Massive thanks to everyone who came last night! We filled to capacity and – with the exception of some TV theme tune intros from the pub quiz downstairs – the night went really smoothly! Massive thank you to our speakers: Pam, Helena and Jake! Check out the pics below!

Please feel free to make suggestions on how we can improve the night, it was both mine and Arne’s first time organising and hosting a public event, so we’d appreciate any feedback! And get in touch if you’d like to speak!

We have a venue! And our first speakers!

Hi all,

Apologies it’s been a little quiet on the social media front, but we’re pleased to announce our first PubhD event will take place on Wednesday 1st June at The Robin Hood on St. Michael’s Hill at 7:30 p.m.

Our first speakers will be:

Pam Lock, PhD student at the University of Bristol – “Drinking and drunkenness in Victorian fiction”

Helena Quilter, PhD student in Sustainable Plastics at the University of Bath – “Pining For Plastics”

Jake Barber, MRes Health Sciences at the University of Bristol:
“Little Pricks: Improving the Efficiency of Nanospikes Against Bacteria”

Talks will be 10 minutes followed by a short Q & A.

We’ll be passing a pint glass around between the talks so please donate £1 to buy the speakers a well-earned drink!

We’ve posted an event on Facebook to get an idea of numbers so please RSVP if you’ll be coming! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Bristol PubhD is now live!

Hi all,

Myself (Travis) and Arne (“Arnie”) are two PhD students at the University of Bristol. We’re part of a wider BBSRC Doctoral Training Programme and, along with some fellow PhD students at the University of Exeter, are in the process of setting up some PubhD venues in the South West (check out their WordPress page here).

So what is PubhD? PubhD is a platform for PhD students and researchers from any discipline to talk about their work. This talk is to a general audience at a local establishment readily stocked with ethanol: the pub. The scheme has had great success in many cities around the UK (and even internationally – check out the founding page here). The entry fee is £1 and all speakers get a free drink.

We’re currently in the process of nailing down a venue in Bristol but if you want to get involved as a speaker then get in touch via Facebook, Twitter or e-mail.
