Opening and closing is the one operation every embedded deployment performs and no benchmark measures, and this engine has produced three defects in it (ArcadeData#5747, ArcadeData#6489 which was ours, ArcadeData#5872). A number that can slide from 8ms to 30s between releases with nobody watching is what a regression gate is for, so DECISIONS ArcadeData#50 makes it an invariant rather than a column: close should be O(what was written), not O(what is stored), and under ~100ms. Situations ride the WORKLOAD axis so each is its own cell and a slow one cannot hide inside a mean. Eight of them, chosen so the table says something positive as well: documents, indexes, sparse and time series are expected to be flat, and showing that is what makes the two that are not into a finding rather than an accusation. Three modes, because v1 of this matrix measured open-then-close WITHOUT EVER QUERYING and inflated the vector rows up to 617x. That is not a neutral protocol, it is one specific case, so clean/read/write are reported separately. The write mode inserts one document into a Scratch type present in every situation. Writing into the situation's own structure would put an index update in the vector row's dirty close and not in the doc row's, pricing two different things under one name. The database lives on a bind-mounted host path because a cold open is produced by evicting it, and fadvise cannot evict an overlay upper layer (both hosts run overlayfs) nor tmpfs (/tmp on both). The driver asserts the filesystem type and refuses rather than reporting a cold column it cannot honestly produce; the host path is deliberately not forwarded into the container, so one variable cannot name both sides.

Prompted by a fair question about the remaining open time after upstream PR ArcadeData#6588, and the answer exposed a hole in this gate rather than in the PR. Persisting the analytical view's CSR moved its cost from close to open: at a million vertices close went 4032 -> 5.95 ms while open went 4.94 -> 241.84. A close-only gate goes GREEN on that. It would equally go green on a change that moved cost the OTHER way and made a session slower overall, which is the exact blind spot DECISIONS ArcadeData#50 exists to prevent and which I built into the gate. What a caller pays is open plus close, so that is what gets budgeted. Verified both directions: a move that leaves the session faster still passes, and a move that puts 240 ms into open fails on both the budget and the shape test.
