India_Youth_Patents_KPIT

20 patents per working day, employees inventing something new almost every 30 minutes! This is Bosch. Not just Germany but worldwide! Imagine the enormous amount of thought process put into by the Bosch employees in creating these patents.

Can we do better than this? Yes of course. We are a billion people country with million problems or to be wise, opportunities!

But does having only opportunities enough? No, we need work force to work on it.

That means having large number of people is enough? No! Large number of brilliant, young and energetic people is what we need. And what is more exciting is ~65% of Indians are still to reach in their middle of 30s.

So we have opportunities and we have solvers. Then why we are less on innovations? Actually we are not. It’s just that we do something differently and devalue our innovations. We don’t give it enough thought & file a patent.

Others simply copy our ideas, make them cheap and sell in our country. We can’t stop them simply because we don’t have anything to fight against. Ideally, a patent would stop people copying and help our innovators keep investing in innovations. This will also help our economy grow.

Patent will also give you a right to let your innovation used by selected people with better intentions. It will also reward innovator with exclusive rights.

Now, how does an idea come? Ideas come from change in attitude! As said earlier, we have million opportunities around. Rather than complaining what we need to do is hold on to a problem and try to find a better way to do it.

So what should you do as an individual?

Keep looking & keep thinking!! The more you see and curse, the less you get time to think. An introvert myself, I think this is the biggest quality I have, as it gives me all the free mind to think! If you are not, just try to be sometimes.

Next, whenever you think you have found a unique approach of doing something which is practical and is: non-obvious with industrial application, you should first do a search. The easiest way is to search on internet through many free available websites or with national patent offices / sites. This will ensure you are not reinventing the wheel!

If it’s found to be novel, draft an application in required format (available on internet). It is desirable to have a patent attorney for filling because if you miss a thing, it will give a chance to others to manipulate.

But, few lucky ones have to go through a much simpler process – because they are in KPIT! KPIT heavily focusing on innovation is a good platform for innovators. If you are in KPIT, after prior search on internet if it is found to be novel, check your project confidentiality and talk to the CREST team. They will take it forward while you will be focusing more on the development.

To tell you my own story, I started my journey in KPIT as a fresher which did not stop me from working on innovations. Since college days I liked doing stuff which were not quite interesting to fellow students! This helped me immensely in learning working on innovations. It helped in KPIT as well because Revolo, as you all know is a unique project.

Revolo requires you to think differently for every new sub-project because integration challenges coming up are always unique though concept is same. After working on few such projects, one particular project presented completely different challenge which required a new concept altogether. This is where one gets a chance to express their thoughts to the fullest. I got such a chance and today a joint patent is filled along with our chairman Ravi Pandit & Tejas Kshatriya. A team is now working hard round the clock on developing the product.

Talking about chance, I guess each and every KPITe has one. KPIT focusing so much on new technologies and products gives everyone a chance to think freely and innovate. And if a young employee like me gets to file a patent and develop the product, I would say it’s not just a chance but a FAIR chance!

And for all the non-KPITes – If you are not the one to throw lousy comments on problems, join us and make the difference!

Sometimes, winning is everything ..

KPIT Premier League – Season 1

60 registrations, 16 teams to play. Our team was lucky enough to get a place.

I was the captain of “Team R&D-Spark plugs”. Team with the best players, fastest bowlers – we had them (Rana, Sanket), the MCGrath’s of line (Ajay, Rohan) – we had them, Gayle – we had him to open the innings (Sudhir), Dravids – to take up any job on the field (Chandra, Gaurav, Amar, Tarun, Isheet) and wild card (Vinayak). We could not have Girish just because of foolish mistake of not reading the rules properly!

Cricket ground

Ground for KPL

We had been playing on Baner grounds since 2 months, not for KPL but just for the game and fitness. KPL came along the way and we thought of participating in it. I must say, out of thousands of employees, coming up with team with such a variety of talent was a big task. Fortunately, we had an upper hand here with team ready and nicely practiced.

It seemed almost certain to us that we would lift the cup, no matter who the opponents are. Such was the confidence or overconfidence I would say!

25th MAy’13: Day 1 of KPL and our first match

Team was all set and excited. We lost the toss and put on to bat first. It din’t quite matter to us as we thought we would be comfortable in either of the conditions.

The boundaries were smaller than what we have at the Baner ground, it was a confidence lifting sign for our hard hitters. Looking at this, we altered our opening pair, I normally open the innings and keep a stand on one side but not today. We thought to capitalize the close boundaries from over 1!

The match began and we had our first six! A perfect start. But guess what, opponents had the perfect start as well with our Gayle getting run-out in the very first over.

One after the other, the wickets kept falling with catches all over the ground. We set a target of 56 in 9 overs, much lower to our expectations and capacity.

In our bowling innings, we hardly had a situation in hand with such a small total. To add into that, we missed couple of important catches and a run out!

Over, the match was over and we walked out of the field with heads bowed down with disappointment.

The real question is, what caused the disappointment? Well, its not overconfidence and bad performance, it is loosing, not just in Cricket but in anything.

So what were the take-aways?

1. Plan your tasks in advance and divide them into smaller tasks | Strategy for the match

2. Stick to your gut feeling and back your strategy | Don’t change the batting orders or bowling sequences at the last moment

3. See the path not the goal | KPL cup was the Mirage we tried to run behind, instead we could have taken the first match seriously.

4. I was the reason | Do not play blame games, you have lost / won, that’s it. It was a team effort. Cursing your self / someone will not get you another chance!

5. Its NOT just a game | Winning is everything. Don’t pamper your self with words like “Its just a game”. No, it is not. Try to win every TASK of your life and Push your self. Always have take-aways from whatever you do and try to continuously improve.

Best of hard work to rest of the KPL teams.

Update: We were in the finals in KPIT Premier League – Season 2 (2014) !!
