UX Enhancement Proposal: Use a Disabled WordPress Icon Instead of a Crossed-Out Logo for Non-WordPress Sites

Description

The browser extension currently displays a WordPress logo with a strike-through overlay when the active site is not running WordPress.

While functional, the strike-through can be interpreted as an error, failure, or blocked state. In reality, the extension is simply indicating that WordPress was not detected on the current site.

Proposed Change

Use a visually disabled or muted WordPress icon for non-WordPress sites instead of applying a strike-through overlay.

For example:

• WordPress detected → current colored icon
• WordPress not detected → grayscale/disabled icon

Benefits

• Better aligns with common browser extension UX patterns.
• Communicates an inactive state rather than an error state.
• Maintains clear distinction between WordPress and non-WordPress sites.
• Provides a more neutral representation of the WordPress brand.

Additional Context

This is purely a UX/visual enhancement. The current functionality works correctly; the proposal is intended to improve clarity and brand perception while keeping the existing behavior unchanged.

Appreciate the suggestion - contemplating how we might come up with a better icon, it's important to understand that there are actually three, not two states:

(1) Not a WordPress site. (Currently the "cross out" you dislike.)
(2) WordPress site, but not logged in. (Currently "grayed out" icon.)
(3) WordPress site, logged in. (The "blue" / lit up version of the icon.)

I could see potentially using your WordPress icon with the green "dot" to signify logged in, however.

Thanks for this proposal — you were right that the strike-through reads as an error/blocked state rather than "not detected," and that's now gone.

We extended it to fit the three states the icon actually has (the two-state grayscale version would've collided "logged out" with "not detected"): color now carries is this WordPress (blue vs. muted slate, no slash), and a green corner dot carries logged in — the indicator direction from the earlier comment. Shipped in #42, which also moves us to the solid WordPress.org mark. Appreciate the nudge on this.
