Theme Day: Entertainment

Image

Image

The Western Spirit Museum of Scottsdale hosted a big opening recently after an addition was added to the museum.  I caught these shots of some of the entertainment taking place in front of the museum.

First we have a singing cowboy and the fellow to the left was showing some rope tricks.

Theme Day: White

Image

The City Daily Photo Bloggers theme for March 1st is "White".  That's probably a subject that comes easy for all the northern and eastern bloggers who have been buried in snow.  For me, I had to do a bit of digging to find something appropriate.  I found this photo of a giant white rabbit that was part of the Desert Botanical Garden exhibit back in 2019 called "Wild Rising".  I posted the white elephant from that exhibit here.

Theme Day: Double

Image

On Friday it suddenly dawned on me that I needed a theme photo for today's post and I didn't even know what the theme was.  So I had to do some quick work to find the theme and then I scrolled through the photo files to find an appropriate photo.  This one popped out sooner than I expected.  Two almost identical horses at work pulling a wagon.  This will work for the February 1st theme of "Double"!

Theme Day: Photo of the Year

Image

My photo of the year was a tough choice this year. As I scanned my 2025 posts, I found so many photos that I loved.  I narrowed it down to two photos.

This one is a portrait of Alexis, one of the three dogs that belong to my friends David and Riley. I posted it in July.  It was sheer luck that Alexis posed so perfectly and long enough for me to grab this shot.

Image

This second one I took at the Phoenix Art Museum.  I posted it last May. I had just recently taken that class on iPhone photography and I was practicing the use of the "portrait" mode. There was a colorful painting on the wall a few feet behind this Buddha statue and the portrait mode blurred that painting into a perfect backdrop.

There are still a few of us City Daily Photo bloggers out there.  If you would like to check out their Photos of the Year, click here.

Happy New Year to All!!

Theme Day: Furry Things

Image

When I saw this theme coming up I thought that I might just pull a photo out of the archives.  After all, I have plenty of dogs, cats and even quite a lot of zoo animals in the archives. Then on Saturday I stopped at a small store that is adjacent to a local grocery store and I saw these colorful and very furry critters for sale.

Image

The colors were so bright and cheerful, I couldn't resist a few photos.

Image

All that brilliant color and all those happy faces, it was a more than I could resist.

Theme Day: Breakfast

Image

I hardly ever eat a big breakfast but sometimes when I'm on vacation, a nice breakfast is just the ticket.  Last year when I was in Laguna Beach for a few days, I had breakfast at the oceanside restaurant at Crystal Cove State Park.  The place is called The Beachcomber and since it sits mere feet from the lapping waves, it's a perfect name.  On this particular day, I ordered the Ranch Skillet which is eggs scrambled with bacon, sausage, peppers and onions.  I had no idea it would be this big!  I hated to let any of this delicious dish go to waste, but I simply couldn't eat it all.  I could easily have split this with my friend Glenda and possibly the people at the next table too.

Image

However, Glenda was already deep into the house-made beignets.  Don't those look delicious?

Theme Day: Glass

Image
We have turned another page on the calendar and are starting a new month.  City Daily Photo Bloggers post a photo based on a theme on the first of every month and the theme for October 1st is "Glass".

I decided to use a photo I took in London back in August when I was there.  I visited the Southwark Cathedral and spent some time admiring the history of the place as well as the beautiful stained glass windows all around the church.  This particular window caught my eye because of its abstract nature.

I did some research and learned that this window was commissioned to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth in 2012.  The artist creating this beautiful window is Leifur Breidfjord from Reykjavik Iceland.  It was designed to reflect the progress of Her Majesty's reign as "Defender of the Faith" for 60 years.

The motto at the base reads: "Vivat Regina, Defender of the Faith Diamond Jubilee 1952-2012"

Vivat Regina means long live the queen and indeed she did!

Theme Day: Vanishing Point

Image

I love taking photos with a "vanishing point" and I have many in my archives.  Finding one I hadn't posted before was the challenge for me.  It looks like this one might fit the bill.  I took this a few years ago on drive out to Fountain Hills, the town just east of Scottsdale.  I remember seeing this long stretch of desert road and no one else on it so I stopped, went out to the center of the road and snapped the shot low to the ground.  The road just vanishes out there somewhere.

Theme Day: Sweets

Image

When there is a buffet of tempting treats in front of you, it is hard to decide what to choose.  Best take a plateful back to the table.

Today's first of the month bloggers theme is "Sweets", a subject I'm quite fond of.  This photo was taken at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel when a friend and I were enjoying a Sunday brunch.  It was a delicious end to a fun Sunday outing.

The City Daily Photo Bloggers theme for August is Sweets.  If you would like to see some other sweet treats from around the world, click here.

Theme Day: Bubbles

Image

The July 1st theme for City Daily Photo Bloggers is "Bubbles".  This one was easy for me.  I love champagne and usually have some once a week.  This was last week's treat.

Theme Day: Shadows

Image

The City Daily Photo Bloggers theme for June 1st is Shadows and it gave me a perfect opportunity to show a few more photos from the recent "Light Bloom" exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden.

Image

The patterned shadows cast by these giant sculptures was amazing.

I thought this show was pretty spectacular.

Theme Day: Very Small

Image

The City Daily Photo bloggers theme for May 1st is "very small" and this photo came to mind when I started to think about what to post.  The photograph dates back to November of 2012 when I saw this "very small" butterfly perched on the top of one of the nopales of a prickly pear cactus.  I had never seen such a tiny little butterfly and I've never seen one since.  Its name is Hemiargus Ceraunus or a Ceraunus Blue.  The species does live in desert areas but it appears from what I've read that they are more prominent from Texas to Florida. It's such a pretty little thing.  I'd love to find another like it.

Theme Day: Stripes

Image

When I was at the Heard Museum a week ago, I saw this Native American textile on display in the gift shop and I thought it would be perfect for today's theme of "Stripes".

City Daily Photo Bloggers post a photo on the first of every month based on an assigned theme.  April's theme is "Stripes".  You can see other blogger's posts by clicking here.  You can see my past theme day posts by clicking the "Theme Day" label below.

Theme Day: Fire

Image

I took this photo back in January on a visit to the Hermosa Inn.  Lon's, the restaurant at the resort has several of these corner fireplaces scattered both inside and outside.  It looks very cozy and warm which back in January was perfect.  Today, no fire is needed.  We've had temperatures hovering close to 90 degrees this last week.  Our temperatures are running about 15 degrees over normal for this time of year.

Theme Day: Motors

Image

The February 1st theme for City Daily Photo Bloggers is "Motors" and I must admit this one had me totally stumped.  Motors are actually everywhere you look.  They are on lawn mowers, motorcycles and of course cars.  They also run appliances like food processors and blenders.  None of that inspired me.  Finally, one day a week or two ago I was shopping Kierland Commons and I passed the Tesla showroom and saw this motor in the window.  So I went inside and took a photo of this display of the motor that runs that electric car and decided that would be my February 1st photo.

Theme Day: Photo of the Year

Image

On the first day of the new year, City Daily Photo Bloggers always post their favorite photo from the previous year.  I chose this one that I took back in October at the Desert Botanical Garden.

This is one of the "Light Bloom" sculptures that is part of recent exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden.  I posted more of these beauties back in October.

I'm waiting for the holiday crowds to thin out a bit before I go back to the garden at night to get some more "light bloom" shots.  They make such beautiful designs.

Theme Day: Slow

Image

Our little group of City Daily Photo Bloggers chose "Slow" for the theme for December 1st.  I wondered how I would represent slow in a photo and then I remembered this turtle I encountered a few years ago.  Turtles are truly slow moving creatures so I'd say he's perfect for the theme.

Theme Day: Cooking

Image
I had a plan for a photo for this day.  I cooked dinner for some friends two weeks ago and my plan was to have one of them take a photo of me at the stove.  However as things sometimes go, I got so busy cooking and talking that I totally forgot.  So all you get to see is what I made.  It's shrimp and fennel with spinach fettuccine. It's a recipe I've had for many years and it's still a winner today.

Theme Day: Blue

Image

I dug very deep into my archives to retrieve this photo.  This was taken in 2008, the very first time that Dale Chihuly did an exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden.  This was one of my favorite pieces from that exhibit.  I love the color.  These glass figures look like graceful water birds stretching their heads toward the sky.

The City Daily Photo Bloggers theme for the first of October is "Blue".  Check out other Blue shots here.

Theme Day: Bridges

Image

The City Daily Photo Bloggers theme for the first of September is "Bridges".  I took this photo several months ago when I was returning from that short trip to Oklahoma City.  If the airplane lands in Phoenix from the east, it gently glides over the city of Tempe and the Tempe Town Lake.  As you can see, there are three bridges that cross the lake at this point. The one all the way to the right is a railroad bridge and the other two carry traffic in and out of downtown Tempe.  If the landing is on a clear day, I can get very good photos over Tempe as we make our landing approach.  You can see another one here.
