How to handle life’s challenges after healing from divorce

The past few weeks have been tough for me, and have tested my resilience and choices I made. But it’s not my first rodeo so I have to remind myself that it is simply LIFE, and that I will get past this part.
After my healing journey from divorce I was so happy and free and capable…and I still am, years later. But like everyone experiences, there are rough patches. Life will do what it does, and we will continue to be tested constantly, even after we feel we got past something major. There will be disappointments, health issues for ourselves or with those we love, loss, financial challenges, and more. It’s inevitable, because that is life in all its messy imperfection.
We can arrive at a place where we feel so good, only to be tested with a challenge down the road. If more challenges seem to pile on during the same period it can feel overwhelming, and we may question choices we made in the past. I’m not talking about the choice to leave my marriage, as that remains the choice that allowed me to be who I am now, but for some people when things get tough, this issue comes up as well.
I talk to many people who have been in my current shoes: they started going through some difficult situations in life and found themselves questioning their choices, some even questioned leaving their marriages (even though they had been through so much healing work and knew it was the right choice). But when are down fear can kick in, and this is normal.
In tough times I am reminded of how important it is to feel grateful EVERY moment, even when it seems like things are caving in and I feel like just going to sleep so as not to deal with any of it. But I know that’s not realistic and won’t help me move forward, so instead I need to understand the lesson and how to heal inside from the challenges.
Here’s what I know to be true: There WILL be situations in life that challenge us, hurt us, even scare us, long after we have healed from divorce. It’s inevitable, because we cannot control other people, nor what goes on in the world around us. But we CAN control our response to the difficult situations. If you’ve healed from divorce, one of the most difficult challenges in life on SO many levels, you can handle what life throws at you after that, because you have become a better version of you and you are amazing.
Here’s what to do in tough times. When in doubt or feeling stressed, sit quietly, breathe and focus on gratitude. We should do this every day, even when things are going well, as it reinforces our mindset and affects the way we feel, physically and emotionally. When we sit in silence and simply breathe, we calm our nervous system. If we take it a step further and start focusing on that for which we are grateful in the moment – our breath, our bodies, our minds, our ability to make choices, and all the beauty that surrounds us continuously – we can actually feel ourselves come down a level or two.
Focusing on gratitude does something to your body and your mind. It calms both and they start to relax, it stops the stress reaction, the mental chatter and questioning, and it reminds you that you DO have control over your thoughts and your responses. It creates a pause in a stormy sea where you can actually breathe and feel, let it out, and CHOOSE to exist in gratitude – and you can take it with you when you open your eyes and move on with the day.
Try it – it is amazing what a difference it makes. This has been my rock these last few months. Remembering why I am grateful somehow changes the trajectory of my day, and enables me to find moments of joy. I open my eyes and know I will be ok, and that this shall pass, and I know this because looking at the big picture of my life, I feel so blessed to be here.
So I sit in gratitude several times a day, and I catch the beauty all around me as well – looking up at the clouds, hearing the morning birdsong as the new day begins, watching my dog wag her tail when I come home, talking to my children, parents and friends and hearing about their lives…these are the things that truly matter. They help ground me and make me feel whole, like the troubles don’t control me, nor do they dictate the direction I am headed or the way I feel about life.
Remember that you can always find these little windows of beauty – just go outside, call someone who loves you, play with a child or pet, take a hot bath, dance, hug those you love, hug yourself. It is not permanent, and it too shall pass.
If you are going through challenges, I send you love. Know that you have the strength and ability to get through it. 🩵
