FAQ
Welcome to CatBehaviorHelp.com: A resource dedicated to understanding and improving feline behavior through evidence-based, compassionate methods.
As a certified cat behavior consultant, I provide professional guidance for cat guardians seeking solutions to challenges such as litter box problems, cat aggression, fear and anxiety, and multi-cat conflict. If your cat is shy, reactive, or simply struggling to adjust, my goal is to help you build a calm, cooperative, and enriched home environment.
This FAQ addresses the most common questions about cat behavior consultations, positive reinforcement training, and the process of supporting emotional wellness in cats.
Frequently Asked Questions
As a certified cat behavior consultant, I address a wide range of feline behavior concerns, including cat-on-cat aggression, litter box problems, cat-on-human aggression, fearful behavior, late night or early morning wake-up, excessive vocalization, hyperactivity, overgrooming, food obsession, kitten socialization and much more. Each case is evaluated individually to identify the emotional and environmental factors contributing to the issue.
Every cat behavior consultation begins with a comprehensive review of your cat’s history, environment, and current behavior. Using this information, I develop a customized behavior modification plan that may include positive reinforcement training, environmental enrichment, and structured behavior change exercises designed to support your cat’s long-term well-being. Consultations are done in a “safe space” where I practice a compassionate approach that focuses on the evolutionary and adaptive forces that drive cat behavior.
Yes. I frequently assist clients whose cats display fear-based or defensive aggression, such as hissing, swatting, or biting. Because of my ongoing work with the Animal Care Centers of NYC, I see a lot of cat-on-human aggression so I consider this a specialty of mine. My approach focuses on methods of stress reduction, trigger identification, and humane desensitization to rebuild trust and promote emotional stability. Safety for both people and cats is always my highest priority.
All of my recommendations are founded on evidence-based feline behavior science and the use of reward-based, positive reinforcement techniques. I never employ punishment or aversive tools, as these methods can increase fear and anxiety. My goal is to help your cat learn through gentle guidance, consistency, and trust and structure.
Yes. Many stray and semi-feral cats can successfully adapt to indoor life with structured support. I guide caregivers in creating low-stress environments, establishing safe spaces, and using gradual socialization techniques that help build confidence and trust over time.
Yes. I offer virtual cat behavior consultations via secure video conference for clients throughout the United States and beyond. I think they're as effective, and sometimes more so than an in-person visit. Between seeing videos, having you fill out my behavior questionnaire(s), and seeing a sketch of your home's floor plan I will get a really good picture of what's going on. And I don't impact your cat's behavior by being physically present. Lastly, I don't train your cat; I train you to train your cat, and that works perfectly over virtual sessions.
Yes it’s an option in some cases. Sometimes a situation is sufficiently unique that an in-person visit will be helpful and will allow me to see things I wouldn’t see virtually. In other cases, the client really wants that in-person connection. With certain limitations I do in-person consults on a case by case basis. Please contact me to inquire.
It is always a good idea to see your vet to rule out potential medical causes of the behavior. If the behavior is the result of a medical condition then we will not be treating it effectively. Behaviors relating to the litterbox, food intake, overgrooming or any sudden changes around your cat’s behavior should be of particular concern with respect to medical conditions, but this short list should not be considered all inclusive.
Improvement timelines vary depending on the behavior’s severity, the cat’s temperament, and the consistency of follow-through in the home. Many clients observe positive changes within several weeks of implementing the plan, occasionally more quickly depending on the behavior and the cause, and more complex or long-standing behaviors may require several months of structured behavior modification and follow-up support.
Cat training focuses on teaching specific cues or desired actions, such as coming when called or using a scratching post. Behavior modification addresses the emotional motivation behind unwanted behaviors—helping a cat feel safe and relaxed in challenging situations. Most behavior plans combine both approaches to achieve sustainable results.
Yes. I specialize in resolving multi-cat aggression and social tension. My plans help guardians assess compatibility, manage space and resources, and encourage healthy social behavior such as play, grooming, and peaceful cohabitation through careful environmental design and structured introductions.
Prior to your appointment, you’ll receive an intake questionnaire requesting details about your cat’s routine, history, and household setup. Providing videos, photos, or detailed notes on specific behaviors will help me create the most accurate and effective plan possible, and I may ask for a simple sketch of your home’s floor plan.
Because feline behavior is influenced by numerous factors—medical, environmental, and emotional—specific outcomes cannot be guaranteed. However, I guarantee that each client receives individualized, science-based, and compassionate guidance tailored to their cat’s needs and supported by proven feline behavior modification methods.

Stephen Quandt Feline Behavior Associates, LLC 70 Google reviewsPosted on Google Jamie MercadoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Stephen Quandt was recommended by my veterinarian. I have two seniors who came with litter box and anxiety issues. Multiple veterinarians had tried various anti anxiety meds and nothing helped. My current vet remembered Stephen helping another client. Stephen is knowledgeable and patient. He works to get to the heart of the concerns and help the human understand a cat’s thought process. Based on our discussions, he was the only person who recommended both cats be put on Effexor. My vet agreed to try this course of treatment and prescribed the medication. The cats have been on Effexor for over two months now, and we have not had an accident since they started. They actually seem calmer overall. If you are dealing with feline behavioral concerns, there is help! Stephen’s guidance and education were well worth the time. He approaches issues differently than a veterinarian which is exactly what we needed. His plan in conjunction with our veterinarian’s support has significantly improved the lives of everyone in my home… two legged and four legged, alike.Posted on Google Tracy GrammerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Compassionate. Experienced. Accessible. Practical. Offers clear, proven strategies for addressing key behavior issues and educates his clients as to why cats do what they do. Once you consult with Stephen, you've got a cat behaviorist in your pocket for life. He's supremely kind, helpful, and in love with all things cat. That's the guy you want helping you help your furry friend. On behalf of Pickles, Mr. Brown, and Pepper Jack, I owe him a huge debt of gratitude.Posted on Google Miller KressTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Stephen is the best. When I first adopted my senior kitty, I thought I was going to have to rehome her due to her aggressive behaviors towards my other cat. With Stephen's help, I was able to slowly integrate them into each other's lives and now they coexist beautifully. Stephen is obviously extremely knowledgeable, but also incredibly understanding and really meets you where you're at. I can't recommend him enough and am so grateful that the shelter I adopted from put me in contact with him.Posted on Google Benjamin AradTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Stephan is amazingly knowledgeable, detail oriented, and a pleasure to work with.Posted on Google Jon GTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We came to Stephen for what we thought was a case of aggression between our cats. After our consultation and reviewing footage, Stephen accurately diagnosed the problem differently - as an overactive cat that was not getting enough enriching play. After reading Stephen's report and plan for our cats, and implementing the advice within to provide our cats with more structured play and reward experiences, among other things, we have already seen a significant change. Our cats are no longer getting into spats/fights, and they both seem more fulfilled and calm. After scheduled play time & getting a reward (rather than random ones) they are napping more. They are sleeping close to each other, and seem more comfortable. We can't thank Stephen enough for his help, and are really glad that we decided to reach out to him. We wholeheartedly recommend Stephen's services!Posted on Google Irina MorozovaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Stephen helped so much! We had an issue with one of the cats urinating outside the box - but close to the box - and Stephen suggested multiple simple solutions to improve the situation. We tried the solutions right away. Fast forward three weeks - no peeing happens outside of the box and our carpets are safe again. Stephen also gave us some guidance on cats interacting with each other. It was a huge help and a huge relief! I am definitely recommending Stephen to my friends with cats.Posted on Google Krishani TeeluckTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I adopted a cat, Nemo, who was scheduled to be euthanized due to her behavior. She was aggressive, loud, and wouldn’t let anyone near her. My heart took to her as soon as I met her, and I applied to adopt her. Once I brought her home, Nemo would “scream” if she even heard me within 20 feet of her and would attack if I got within a few feet of her. At the end of Nemo’s first week here, she barricaded me in my apartment by not allowing me to cross from one end to the other. I isolated myself in a room with absolutely no idea what to do. On a whim, I searched for cat behaviorists and came across Stephen. I emailed him and he very quickly made time to call me due to the severity of the situation. I began working virtually with Stephen and saw measurable changes over the next few weeks. From his guidance, I kept Nemo in a room by herself with everything she needed. Week 1: Nemo stopped hissing at me every single time I walked by. Week 2: Nemo began exploring her room and toys, and eating the treats I left for her. She also started occasionally greeting me with friendly meows. Week 3: She let me hand-feed her a treat (while purring!). A day later, she let me pet her, and absolutely could not get enough of the attention. After week 3, Stephen worked with me to introduce Nemo to the rest of the apartment. By week 4, my girl was out and about like she owned the place. Nemo is currently one of the sweetest, gentlest, most playful cats I’ve ever known. She sleeps next to me in bed, cuddles up on the couch next to me, and is almost always head-butting me for pets and attention. I truly can’t believe not only what a huge difference in behavior she’s displaying, but also how quickly she turned around. I cannot express how grateful I am for Stephen’s expertise, guidance, and encouragement. He helped me give a cat a second chance, quite literally saving her life, and it’s evident how much his heart is in his work. I fully recommend Stephen to anyone facing issues with their kitty!Posted on Google JamieTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We contacted Stephen for guidance on adopting a companion for our cat Sidney, who had lost his buddy several months ago. Stephen's knowledge, insights, compassion and encouragement have been invaluable with this experience, which we could not have gone through without him. He advised us on what type of cat to look for, gave detailed instructions on cat-to-cat introduction and was always available for questions and guidance, especially when we had concerns. This has been a very rewarding and positive experience and we highly recommend Stephen. We adopted Jasper and the posted pictures of Sidney and Jasper say it all!Posted on Google Karen GlassTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Stephen was recommended to our rescue as we needed help in working with Patrick, who had been used as a bait cat. From the first conversation with Stephen, it was apparent that he not only brings extensive knowledge to each case, but immense compassion for the feline and humans involved. I felt that I had found a true partner to work with to help Patrick and it was obvious that Stephen cared about Patrick's outcome just as much as I did. So grateful for being put into contact with Stephen as he will be a behavioral resource for our rescue going forward.Posted on Google NicoleTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Stephen is extremely knowledgeable and understanding. He was able to help us get our cats together after our resident cat was showing no signs of accepting our new cat and being actively aggressive after 4 months. We had one longer session and two follow ups over two months and both cats are finally able to be in the same room together (which is a big deal as we only have a 1 bedroom apartment). Stephen was amazing and great to work with, I highly recommend him!
