-game series. Will you be watching these games? If so, where?

2011 US Open: Roger Federer

Image Image
ImageThe US Open (the last of the four tennis majors) starts today in New York City; concluding on Sunday, September 11th.

I've attended this tennis tournament in the past and it is an amazing place to see some of the world's best tennis players compete. I especially love the raucous night games. In honor of the start of play, I thought I'd post a tennis player each day.

If you'd like to find out more about Roger Federer you can link here. For more information about this year's US Open you can visit the tournament's official website, www.USOpen.org.

Boston Sports Bars

Image Image
ImageSome of Boston's best sports bars are located just outside Fenway Park and over by the Boston Garden. For many people who cannot get tickets to a game, heading to one of the bars there is the next best thing. However, Boston is a great sports town with a long and proud history of supporting their local professional and college sporting teams. As a result there is no need to head down to Fenway Park or the Boston Garden. Nearly every neighborhood has a handful of excellent sports bars to check out. Here are some of my favorite places.

BackBay: Champions is located just outside of Copley Square in the Marriott Copley and it includes a 12' x 24' plasma screen that is pretty awesome. If you haven't visited this place since their renovation - come back. It's in a great location and affords great views from anywhere you sit as well as a huge bar. You can follow them on twitter at ChampionsBoston.

Fenway / Kenmore: Cask'n Flagon may be the most famous of all Boston's sports bars. It's location just outside Fenway Park is second to none and since its renovations a few years ago, it is far easier and more comfortable to watch a game. You can follow them on twitter at thecasknflagon.

North End / West End: The Fours is nestled between the North End and West End across from the Boston Garden. Despite having multiple locations outside the city, the best remains the original if only because its a stone throw from the Garden.

Seaport / Fort Point Channel: Jerry Remy's at Liberty Wharf this place is relatively new and is already a favorite. Situated between the Fish Pier and Harbor Lights, this bar also sports an excellent view of Boston harbor. I far prefer this location to the original just outside Fenway Park. You can also follow them on Twitter here, JerryRemysGrill.

South End: Fritz is first and foremost a neighborhood bar that also happens to be a sports bar. With trophies showing their support for neighborhood sporting leagues and TVs everywhere you can always watch whatever game is of interest to you. Located in the South End, patrons are nearly all gay.

Southie: Stadium Sports Bar is just a few blocks from Andrew T stop along the Dorchester border. It has a second location down in Foxwoods which may be why many people think it sounds familiar. The Boston location has multiple oversized screens and plasma TVs everywhere you look. You can follow this location on twitter at StadiumSBoston.

Just in case someone thinks I forgot about Beacon Hill or Charlestown, I couldn't think of a single place to watch a game. It has been awhile since I've spent much time there. Any suggestions?

What are some of your favorite places in Boston or where you live to watch games? Have any others to suggest or are you thinking, "Hey BosGuy... I never watch these games. I'm far more preoccupied with my drink order."

Red Bull Cliff Diving comes to Boston

Image Image
Perhaps Red Bull really does give you wings...

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series came to Boston on Saturday, August 20th. The tour had made stops in Chile, Mexico, Greece, France and Italy before coming to Boston. The final stop on the Red Bull tour is in Yalta, Ukraine next month, but today Boston was all about diving.

One thing I absolutely love about Boston is that this town embraces sports of all kinds and this extreme sport which had some of the world's best cliff divers jumping from over 90 feet (nearly 30 meters) attracted a HUGE crowd today in the Seaport District. To add to the drama, divers used the cantilever roof of the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) building on Fan Pier.

Free stuff to do in Boston this Friday

Image Image
ImageAlthough I'm off to Gotham this weekend, that doesn't mean I'm unaware of all the fun things happening in Boston. If you don't have plans this Friday or if you are tired of doing the same thing, consider one of these options.

Shakespeare on the Common Once again this year, The Commonwealth Shakespeare Co. is providing free performances. This year they are performing All's Well that Ends Well through August 14th down by the bandstand on the Boston Common. Invite that special someone to join you Friday evening under the stars and enjoy some great local theater.

ICA Boston Thanks to the Highland Street Foundation, this Friday (August 5th) Boston's premiere contemporary art museum is free to the public as part of their FREE FUN FRIDAYS series. Be sure to check out their "The Record: Contemporary Art & Vinyl" exhibit. For a small cover charge after taking in the exhibit you can partake in their waterfont dance party "DJs on the harbor: Classic DJ Throwdown".

Of course there are more options such as First Fridays Open Studios, Boston Guerilla Queer Bar which will be overtaking a straight bar in the theater district this month, or joining guys for a drink at Fritz Bar in the South End to watch the Red Sox kick off a hometown series against the Yankees.

Boston Bruins victory parade

Image Image

Earlier this week the State House unfurled a large congratulations banner and since then, it seems like black-and-gold is everywhere you look. Today's victory parade for the Bruins brought record crowds into the city to celebrate, and the beautiful weather only made the parade that much more enjoyable for everyone.

Attending the parade over near Copley Square, it was hard not to get caught up in the emotion of the day watching tens of thousands of people cheering on each player as they went by in the Duck Boat parade.

However, one of my favorite memories of the day may have been after the parade when the players were back at the Garden. A local TV channel filmed Patrice Bergeron walking home to the North End followed by about 100 fans cheering him the entire way. Patrice is one of several players who lives in the North End and their approachability / no airs personalities are so refreshing to see in professional athletes.

Congratulations to the Boston Bruins and their fans.

Decade of Dominance: Golden Age for Boston Sporting Teams

Image Image
Image7 Championship Titles in 10 Years
I'm sure there are a lot of people who have strong opinions about Boston sports teams. I'll be the first to admit that this town takes sports very seriously (probably too seriously at times). However, ignoring the drunks and annoying braggarts, there is a large contingency of fans (myself included) who follow and really love the local teams, cheering them on with bravado.

The Bruins win last night, means that each of the major Boston sports franchises has brought a championship title to Boston in the past decade. I'm not sure if there is another city that's been so fortunate. A quick look on Wikipedia shows a pretty amazing streak for Boston sports teams.

2002 - New England Patriots win Superbowl (Football)
2004 - New England Patriots win Superbowl (Football)
Red Sox win World Series (Baseball) first time since 1918
2005 - New England Patriots win Superbowl (Football)
2007 - Red Sox win World Series (Baseball)
2008 - Celtics win 17th NBA Title (Basketball)
2011 - Bruins win Stanley Cup Trophy (Hockey) first time since 1972

This doesn't even count appearances these teams made in post season play. Some years it seemed like Boston had multiple teams playing in the finals, which only has added to the near religious fever residents have for the local sporting teams.

Congratulations Boston Bruins

Image Image
ImageTonight the Boston Bruins won game 7 on the road, beating the Vancouver Canucks. The series was well played by both teams and filled with plenty of drama. The last time the Boston Bruins won the National Hockey League Stanley Cup Championship was the 1971-1972 season. As you might imagine the city has erupted into spontaneous celebration. Congratulations Boston.

The homepage of Boston.com has a tribute to the Bruins, this is my favorite picture. Tim Thomas the goalie skating with the Stanley Cup overhead. Image
