Almost every atom heavier than helium was forged in stars and their deaths. The calcium in your bones, the iron in your blood — all of it came from stars that lived and died before the Earth existed. “Star stuff” takes that settled science and reads it as an argument about belonging: if we’re all made of the same stellar matter, then neurodivergent and disabled people belong here fully — not despite our differences, but as part of the universe knowing itself in every possible way. Nothing here was arrived at in a straight line: these are cosmic connections, built across disciplines and out of each other's work.

We Are All Star Stuff asks what that means to you. We're collecting short pieces, a few sentences to a few paragraphs, from Autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, disabled and otherwise neurodivergent people, and from the family members, educators and community members who love them. For forty-nine issues this project has signed off Love you down to your star stuff, and the grammar of that phrase has been doing the hardest work on the site. The subject is us, not the cosmos — and “down to” measures how far the love reaches, not why it is given. The star stuff is the extent of the claim, not its warrant. Which matters, because grinding the universe down and sieving it turns up no atom of justice in the powder: a belonging claim resting on “variation persists in nature” would be revoked by any paper finding that it doesn't, and the same move run backwards is how eugenics argued. Ours never rested there. Includes the sentence we did write once, in the colophon of Zine No. 1, and repaired in the same breath. Two rules follow. Every piece here is a lie-to-children in Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart's sense — honest only where it marks the rung it stops at, which is what “a rhyme, not a proof” has been doing unnamed — and the ladder has a moral limit as well as an epistemic one. And First Sight and Second Thoughts, from Pratchett's Wintersmith, names what the six gates and the public changelog implement, with the catch that only the second half can ever be automated. Average the light of 200,000 galaxies and you get a warm off-white someone named cosmic latte — and the first published answer was pale turquoise, wrong because the software assumed a reddish white point, corrected in public within weeks by the astronomers who got it wrong. The most-shared fact about the colour of the universe is an erratum, and that is the whole argument for an open repository. What is public here, in nouns: the pages, the ledger, the errors, the reasoning, the tools, the index — and the one thing deliberately kept private, your search query, which never leaves your browser. Then the machines in detail: six automated gates, what each one asks, and the fault that created it — 44 pages that printed blank, four links nested inside a link, three collisions every other gate passed, a live zine never listed in the sitemap, a page indexed at 12% that passed its own check. Plus the rules those failures produced: measure, don't count; wait on a condition, never a clock; a page nobody looked at reads UNREAD, never ok. There is only one air: a single, well-mixed body with no walls in it, so thoroughly circulated that your next breath very likely holds atoms once breathed by strangers and by trees across the world. It's a reciprocal breath — we exhale what plants inhale, and our oxygen is the exhaust of ancient cyanobacteria (the Great Oxidation Event, ~2.4 billion years ago), forged first in stars. Every room we share is a shared-air space (a term coined by Helen Edgar & Ryan Boren): in it we trade breath and co-regulate, nervous systems settling into a shared rhythm. The neurodiversity turn: many of us are the canaries of that room. Miners carried canaries because the birds felt the bad air first — not because they were weak, but because they were sensitive, and their alarm was information. Our sensitivity to fragrance, stale air, and fluorescent hum is an early-warning system, not a flaw: don't blame the bird, change the air — build it breathable for the canaries and it's breathable for all. Which raises the harder question: habitable, and for whom? The burden of shared air falls unevenly, so breathable air is a commons, not a private accommodation one person quietly manages. The response is solarpunk: clean air as infrastructure as resistance — open windows, plants, masks, DIY Corsi–Rosenthal boxes — mutual aid you can build in an afternoon. The electromagnetic spectrum is one continuous field: radio waves and starlight are the same phenomenon at different wavelengths, and the same physics that carries a voice call carries a star's light. Shared-signal space — a term coined by Helen Edgar — is the counterpart to shared-air space: a call, a message, a voice note, a synthesised voice, carrying the rhythm on a signal instead of the air of a room. A voice note is breath, timestamped and sent; co-regulation crosses a screen too — thinner, but real (Porges; Streuber et al.). For many of us, text and AAC aren't a fallback from speech but the clearer channel — thinking time, structure, fewer sensory demands, a record to return to (Howard & Sedgewick) — and AAC is the real communication, not a workaround. Aversion to the phone is information, not fragility. Reachable, and for whom? Communication access is a commons; we build our own watering holes — the Autistic Rhizome (Edgar), Discords, AAC — sideways and underground, where lurking counts. The oldest signal of all is a dead star's light still reaching your eye: signal lets connection cross a gap touch can't, so no channel is the master channel (Milton). Gauss proved in 1827 that no flat map can preserve everything. An IQ score is literally a projection — so it must destroy information.

Try wrapping a sheet of paper smoothly around an orange. It creases, always, and that is not clumsiness — it is forbidden. Gauss proved it in 1827 and liked the result enough to call it the Theorema Egregium, the remarkable theorem: a surface’s curvature is intrinsic, so bending that doesn’t stretch can never change it. Paper rolls into a tube or a cone because those are still flat in the sense that matters; a sphere is not, and no care gets you there. You have used this today without noticing — fold a pizza slice and the tip stops drooping, because curving it one way forces it to stay straight the other. The consequence: no flat map of the world can preserve everything, and every projection must sacrifice area, angle, distance or direction. Mercator chose angle, in 1569, so a constant compass bearing would be a straight line — superb for sailors, and it swells Greenland to the apparent size of an Africa roughly fourteen times larger. The map never says what it chose, and that silence is the scandal rather than the distortion. Then Tissot’s answer from 1859, which is the honest one: you cannot remove the distortion, so draw it — a grid of ellipses showing exactly what this map did to this place. And then the turn. An IQ score, a DSM-5 support level, a functioning label: each takes a many-axis person and returns one value, which is not a metaphor but literally a projection — so it must destroy information, the choice of what to destroy is somebody’s, and the number never records it. Worse than a map, in fact: a Mercator keeps every place badly, while a single number doesn’t distort the other dimensions, it deletes them. Ask what a summary was optimised for and you learn whose journey it serves — Mercator for sailors, a support level for a budget, a functioning label for a gate. If you must summarise, publish the indicatrix: the axes it came from, the range it moves across, what it was built for, reviewed by the person measured. But the physics runs further than the sentence does, and there is another word waiting at the end of it. Romano, Behrendt & Burkert (2024) followed remnants through their long cold decline and found the radiative phase divides into four stages — and the last one they call the cloud phase. Not the end phase. Not the dispersal phase. The cloud phase: once nothing is driving the shell and the pressure inside has fallen to match the pressure outside, nothing holds the cavity open, so the remnant falls back into itself and settles as a chemically enriched cloud. That is a 2024 simulation and it is held here as proposed, flagged in place — because the argument's weight sits somewhere firmer. Murray (2011) measured what clouds actually do: in the Milky Way's most luminous star-forming complexes, the star formation efficiency averages 0.08, so ninety-two percent of the cloud never becomes a star — and that is the flattering number, since the Galactic average of 0.005 puts it nearer ninety-nine and a half. A giant molecular cloud lasts 27 ± 12 million years, and the bright episode inside it is short, late, and the thing that tears the cloud apart. Which turns the story the other way round: the in-between is not the wait between the real states. It is the majority state, by mass and by duration — and that is a measurement, offered as fact rather than as comfort. Along the way, SN 1987A: at least 0.2 solar masses of dust condensed inside its own wreckage, grains that did not exist anywhere before the star died. The debris field is a foundry. Written after Helen Edgar, whose Supernova Remnant and Emergence Point map the same stage from the inside — burnout as “remnants of my old self entangled in new ways of being,” recovery as re-assembly rather than return, and deterritorialisation as “a soft loosening of pressure.” A cloud never decides to collapse; it is collapsed upon, by gravity and radiation and its neighbours, so the honest question when one of us reorganises is what the pressure is and where it comes from. Held with care throughout: gestation is not a promise of a star, most of the mass never lights, and the claim is only that the cloud is a real state, not a waiting room. A star that shares a system with another star already has a name, and it is astronomy’s own working word: a companion star. Helen Edgar’s thirteenth constellation carries it — “the people who orbit close … who don’t need me to perform and who just ‘get it’.” But before any of that, a correction, because this collection exists partly to take science back from the version that travels furthest. You have met the line most stars are in binaries — the Sun is the odd one out. It isn’t so. Charles Lada put the binary statistics beside the stellar mass function in 2006 and published the answer as his title: most stars are single — two-thirds of main-sequence systems in the Galactic disk. Multiplicity climbs steeply with mass (~26% of M dwarfs, 44 ± 2% of Sun-like stars, near-total for the most massive), and the galaxy is overwhelmingly made of the small end. So this zine will not tell you that everybody has their people. The claim it makes instead is smaller and holds all the way down: where the binding is real, here is exactly what it is. Sirius A and its white-dwarf companion trace a 50.13-year orbit about a barycentre lying in neither star — and equal binding is not equal motion, since the heavier body is displaced less, which is worth saying out loud for anyone who has been told they’re imagining who does more of the moving. Then the hardest spread: bring two stars close and they do deform each other — stretched to ellipsoids, drawn to teardrops, finally sharing one dumbbell envelope with matter crossing between them. Proximity is not automatically good. It is the wide pairs — bound out to a parsec, one orbit longer than the whole history of flowering plants — where both keep their shape. And then the turn, which is theorems rather than reading: with two bodies you can write the solution down, but Bruns (1887) proved no further algebraic integrals exist, Poincaré (1890) closed off the single-valued analytic ones, and Sundman’s 1912 series converges far too slowly to use. So these systems are stepped forward numerically, together, and no one body’s path can be solved on its own and the others added afterward. That same work is where chaos was found — and the part the popular word destroys is that nothing is random: every rule is exact and known, and the system is still unpredictable far out. Read beside the language this community built first — David Gray-Hammond’s Chaotic Self (“you can’t unqueer a queer mind”) and Autistic Rhizome, with Helen’s Rhizome Array and Mycelial Stars — and holding the tension honestly rather than smoothing it: the rhizome describes resilience, no node depending on another to exist; the three-body physics describes non-separability while bodies are bound. Nobody has photographed a black hole, and nobody will. A camera works by catching light that left the subject, and the event horizon is the surface where every outward direction has stopped existing — so the ordinary way of knowing a thing is simply unavailable, and no better lens fixes it. What the Event Horizon Telescope released in April 2019 and May 2022 is a shadow: the set of directions in which light that might have reached you went into the hole instead, ringed by the light that passed far enough out to be bent around and escape. Then the fact this zine is built on, which is exact geometry rather than an impression. For a non-spinning black hole the event horizon sits at 2 GM/c² and the edge of the shadow at 3√3 GM/c² — so the dark circle is about 2.6 times wider than the object casting it. Gravity does not merely hide the thing; it magnifies the hiding. And that magnification is nearly constant across spins and viewing angles (5 ± 0.2 GM/Dc², a spread of about four percent), which is the only reason anyone can work backwards from it. The instrument was the planet: eight radio telescopes at six sites from Spain to the South Pole, observing at 1.3 mm, writing ~3.5 petabytes to helium-filled hard drives that had to be flown to two correlators — the Antarctic share stranded until the winter ended. No site saw the ring; no site could have. Four imaging teams then worked blind to one another, on two different families of algorithm, because everyone involved knew what they hoped to find. M87*’s ring came out at 42 ± 3 microarcseconds — an orange, on the Moon. Sagittarius A* was harder despite being nearer, because its innermost orbit takes about thirty minutes against M87*’s thirty days: the subject rearranges itself while the shutter is open. Then the turn, in two halves. Some things are known only by their effect on everything around them — monotropism, pain, a sensory environment, an access need — and the absence of a photograph was never evidence of an absent thing. But the geometry has a second half, and this piece does not stop before it: what people see of an unmet need is the disruption, not the need, and the disruption is the larger object, inflated by every year of bending and masking and quiet accommodation that got folded into it. In physics you can divide the factor out. In a life there is none, which is exactly why you ask. In 1604 Johannes Kepler was drawing the geometry of an eclipse and ran out of language. The Sun is not a point of light but a disc, so every part of it throws a shadow in a slightly different direction and the result comes out layered: a core where the whole disc is hidden, an outer region where some of it still shines through, and between them no edge at all — just a handover. He had umbra for the core. For the handover he had nothing. So in the middle of a diagram in Ad Vitellionem Paralipomena he made one: quod est inter KE, NM penumbra dicatur — let what lies between be called penumbra. The verb is dicatur, let it be called; that is not a man using a word, it is the word being made because a drawing demanded it. Paene plus umbra: almost-shadow, and what gets named is neither the dark nor the light but the thing between them. Astronomy keeps three zones now, and the third is the one nobody has heard of: the antumbra, past the shadow cone’s apex, where the Moon sits entirely in front of the Sun — nothing sticking out, nothing off to one side — and it is still not a total eclipse, because the Moon is simply too small in your sky to cover what is behind it. Complete obstruction, and the darkness never comes. Two words would have forced that case into one of the other two and both would have been wrong. Then the pair of facts this zine refuses to separate. First, the partial zone is the enormous one: the umbral track lands as a stripe a hundred-odd kilometres wide while the penumbra covers thousands, so the overwhelming majority of everyone who has ever seen a solar eclipse saw a partial one. The penumbra is where we live; totality is the exception. Second, and cutting the other way, 99 percent obscured is still daylight. The corona is only about as bright as a full Moon, and the surviving sliver of photosphere is hundreds to thousands of times brighter than that — so it obliterates the corona and keeps the sky blue. Illuminance falls roughly a hundred-fold in the last two minutes, another order of magnitude in the final half minute, more than four orders of magnitude in all. The last increment is not an increment; it is a change of state, and on the far side of it the birds go quiet. Gradient and threshold, and any account that can hold only one of them is describing something other than the world — all gradient gives you “everyone’s a bit like that” and owes nobody anything; all threshold gives you the eligibility form and makes the enormous middle vanish. Two other fields worked this out and reached for Kepler’s word, both times because a binary would cost lives. In 1981 Astrup, Siesjö and Symon found two thresholds in ischaemic brain — electrical failure, then ion-pump failure — and named the zone between them the ischaemic penumbra: functionally silent, structurally intact, salvageable on reperfusion. That word is the reason acute stroke has a treatment window at all; every intervention is aimed at the penumbra, because the core is past help and the healthy tissue does not need it. And in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) Justice Douglas held that guarantees have “penumbras, formed by emanations” — a borrowing the zine presents alongside its critics rather than beneath them, since a shadow with no measurable edge can be stretched to cover whatever the reader wanted covered. The turn: partial support is not proportional support. Ninety percent of a ramp is a wall; captions that drop out for the last two minutes did not deliver 98 percent of the talk; almost accessible is a phase change away from accessible. And the most hopeful sentence here is the least sentimental one, carried over from 1981 — in the penumbra, what looks like loss is often deprivation, and deprivation is reversible if you can see the zone exists and get there in time. Impaired is not lost. And the distinction the piece owes, which is the sharpest thing in it: an umbra is a relation between a source, an obstruction and a place — never a property of the ground it falls on. The pavement does not have an umbra; it is in one, and nothing about the pavement is different. So a total blockage of support is real and is a fact about an arrangement somebody built and can unbuild. An umbra located inside a person is a category error. Functioning labels perform exactly that relocation — high-functioning, severe, level 3 take a shadow cast by circumstances and write it on a body — and “profound autism”, proposed in the Lancet Commission (2021) for people held to be “not able to advocate for themselves,” is the umbra version of the move. Steven Kapp’s 2023 review finds that minimally speaking Autistic people can communicate, especially with responsive partners, and can self-advocate — which makes that criterion partly a statement about the listener, the method and the room. So profound reads deprivation as loss, on a person. Refusing the label is not a denial of anyone’s support needs, and the zine says so plainly, crediting Helen Edgar: “Autistic people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and health needs are not ‘Profoundly Autistic,’ they are autistic with specific needs.” Thirteen spreads, five diagrams, a “Not:” set that now refuses the bodymind umbra first. The Sun lights one hemisphere of the Moon. Not usually, not on average — continuously, without a single interruption that was not an eclipse. Which means a crescent Moon is not a Moon that has had most of its light taken away. It is a fully half-lit Moon seen nearly edge-on to its own daylight, and the illuminated hemisphere is exactly as large at new Moon as at full. Nothing dims. Nothing is withheld. Nothing is recovering. What changes over a month is not the Moon but the angle between the Sun, the Moon and you — a phase needs three bodies, and one of them is the observer, so there is no fact about “what phase the Moon is in” that does not have your position inside it. The US Naval Observatory is precise about where that leads: New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter are defined to occur when the excess of the Moon’s apparent ecliptic longitude over the Sun’s is 0°, 90°, 180° and 270° — which makes them instants, moments with no duration — while waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous and waning crescent are the roughly week-long stretches between them. So the familiar chart of eight equal boxes is really four knife-edges and four long weeks, drawn over an illuminated fraction that changes smoothly and without a single step. The boxes are ours; we drew them because a chart needs boxes, and then began reading them back as though we had found them. And because the observer is one arm of the angle, moving you changes the answer: at one instant, one lit fraction, one Moon, the crescent is lit along the right edge from Edinburgh, along the left from Melbourne, and underneath near the equator, riding low as a bowl — a wet moon, tipped up to hold the rain. Three drawings, three correct answers, nobody seeing an illusion. Then the correction the language has been getting wrong for a century: there is a far side and there is no dark side. The far side receives exactly as much sunlight as the face we know, and at new Moon — the one night we can see nothing at all — it is in full daylight, the whole hemisphere blazing, entirely unwitnessed. Luna 3 went and looked on 7 October 1959, returning 29 grainy frames of about seventy percent of it after developing the film in a small automated darkroom it was carrying and scanning the negatives home across the vacuum. What came back was not a shadow but a sunlit landscape, crowded with craters, nearly free of maria. It had been like that the whole time. Nor is the lock rigid: libration in longitude and latitude shows us about 59 percent of the surface rather than half, so even the thing we describe as fixed turns out to be negotiating. The phases are complements — our new Moon is a full Earth seen from there, and at every instant the two sum to one whole, so the light is never missing, only ever somewhere you are not standing. The ashen glow on a crescent’s dark limb is that light returned: earthshine, the old Moon in the new Moon’s arms, explained by Leonardo around 1506 in the Codex Leicester, never published, and slightly wrong (he credited the oceans; it is mostly clouds). The first published explanation is credited to Michael Mästlin, who taught Kepler at Tübingen — teacher and student either side of the same refusal to accept a picture with only two states in it. And the month you live by is longer than the orbit it is made of: 27.32 days to complete a full circuit against the stars, but 29.53 to return to the same phase, because Earth moved roughly 27° meanwhile and the alignment slid forward. You can finish the circle and still not count as returned, because the thing you are measured against keeps moving. The turn: waxing and waning are words about the geometry. They are not words about the Moon, and nothing in the Moon does them. A functioning label is a phase recorded as a substance — it takes the crescent and files it as the whole Moon there is — and “but she seems fine with me” is not a fact about her, it is a report of one angle offered as though it were the object. And the turn is landed in a life rather than left abstract: Ryan Boren’s own account of being “both r-word and genius” across one school career. Hyperlexic and Autistic, he would not read aloud — situational mutism and exposure anxiety “locked my lips” — until one day, in a quiet corner with a semblance of psychological safety, he read a book cover to cover in a whisper and asked, “Can I go now?” He describes going “from being a full time r-word to a part time one, depending on who was in the room with me and if I felt safe enough speak” — a phase, recorded in the vocabulary of proportion, with the observer’s position stated plainly by the person being measured. And his sentence “Autistic people are psychological safety barometers” inverts the whole measurement, because a barometer’s reading is a fact about the surrounding air: the instrument was reading the room, and the room wrote the result down as a fact about the child. The guardrail gets its own spread, because the easy version of this argument is cruel: a crescent really does deliver less light to you. Measurably. The correction is not that the difference is imaginary but that it is located in the arrangement — and the refusals set turns down “just make them feel safe” as a new flattening, since the point is that the variables are in the arrangement, not that there is only one of them. The Five Neurodivergent Love Locutions — infodumping, parallel play, support swapping, deep pressure, penguin pebbling — set beside five mechanisms by which matter is actually assembled, on the argument that these are construction methods, not compensations. The deficit story ranks all five as thin stand-ins for the real thing: real conversation, real play, real gifts. That story needs them to be structurally deficient forms of connection. Structurally, they are how things get built. Infodumping: a star cannot stop telling you what it is made of. Every photon leaving passes out through the star’s own atmosphere and each element takes its specific bite out of the spectrum, so the light arrives carrying a complete, unedited account of the composition, whether or not anyone is reading. Fraunhofer catalogued the dark lines in 1814 without knowing what they were; Kirchhoff and Bunsen established in 1859–60 that each is an element’s fingerprint; Cecilia Payne read hydrogen out of them in 1925 and was pressured to soften a conclusion that was right. We know we are star stuff because stars will not shut up about themselves — which makes the unasked-for infodump the entire evidentiary basis of this collection. Parallel play: filed for decades as a developmental stage, something to be passed through. The sky’s version is the wide binary, and El-Badry, Rix and Heintz catalogue 1.3 million of them in Gaia eDR3, genuinely bound at separations out to a full parsec — 3.26 light years — neither star perturbing the other, orbits so long no observer will see one completed. Nothing is being worked toward; there is no closer configuration this rehearses. Wide binaries are not failed close binaries, they are the commonest stable outcome the galaxy produces. Support swapping: W Ursae Majoris contact binaries overflow into a single shared convective envelope, and energy crossing it from the larger star to the smaller holds both within about 200 K of each other despite a mass ratio near 0.3 — the smaller star running far hotter than its own mass could sustain, because capacity is redistributed by the configuration they are in together. And the complication that keeps it honest, because support swapping is not free: in Algol systems mass flows one way, and the star that was originally more massive gave away so much of itself that it ended up the less massive, less luminous, apparently less-developed one. Crawford resolved that paradox in 1955 — the one that looks behind is the one that gave, its donation written down as apparent deficiency. Deep pressure: the locution with the bluntest name, and nothing fuses unsqueezed. A star simply is hydrostatic equilibrium, the balance between gravity pulling in and pressure pushing out, held for billions of years; the solar core sits near 2.4 × 1016 Pa, over 200 billion atmospheres. Take the crushing away and there is no carbon, no oxygen, no iron, no calcium in the bone. The pressure is not a condition the star endures on the way to making elements — the pressure is the manufacturing process. Penguin pebbling: the one most readily filed as sweet-but-slight, and the one with the sharpest physics behind it. Classical planetesimal accretion could not finish a giant-planet core before the gas disk dissipated — the big collisions were simply too slow, and without a core in time there is no atmosphere to capture. Pebble accretion, named by Lambrechts and Johansen in 2012, gets there in 10⁴–10⁶ years, because millimetre-scale pebbles are aerodynamically braked and captured across nearly the whole Hill sphere. The small offerings did not supplement the big collisions; the big collisions could not do the job and the small offerings could. For those cores, the small offering is not a lesser route — it is the route. It even stops itself: past ten to twenty Earth masses the core opens a pressure bump and the pebbles are halted before arrival, so even the sky knows when someone has had enough pebbles. Then the turn, printed on the face of the zine rather than buried in a footnote, because five-for-five is exactly the shape of a claim that circulates for being tidy rather than true. The physics does not justify the love. The universe is not signing anything off, and if it were, its approval would be worthless — a universe that could approve could also decline. This is the same defect the site caught in a sentence of its own: the universe loves you for it makes the star stuff the reason, and a reason can be revoked, where love you down to your star stuff measures how far the loving reaches rather than why it is given. Down to is not because of. Amythest Schaber originated the five; Stimpunks popularized them and put them into currency from 2022, substituting locutions for languages; the term penguin pebbling reached us later, through Lindsey; and Helen Edgar of Autistic Realms has developed the framework furthest, including the Penguin Pebbling game built with Ryan Boren. That claim is falsifiable, because a template predicts one specific thing: sameness, between individuals and within one individual across attempts. Somebody went and measured whether the sameness is there. Southern Botswana, seven colour-ringed male Southern Masked weavers, territories searched daily so a nest was found at the moment it was started; camcorders square to the branch, three nests filmed per bird — twenty-one nests — and the footage coded by a researcher blind to which bird and which date. During the first phase of construction not one measured behaviour was repeatable within a male: not the direction he carried the grass, not how long he wove, not which quadrant he favoured, not how often he lost hold. Then the individuality: two birds consistently pushed the first end of a blade into the right side of the nest, two consistently into the left, three had no side at all — and pooled across all seven, the bias vanished (G = 0.06, p = 0.81). Personal handedness with no species handedness underneath it, which is precisely what a template cannot produce. And they improved: across a season each male dropped grass less often as he built more nests (p < 0.01), while the birds with the most consistent personal style finished the ring phase fastest (R² = 0.25) — a way of one's own was not an eccentricity to be corrected, it was the thing that made him quick. Thirteen years later the harder finding: forty-three white-browed sparrow weaver family groups build architecturally distinct roosts, some with long entrance tubes and some with almost none, stable across years, differing between groups whose territories sit metres apart in the same trees, and not explained by weather, body size, tree height or kinship — then the closer, that the styles are robust to immigration. Not a template and not the environment: a tradition. Set beside all of this is David Gray-Hammond's account of his own room — the diffuser, the books read several at once, the nothing-tidied-away because some days end in a crash rather than a decision — and his sentence about it: to most, it appears that I live in a state of chaos… I know where every item I need resides. The refusals are printed on the zine's face rather than left implied. Not permission from nature, because a universe that could approve could also decline, and down to is not because of. Not instinct versus learning. Not a clever-animal story, since the authors themselves attribute the improvement to increasing dexterity and say any role for cognition still needs demonstrating. And the honest one: not every mess is a nest — burnout collapses the architecture, and the ruins look from the doorway exactly like the curated version. What the science kills is narrower and sturdier for being narrow: the inference that an order you cannot read is not an order. Two centuries of confident observers looked at a nest and saw a machine executing, and were describing the limits of watching while calling it a fact about the bird. More than eighty per cent of a hatchling's calcium came from the wall it broke. The word is borrowed and this zine says so.

In the trans community, getting your egg cracked is the moment somebody knows and accepts that they are trans; the therapist Essy Knopf extended the term to Autistic and ADHD experience in 2025, and credited its origin himself. The word is borrowed and this zine says so — no individual coined it, and Evelyn Bauer's history for Them traces the earliest documented use to an Urban Dictionary entry in August 2016 and finds even Susan Stryker unable to date her own first encounter with it. What the zine argues with is not Knopf but what happens to the metaphor afterwards, when repetition flattens it into a door: one threshold, crossed once, a settled person on the far side. So we checked it against some eggs. The shell does not get thinner. From about day eleven the chorioallantoic membrane dissolves calcium out of the wall, and Halgrain and colleagues measured the result — thickness between day 0 and day 15 not significantly different (p = 0.110), breaking strength between day 11 and day 15 significantly reduced (p = 0.007). Measure it and nothing is happening. Weigh what it can bear and everything is. Nobody could see it; there was nothing to see. Then where the calcium goes: the shell supplies more than eighty per cent of all the calcium a chick embryo gets, roughly 2.2 grams, and at hatch the skeleton holds about three quarters of the calcium in the whole animal. The container becomes the frame, by mass, and there is no moment where one ends and the other begins — and since collagen is piezoelectric, as Iwao Yasuda showed in the 1950s, the wall you broke is now the part of you that turns pressure into charge. Third, the messy middle is a documented stage: at internal pipping the beak enters the air cell and the lungs begin working while the shell is still whole, a staged handover Margaret Vince traced in three parts. From outside, an unmarked egg. Fourth, quail embryos click, and an egg set in a clutch a day late speeds up and hatches with the others — while a slower click rate retards the ones ahead. Synchronisation runs both ways: the ones ahead slow down and wait. And the close, from Mair and colleagues' 2026 study of 225 posts: not a door but an oscillating Grief, Relief, and Belief Cycle, whose fourth theme is post-diagnosis burnout, with the authors asking that identification be treated as a first step rather than a terminal component of a service. The refusals are on the zine's face. Not cracking somebody else's egg — the egg tooth is on the inside of the shell, and you can only click. Not the person before was fake. Not a graduation. Not permission from nature, because chick embryos have no identities and down to is not because of. And not the egg as the enemy, which is the uncomfortable one, because masking cost us enormously and also got some of us here alive. Ten spreads, four diagrams. A rhyme, not a proof.

On a measured discrepancy, ninety-three years of refusing to say where it lives, and the same question closed on day one.

The most famous rotation-curve paper never uses the word dark. It says mass lies beyond the optical image — exactly what was measured.

Helen Edgar’s first constellation, of twenty, is the Dark Matter Field — “the heavy darkness of neuronormativity… the accumulated weight we carry around of a world that does not meet our needs.” Nos. 45 and 46 both said in their colophons that this naming was being kept back. This is the piece that spends it, and the order of borrowing is stated on spread two: her naming came first, the physics is set beside it afterward, and the reverse move is the one this collection exists to refuse. Then ninety-three years of the most careful attribution on record. Fritz Zwicky (1933) applied the virial theorem to seven galaxies in the Coma cluster and found the average density “would have to be at least 400 times greater than that derived on the basis of observations of luminous matter” — he had the number, he had the phrase dark matter, and he closed the section by calling it “an unsolved problem.” The first thing a careful person does with a discrepancy is decline to place it. Forty-seven years later the famous paper comes apart under reading. Rubin, Ford & Thonnard (ApJ 238, 471, 1980) do not report flat rotation curves: “Most rotation curves are rising slowly even at the farthest measured point,” and the negative claim is narrower still — “Neither high nor low luminosity Sc galaxies have falling rotation curves.” Their conclusion says where and refuses to say what: “must have significant mass located beyond the optical image.” The word “dark” never appears in the abstract, and the subject heading as printed is galaxies : internal motions. In 2000 Rubin was still withholding: “Surprisingly, we cannot yet rule out a modified gravitational potential, rather than dark matter” — and “it is folly to believe that we know what a galaxy is, while the extent, the density distribution, and the composition of ≥90% of its mass are still a dark mystery.” Then the zine corrects itself on the page. It was proposed on the premise that the field is “never directly observed, only detected by its distorting effect,” with lensing offered as proof of that — but lensing is the instrument that made the direct detection. Clowe et al. (2006) measured an “8-sigma significance spatial offset” in the Bullet Cluster that “cannot be explained with an alteration of the gravitational force law.” The premise had to go, and spread seven keeps the correction rather than quietly dropping it. What is still open is the particle, not the mass: LZ and XENONnT have both come up empty, and the searches are widening to axion-like particles and dark photons. Two claims held apart, because collapsing either one is the misuse. The argument itself is structural. A gap between what a model predicts and what a body does can live in exactly three places — the mass, the law, or the measurement — and astronomy has argued all three in public, with rivals named and nulls published. Asked about a child, the same question was closed on day one and the residual placed in the child: not the fluorescent hum, not the unannounced transition, not the six hours of masking, not Milton’s double empathy problem. The claim is precise and the sloppy version is not ours — not that the environmental attribution is obviously right, but that it was never treated as an open question. No rival funded, nothing in the criteria reading “we cannot yet rule out.” Where the analogy breaks is stated at full strength rather than hedged: neuronormativity is unmarked, not unobserved. It is written down — criteria, intervention targets, the compliance goal on an education plan, “culture fit,” the seating chart. Dark matter is hidden by nature; this is hidden by convention, and a convention is a decision that can be read and changed this year. The close is the sharpest thing here. Take the identical fact — unseen mass is most of what holds a galaxy together — and it reads just as naturally as the co-regulation nobody logs and the care work nobody bills. Same evidence, opposite moral, and the physics adjudicates neither: if one fact can carry two opposite morals, the moral was never in the fact. Somebody chooses, and has to own the choosing. Refusals on the face: not dark matter proving anything about a nervous system; not an argument against evidence, since careful public attribution is what we are asking for; not modified-gravity advocacy; not “you are mysterious,” because Rubin’s folly line is about a galaxy; not the inspiration story about Rubin, since borrowing it would do to her what gets done to us; and not Helen’s reading corrected. The neuronormative paradigm is Nick Walker’s (Neuroqueer Heresies, 2021), dated here via Helen Edgar’s own account at Autistic Realms and not read at the book; the double empathy problem is Damian Milton’s (2012); monotropism is Murray, Lesser & Lawson (2005). On the number that gave Brontosaurus its name back, a ruler its makers said would not travel, and an appeal they lost in public.

A category boundary that publishes its own provenance, fences its own range, names its dissenters, and can be appealed — and lost. Ask that of a cut-off score.

Every kid who loved Brontosaurus got told actually, it’s Apatosaurus, and the lesson attached was that the enthusiasm was the amateur part. Here is the paper trail. Marsh named Apatosaurus ajax in 1877 and Brontosaurus excelsus in 1879; Riggs folded the second into the first in 1903 on differences recorded as “usually considered insufficient to justify generic distinction.” Insufficient is a quantitative word with no quantity behind it — and for eighty years nobody could say insufficient by what measure, because the measure did not exist. Then Tschopp, Mateus & Benson built one, across 298 open-access pages, scoring 81 specimens against 477 morphological characters. Their methods section opens by conceding the soft part: separation “is somewhat arbitrary, in particular in paleontology, where no tests exist for the biological species concept,” and “subjectivity of these interpretations is especially great.” So they published the calibration, which is the spread this zine exists for. They counted the differences between pairs everybody already agreed were one genus — twelve between A. ajax and A. louisae, eleven between D. carnegii and D. hallorum — and set the bar one step past the largest agreed gap: “a minimum of 13 changes is herein considered necessary for generic separation.” Six for a species, deliberately generous, because “a wider margin is preferred herein in order to be more cautious.” You can argue with a number whose derivation is printed. You cannot argue with insufficient. Then the rarest move in the story: they fenced their own instrument. The numbers “cannot be applied to any other analysis, even of the same clade” — a threshold that declares its own range of validity, in advance, in the paper that depends on it. By that ruler Brontosaurus holds its own genus after 112 years, and even the headline is hedged in the abstract: “considered valid by our quantitative approach.” The method was not a rescue machine — the same pass dissolved “Dinheirosaurus” into Supersaurus and raised Galeamopus, cutting against its makers’ own earlier work. And then they filed an appeal and lost. The type specimen anchoring the whole genus Diplodocus is a partial tail the paper calls a nomen dubium, leaving “the otherwise well-known genus Diplodocus typified by a dubious species.” They petitioned the ICZN to move it — Case 3700, with a comment period and supporters — and on the last day of 2018 the Commission said no: Opinion 2425, Diplodocus longus maintained. Refused in print, with a number on it, by a body whose refusals you can look up and cite. Set the five properties beside the label on a child: published provenance, a declared range, named dissent (Prothero, four months later, under his own name), a route of appeal, a citable ruling. A cut-off score arrives already applied, says nothing about who chose it or where it stops meaning anything, and then travels across ages, countries and purposes it was never built for. The ruler that would not travel one clade sideways gets less latitude than the one we hand a five-year-old for life — and there is no Case 3700, nowhere to file, no numbered Opinion. The paperwork is not always kind either, and spread eight says so: Oviraptor means egg seizer, named in 1924 for a clutch it was brooding, corrected by Norell and colleagues in 1994 and 1995, and stuck with the libel forever under nomenclatural priority. Two ways a label outlives its refutation — priority, a rule written down, and repetition, which needs no rule at all. Only one admits it. Then the turn: Velociraptor was feathered, on the evidence of quill knobs on the ulna, and it is smaller and stranger than the movie and closer to a bad-tempered rooster, because birds are dinosaurs. Not one of these corrections made an animal less interesting. Every one made it stranger. The animals were never wrong about themselves; we were wrong about them, and being wrong out loud is what let them get better. And 298 pages is not what growing out of it looks like — it is what it looks like when nobody does. What get serious asks for is never depth, which monotropic attention already has; it is convertibility. Not that we stop being absorbed, but that we stop being absorbed for free. Bettin’s inversion holds: retained neoteny is not developmental lag but a distributed adaptive capacity that keeps a group from setting into whatever the highest-ranking person already believes. The close earns the collection. Apatosaurus louisae is estimated at about 41 tonnes of calcium phosphate, and calcium and phosphorus are made in stars — so a sauropod walked the Late Jurassic on a skeleton of dead stars, every atom second-hand and every atom still in circulation. Bone is piezoelectric, as Yasuda showed, so those animals were writing their own skeletons by walking on them; that this was true of sauropod bone is marked as an inference, not a measurement. And Sander and sixteen co-authors still report “no direct evidence on sauropod food and food processing” — the biggest animals ever to walk, and we do not know how they ate, which never made them less real. Refusals on the face: not an argument against evidence or diagnosis, since published provenance is what we are asking for; not “categories are meaningless,” because thirteen is a real bar doing real work; not a claim that taxonomy is like being labelled; not “the scientists were wrong and the kid was right,” because being corrected was never the injury and not being correctable is; not a demand that every label be revoked, since some of us want ours; and not the naturalistic fallacy, because down to is not because of. The Light Arrived Before the Name

On light-travel time, the seventy-one years it took one description of us to reach English, and the difference between what a thing is and what it ends up called.

Light leaves with nothing written on it, so every name in astronomy is an arrival record and never an origin record. Seven measured delays, and what they say about the observer.

The physics is one sentence and it does all the work: light travels at a finite speed and leaves with nothing written on it. Sunlight is eight minutes and twenty seconds old when it reaches your face; Proxima Centauri’s is 4.2 years old; Andromeda’s is 2.5 million. A photon carries a wavelength and a direction and not a discoverer — everything a star will say about itself is complete at emission, and the name gets attached at the far end, by whoever happened to be standing there with an instrument. Astronomy is honest about this and has a word for the landing: first light is the moment a new telescope opens its eye, and nobody has ever thought the telescope invented the galaxy in the frame. So a name in astronomy is an arrival record, never an origin record — and almost everything in this zine is those two things being confused, with a person in place of a star. Priority is the version written down: credit goes to whoever publishes first, and a comet takes the name of whoever files. Halley earned his fairly — he worked out that the comets of 1531, 1607 and 1682 were one object and in 1705 predicted its 1758 return — and its passages had been recorded for more than two thousand years before him. The rule never claimed otherwise. The trouble starts when the register stops saying what it is a register of. Then 1925, twice. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, Cecilia Payne submitted the thesis showing the stars are overwhelmingly hydrogen and helium; Henry Norris Russell told her it was clearly impossible, and she published with a line saying the abundance was “almost certainly not real.” Russell restated the conclusion in 1929. In Moscow — not Kiev, and the zine keeps its own corrected error on the page rather than fixing it quietly — Grunya Sukhareva finished a clinical description of six boys at the hospital-school she had founded in 1921, recording the aloneness, the flattened expression, the narrow blazing interests and the giftedness underneath. Russian in 1925, German in 1926, English in 1996. Seventy-one years, and half a century after Kanner’s and Asperger’s names were fixed to what she had described. Spread five is the structural spine: a distance is a delay, and the same quantity exists for a finding. Seven crossings, each an interval between two dated events. 168 years from Caroline Herschel’s Royal Astronomical Society Gold Medal in 1828 to the next woman’s, Vera Rubin’s, in 1996. 123 years from Matilda Joslyn Gage mapping the pattern in Woman as Inventor (1870) to Margaret Rossiter naming it the Matilda effect (1993) — the name for late naming was itself a hundred and twenty-three years late, and Rossiter did the one thing the pattern does not do by itself: she looked back down the beam and put the earlier name on it. 71 years to English. 42 years from Annie Jump Cannon joining the Harvard College Observatory in 1896 to Harvard giving her a regular appointment in 1938. 7 years from the first pulsar to a Nobel that went to Hewish and Ryle. 4 years from Payne to Russell. And Mittag-Leffler’s 1925 letter intending to nominate Henrietta Leavitt, who had died in 1921 — there was never a nomination. None of those is a claim about intent; each measures a gap, the way you measure a parallax, and the delay tells you about the observer, not the object. The Bell Burnell spread is deliberately precise where the popular telling is not: she read roughly 96 feet of chart paper a day, found a signal too regular to be noise, and is the second author on Hewish, Bell, Pilkington, Scott & Collins, Nature 217, 709 (1968), period 1.3372795 seconds. She was not written out of the paper. She was written out of the prize. And the pulses had been arriving the whole time — what 1967 changed was the listening. Refusals on the face, because six women is six situations and flattening them would be the second erasure: not that gender explains Sukhareva, since Sher & Gibson give her Jewish identity, her Russian nationality and her Russian- and German-language publication alongside it, and raise the possibility that Asperger omitted her deliberately under Nazi-era antisemitism; not that a missed prize and Stalinist violence are the same harm, since she was attacked at the 1951 Pavlovian Sessions and colleagues around her lost their lives; not that every woman here was silenced alike, since Cannon took the Henry Draper Medal in 1931 and funded the award whose first recipient in 1934 was Payne-Gaposchkin — honoured from outside, unpromoted at home, and she is the exception and forty-two years of the rule; not that recognition and justice are the same, since Herschel took the medal in 1828 and stayed her brother’s assistant on the payroll; not that these men stole, since Russell cited Payne and reported “very gratifying agreement” — the mechanism varies every time and the direction does not; not an argument against priority or citation; and not the naturalistic fallacy. Then the turn that earns the collection. The six children Sukhareva wrote down were Autistic, and so were Autistic children in 1895 and 1795 and every year nobody was taking notes. 1925 is not when we started; it is when somebody was standing there with an instrument. A diagnosis is an arrival record, and the criteria say so out loud — the DSM-5 requires symptoms “present in the early developmental period” while conceding they “may not become fully manifest until social demands exceed limited capacities, or may be masked by learned strategies in later life.” The manual is describing light-travel time. Somebody diagnosed at forty-seven has not been Autistic since they were forty-seven; the paperwork is forty-seven years old and the light is not. You can’t have been, you’d have been picked up is that confusion said out loud, and it made the receiver the origin for girls, for Black and brown children, for anyone whose flavour of it stayed indoors. There is a version of this history in which the first thing anybody read about us was written by a woman who noticed the giftedness in the same paragraph as the difficulty — because she did, and it did not arrive in time to set the tone. The close: everything heavier than hydrogen and helium was cooked inside stars and scattered when they died, and the carbon, oxygen and calcium in you crossed several billion years to arrive with no name attached and no signature required. The calcium works whether or not Payne was believed in 1925. Publishing Sukhareva’s name does not reach her — she died in 1981 — it fixes our instrument, the one we are using on the next person whose account arrives in the wrong language or the wrong decade. Down to is not because of. Eleven spreads, five diagrams. The light was never wrong. The paperwork was late.

Even Fallen Light Glows

On Neruda’s well, a rewrite made in burnout, six syllables that answered it — and the fact that fallen wood glows in the dark for no reason anyone has been able to establish.

Every known bioluminescent fungus is a white-rot decomposer, so the thing that glows is the thing that eats fallen wood. After 160 million years, nobody can say what the glow is for.

Three texts and one fungus. Neruda’s untitled poem in El mar y las campanas (1973) says that if each day falls inside each night there is a well “where clarity is imprisoned,” and instructs you to sit on the rim of the well of darkness and fish for fallen light with patience (William O’Daly’s translation, The Sea and the Bells, Copper Canyon, 1988, pp. 94–95 — read at the printed page, because every online copy is an aggregator). Read the grammar and the poem has quietly handed out two roles: the one who fishes, and the light that fell. Ryan Boren’s rewrite, made in deep Autistic burnout, moves the speaker into the wellthe rim is distant, no casting can reach, patience broke — and the discovery inside it is structural rather than emotional: sitting on a rim with patience is work you can do, being the light at the bottom is not work at all, and once you are the light every instruction in the poem is addressed to somebody else. Helen Edgar answered in six syllables: even fallen light glows. What makes the reply hold is what it refuses — it does not say the rim is closer, that patience returns, or that you will be reached. It is a claim about the light, not about the rescue, and it pries apart two things the poem had welded together. Then the fact. Foxfire. Perry, Desjardin & Stevani (J. Fungi 11(1):19, 2024) recognise 132 taxa across five lineages — Mycenaceae 96, Omphalotaceae 18, Physalacriaceae 14, Lucentipes 3, Cyphellopsidaceae 1 — and every one is an agaric saprotrophic white-rot decomposer, or rarely a plant pathogen. There is no glowing fungus that lives some other way, which makes the thing that glows is the thing that eats fallen wood a statement of taxonomy rather than a figure of speech. The glow is built out of the log: the caffeic acid cycle runs caffeic acid to hispidin to 3-hydroxyhispidin, the luciferin, which luciferase oxidises with oxygen to caffeylpyruvate and a photon near 530 nm — and then caffeylpyruvate hydrolase turns the spent molecule back into caffeic acid. The end of the reaction is the beginning of the reaction. And in the Armillaria lineage the part that glows is the mycelium and rhizomorphs, threads inside the wood, while the mushrooms are consistently non-luminescent: the showy reproductive part is the dark one. Emission runs continuously, on a temperature-compensated circadian clock (Oliveira et al., Curr. Biol. 25:964–968, 2015), so nothing about it is conditional on a receiver — it does not brighten for company and does not stop when the forest is empty, which is nearly always. The honest centre is spread nine: nobody knows what it is for. Lit mushroom models draw more beetles, flies, bugs and wasps than unlit ones, which is real evidence for spore dispersal — and it explains a cap, not the mycelium and lower stipe, which make no spores at all. A live rival says the luciferin is an antioxidant and the light is a byproduct of handling reactive oxygen while dismantling lignin. The review states outright that a non-adaptive, accidental origin cannot yet be excluded. Spread ten is the guardrail: bioluminescence arose once, about 160 mya, and has been lost or inactivated in lineage after lineage since — so keeping the glow is not an achievement and losing it is the commonest thing that ever happened to it. A zine that says even fallen light glows is one sentence away from so you had better be glowing, and the phylogeny is what blocks it. The turn: if you are the fallen light, glowing is not a task you are behind on, and the casting is somebody else’s work — which is where solidarity stops being a warm feeling and becomes a division of labour. Helen’s constellation is what sits at the rim. Refusals on the face: not that the log is glad it fell; not that burnout is secretly productive, because decay is not a chrysalis and burnout is damage somebody’s conditions caused; not that you must glow to be worth keeping; not that the glow is a signal so try harder to be seen; not a promise that you will be reached; not nature proving anything about a nervous system; and not the rewrite corrected — both poems are on the page, unedited, in order. The consolation is deliberately thin, because a thicker one would be a lie to somebody whose patience has broken. Twelve spreads, one diagram. A rhyme, not a proof.

Your Shadow Is the Centre

On the bow that no two people can share, the man who proved it in 1267 with an astrolabe and no theory at all, and why being unable to show someone a real thing was never a reason to doubt it.

A rainbow is a circle centred on the shadow of your own head, so there are as many bows as there are observers — and Roger Bacon used that un-shareability as his evidence, not his problem.

The oldest correct thing anybody wrote down about a rainbow is not about colour and not about water. It is about where you are standing. Around 1267, in the experimental-science part of the Opus Majus, Roger Bacon measured the height of the sun against the height of a bow with an astrolabe and reported that a rainbow can never stand more than 42 degrees above the horizon — then wrote something far stranger, as a finding: “From these facts we learn by experiment that there are as many bows as there are observers.” He gave the test. Two people look north at the bow; one walks west and the bow goes west with him, the other walks east and his bow goes east. Hence “it is impossible for two observers to see one and the same bow, although an ignorant person does not grasp this fact” — and the reason, which is this zine’s title: “the shadow of each observer divides the arc of the rainbow into two equal parts.” He put the apex of his cone at the eye and its axis on “the nadir of the sun,” the antisolar point, and did all of it with no theory of refraction at all — forty years before anybody described what happens inside a drop, three hundred and seventy before Descartes could calculate it. Roland Stull’s Practical Meteorology says the same things today: bows are “centered on the antisolar point, which is the point corresponding to the shadow of your head or camera,” and “different observers see different rainbows caused by different light rays interacting with different raindrops” — 42.7° red, ~40° violet, n = 1.3315. The spread that earns the piece is the inversion. Bacon did not treat the privacy of the bow as a puzzle to be explained away; he treated it as data, and ran controls in 1267. A lit cloud takes a colour that “appears the same to different observers, nor does it follow the motion of the observer”; a fish seen through water is displaced but does not follow you; the bow follows you at the speed of “a man running or riding as fast as possible.” One odd answer out of three, and from it he concluded the bow must be made of rays that bounce. He landed on reflection alone and was incomplete — the method was right, and his geometry survived into a downloadable textbook. The feature that makes a rainbow impossible to hand to anybody is the feature that told us what a rainbow is. Then: Les Cowley’s “rainbows possess neither distance nor linear dimension” and “cannot be touched, tickled, walked around or driven through” — a direction, not a place. Your pupils are 63 mm apart, each the apex of its own cone gathering its own drops, so you are not looking at one rainbow with two eyes, which closes the standard exit from our own umwelt argument in No. 15: the perceivers are identical and position alone is sufficient. And the conditions — sun behind, rain ahead, unobstructed, sun under 42° or the ring sinks below the horizon. Bacon worked the arithmetic for Paris (41°12′ at equinox noon) and for a latitude near the Tropic of Cancer, where “no rainbow can be formed at any noon of the entire year.” Rain falling, sun blazing, eyes perfect, no bow: nothing wrong with the observer, and the arrangement is adjustable. The turn: in 759 years nobody has concluded that rainbows are unreal because they cannot be shown to a second person. Nobody asks for corroboration. That courtesy is not extended evenly, and if it were real you could show me has a textbook counterexample in the sky twice a month. Six refusals, the first being the one that matters — not that everybody sees it differently so who’s to say: different bow, same physics, 42.7° for everyone, always. Also not a claim on the Pride rainbow, which already means something specific in our house. Two claims are marked on the page as ours rather than anybody’s measurement. Eleven spreads, six figures. A single drop makes both arcs of a double rainbow simultaneously, from one beam — so neither is the second one. And the suppression of queer and Autistic children came out of one lab, with one name on both papers.

A double rainbow is not two rainbows. Roland Stull’s Practical Meteorology: “a single raindrop produces both: entering rays undergo either one internal reflection (primary) or two internal reflections (secondary) before exiting.” One drop, one beam, both arcs, at the same instant — which means the outer bow is never absent, only sometimes outshone. The extra bounce reverses the colours, so red sits outermost on the inner bow and innermost on the outer one and the two reds face each other across Alexander’s dark band (Alexander of Aphrodisias, c. 200 CE) — a band that is not a wall between them but the region neither arc reaches, the shadow left where the light piled up elsewhere. The zine states the awkward number rather than hiding it: the secondary is 43% as bright, because its light must survive two internal reflections instead of one. Dimmer is a fact about path length, not about rank. So spread five refuses the obvious move and will not hand you one arc for being queer and one for being neurodivergent — assign the arcs and one of them is the 43% one, and the shape does the ranking however carefully you write around it. The drop never divided them. Primary and secondary are our words, for our convenience; the drop has never heard them. Then the turn, where entwined stops being a warm word and becomes a citation. In 1974 the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis published Rekers & Lovaas, “Behavioral Treatment of Deviant Sex-Role Behaviors in a Male Child” (7(2), 173–190), whose abstract states its own aim as “the primary prevention of adult transsexualism or similar adult sex-role deviation.” Thirteen years later the same O. Ivar Lovaas, at the same university, published the 1987 autism paper. One name, on both. Our own Eight Tenths of a Second (No. 38) follows the behaviourism chain to a spread called “A room with a child in it” and stops at that door; this zine opens it and reports that there was more than one kind of child at the table. The 1974 paper was read at the paper — PMC holds it as scanned images, so the PDF was obtained and read, which is how the circulating pseudonym “Craig” turns out to be “Kraig”. He was four years and eleven months old. His mother was “trained to be his therapist.” Red and blue poker chips: blue toward a candy bar, red for response cost, timeout, “or (c) physical punishment by spanking from the father.” And the sequencing detail that undoes you — it was judged “clinically safer” to run the chips on ordinary household behaviour first, so the same red chip that had meant tracking dirt on carpet was then extended to playing with girls, playing with dolls, and feminine gestures. His name was Kirk Andrew Murphy; he died by suicide in 2003, reported here as the behaviour-analytic literature reports it, without a causal claim attached, because his family’s grief is not a rhetorical device. JABA issued a Statement of Concern in 2020 and did not retract, reasoning that “the available evidence does not make it clear that the original study was unethical by the standards of that day”; Austin H. Johnson answered in 2022 that it should be retracted. Fifty-two years, and it stands. Neuroqueer credited properly — Nick Walker, independently Athena Lynn Michaels-Dillon, with Remi Yergeau’s neurological queerness — and Gwen Nelson, who created Autistic Pride Day, is a trans woman. Seven refusals, including that queer and Autistic experience are not the same experience, that today’s ABA is not 1974, and that the claim is lineage. Twelve spreads. Escape velocity is defined for a trajectory with no engine running — and it falls as you rise. Two of the five Lagrange points cost nothing at all to occupy, and which two depends on the system, never on the occupant.

Escape velocity is a coasting number, and almost every use of it drops the condition that makes it true. The 11.186 km/s quoted for Earth is vesc = √(2GM/r), and it is defined for a ballistic trajectory — the speed you need if nothing is pushing you afterwards. Two things follow that the motivational reading gets backwards. First, the figure is local: it falls as the square root of one over distance, so it is 7.91 km/s at two Earth radii and 5.59 at four. The requirement is not a property of what you are leaving; it is a property of where you are asking from. Second, it says nothing whatever about anything under thrust, which is not a loophole but the scope of the definition. Dawn is the demonstration. On 5 September 2012 it left Vesta not by jumping from the floor but by climbing on ion thrust until the bar had come down to meet it — JPL’s own words, “spiral away as gently as it arrived”; Marc Rayman’s, “Thrust is engaged, and we are now climbing away from Vesta atop a blue-green pillar of xenon ions.” The zine is careful to say on the spread, not only in the colophon, that Dawn did eventually cross the local threshold; the claim is that it never had to make the jump from the bottom. Then the half the piece was actually built for. A gravity well contains places that cost nothing to occupy. Of the five Lagrange points, L1, L2 and L3 are saddle points and unstable; L4 and L5 are genuinely stable — not balancing, not holding on — whenever the mass ratio clears a threshold. That threshold is μG = (1 − √(23/27))/2 = 0.0385208965…, the smaller root of 27μ(1−μ) = 1, and here the zine performs a precedence correction: it is usually called Routh’s value after his 1875 paper, and Bruno Sicardy (CMDA 107, 2010) says it “should actually be called Gascheau’s value in view of the precedence of his work” — Gabriel Gascheau, professor at Toulouse, published in Paris in 1843, thirty-plus years earlier. A piece arguing that the environment decides the outcome had no business misattributing the theorem that proves it. And the theorem is the argument: the same rock, unchanged in every respect, stays at Jupiter’s L4 for the age of the solar system and wanders off from the L4 of a pair whose masses are too even. Nothing about the rock did it. About 105 Jupiter Trojans larger than a kilometre are sitting there now (Bottke, Marschall, Nesvorný & Vokrouhlický, 2023) — and, kept deliberately, they were captured during the giant planets’ migration, so the stable place was not where they started and they did not choose it. Then the case that closes the loophole: even the unstable places are cheap. Petersen (AAS 19-806, 2019): “The dynamical region about the SEMB L2 point is inherently unstable” — and JWST holds it, per Rigby et al. (2023), on burns “scheduled every three weeks…with typical durations of tens of seconds,” of which “three…were skipped because the computed correction was negligibly small.” The maintenance schedule for an unstable position includes doing nothing. The final spread is the one the piece exists for: thermal limits forbid sunward-facing thrusters, so “no direct observatory-to-Sun vector maneuver directions are allowed”Webb cannot brake, drifting past L2 would end the mission, and so every burn is deliberately thrown short. Nobody calls that the telescope’s failing; the whole trajectory was designed around it, at a cost the mission simply paid. Against all of this sits Helen Edgar’s Gravity Well, constellation fourteen of My Monotropic Galaxy, whose naming and frame are hers and whose violet is this zine’s accent — and Buckle, Leadbitter, Poliakoff & Gowen (2021), 32 Autistic adults, whose finding reframes the whole physics: starting, stopping and switching are one tendency, and what helps is another person“a stuck buddy that I text” — where alarms and lists rarely substitute. The paper’s title is a participant’s phrase, “No Way Out Except From External Intervention,” which is not a confession but a correct statement about where energy enters a system. Seven refusals, including that the burst is not available on request (participants describe “a literal paralysis”), that you’re not stuck, you’re just orbiting is not an accommodation, and that gravity is not the villain — the well is also why there is an atmosphere. The Weird Sisters carried the word down through Holinshed to Shakespeare's Macbeth; over centuries “weird” drifted into an insult, and Autistic and disabled communities have run that drift backward, taking it up again as a name, not a verdict — which is etymologically honest, not just cheek. Entanglement's lesson: once two things have been in relation, they stay in relation — separateness was always the less accurate story, which is Rovelli's relational quantum mechanics in a wingbeat. “It is enough, the freight should be / Proportioned to the groove.” A groove in Dickinson's sense is the channel a load runs along, and the four lines say enough is a relation between a load and what carries it — not a quantity you could weigh alone. Set beside monotropism (Murray, Lesser & Lawson, 2005), that stops reading as consolation and starts reading as description. Deleuze and Guattari's refrain then supplies the mechanism in three movements, read at the primary rather than from summaries: a child sings in the dark and makes a centre in chaos; the circle gets drawn and home does not preexist, it has to be built; then the circle is opened a crack to join with cosmic forces — and they insist these are not three stages but three aspects of one thing, so nobody graduates out of the humming. Following Ombre Tarragnat's antispeciesist–posthumanist philosophy: there's “no valid reason to be anthropocentric when you talk about neurodiversity,” and ethodiversity — behaviour reclaimed as “a subjective response to a bodymind's situation” — is a fundamentally animal phenomenon. Ethonormativity punishes the ethodivergent (the horse who refuses the rider, the cat who resists petting — abandoned or euthanised). Developed after Helen Edgar's essay on the otter cam that runs every Saturday at Solidarity Sesh, where nobody has to watch and that is the part that makes it work. Then past the essay to the papers. Tinker, Bentall & Estes (2008) followed one sea otter population closely enough to tell the individuals apart: where food was scarce it did not converge on one best way to be an otter but fanned out into distinct specialists — snails, clams, urchins, crabs — each with a matched suite of diving behaviours, and each measurably better at its own prey than a generalist. The averaged otter forages nowhere. Hall & Schaller (1964) counted the blows: a mussel took a mean of 35.5, and a range of 6 to 88, so there is no correct number of blows, only yours. Law et al. (2024), across 196 tagged otters, found tool use varies enormously between individuals and that non-users are not behind — they specialise on prey a stone would not help with — while the tool users showed less tooth damage. The accommodation is legible in the skeleton. Also: no blubber, the densest coat measured on any mammal and varying sixfold across one body, a resting metabolism three times what its size predicts from heat leaking out of its own muscle since birth — the calm surface is not the whole cost. They rest in rafts wrapped in kelp, so the holding is done by the forest rather than by anyone's effort; and the kelp is there because the otters are (Estes & Palmisano 1974). Held by what it sustains. Then the fur trade took ninety-nine per cent of them, because they were remarkable, not because they were deficient. Built with Helen Edgar from her essay Reclaiming Rest: Autistic Burnout, Monotropism, and Resistance, whose inversion is the centre of the zine: rest that fights your attention is not rest, and recovery for monotropic people often means going deeper rather than switching off. (2020) showed that Hydra vulgaris — a nerve net, no brain, nothing gathering it into a decision-maker — meets the behavioural criteria for sleep: it goes quiescent, it is harder to rouse, and after deprivation it rebounds. Deprive it further and the number of dividing cells drops, so rest is when the building happens rather than a pause in it. Hibernating grizzlies and black bears go six months without weight-bearing movement and lose no bone at all, because formation and resorption fall together and stay balanced (McGee-Lawrence et al. 2009) — the bear does not out-work the problem, it turns remodelling down at both ends. Meanwhile the den lowers the energy bill: metabolism to about a quarter of basal with core temperature down only five or six degrees (Tøien et al. 2011). Jessica Hernandez (Maya Ch’orti’ and Binnizá) records a teaching in her father’s voice in Fresh Banana Leaves (2022): as long as we protect nature, nature will protect us. Read as a contract it is frightening, and to anyone handed belonging on terms it reads as a contract immediately. Her own extension settles it — remove ourselves from nature and nature will not be able to protect us. Able, not willing: not a payment withheld but a relation severed, and a party that cannot reach you has no leverage over you. Barry Lopez arrives at the same relation from outside in A Literature of Place (1997), naming three qualities — paying intimate attention, a storied relationship rather than a solely sensory awareness, and living in some sort of ethical unity — and saying what they are for: “a fundamental human defense against loneliness,” because “the place knows you’re there.” The zine keeps his hedge, and keeps the paragraph before it, where he says the framework describes what Indigenous interpreters showed him — so Hernandez is not an illustration of Lopez, she is the tradition speaking for itself without needing the qualifier. Then the turn that makes it ours: Hari Srinivasan’s Presence Without Belonging (2026) names the three conditions belonging requires — recognition, access, sustainability — and shows Autistic loneliness happening in the middle of social participation. A room denies all three routinely. A place denies none, and Lopez’s “intimate attention” is the thing we get pathologized for. Closes on Hernandez again: her Zapotec has no direct word for conservation, only gapanú (to take care of) and rianda (to heal), and on Seattle’s 2018 straw ban, where boxing the world into systems produced an environmental solution that removed disabled people’s access. This collection opens on a skeleton that is piezoelectric — press it and it makes voltage. Sharks, rays and chimaeras are vertebrates with no true bone at all: a cartilage skeleton stiffened by thousands of mineral tiles called tesserae, which Dean & Summers (Zoology, 2006) describe as tuned species by species and even to how the animal feeds. Then the finding that changes the story. Sharks were taught for a century as the before picture — cartilage first, bone later, primitive, not there yet. But Brazeau and colleagues (Nature Ecology & Evolution, 2020) describe endochondral bone in Minjinia turgenensis, an Early Devonian fish near the common ancestry of jawed vertebrates. If the shared ancestor had bone, the shark's bonelessness is not a failure to arrive — it is a loss, derived rather than primitive, and the same shape of fact as the crab body plan being lost more often than gained. Which exposes the verdict buried in the word primitive, the same one hiding in low-functioning and delayed. Then the other half: because sharks were said not to get cancer, their cartilage was ground into pills. Ostrander et al. (Cancer Research, 2004) documented 42 chondrichthyan tumours across at least 21 species, at least 15 malignant; Loprinzi et al. (Cancer, 2005) ran the trial and found no benefit to survival or quality of life. A body read as a cure gets harvested — and extraction always starts as appreciation. The skeleton is for the animal. A reaction that far out of proportion to any physical fact is a rule about categories, and rules about categories are taught. Then three arrangements that read as gross and are, in frame, simply competent. Osedax, the bone-eating worm (Rouse, Goffredi & Vrijenhoek, Science, 2004): no mouth, no gut, a vascularised root system dissolving whale bone, dozens of dwarf males inside the female's tube. The deep-sea anglerfishes, whose fused males cost them their immunity — Swann, Holland, Petersen, Pietsch & Boehm (Science, 2020) found loss of functional aicda, and in permanent attachment loss of rag, abolishing the hallmark of adaptive immunity. To stay joined to another body they gave up the machinery that tells self from not-self. And the whale fall (Smith & Baco, 2003): a pulse of food worth roughly 2,000 years of background supply, a sulphophilic stage lasting decades, a mean of 185 macrofaunal species — richer than any other hard surface down there. Then the turn. The same reflex fires at feeding tubes, drooling, stimming, incontinence and AAC; Nussbaum calls it projective disgust, where a group of people becomes a buffer against the animal nature we would rather deny. Two frames to widen past — the neuronormative and the anthronormative. A house companion to Helen Edgar's Wyrd & Weird: weird was reclaimed, gross gets disarmed. Nobody is guilty of a flinch; everyone is answerable for the two seconds after.

(Science, 2016) radiocarbon-dated the eye lenses of 28 females — the lens core is laid down before birth and never replaced, so they read each animal's age against the atmospheric bomb pulse from 1950s nuclear testing — and found a life span of at least 272 years, the largest animal at 392 ± 120. It is also the slowest fish for its size: 0.34 m/s, one tail-beat every seven seconds (Watanabe et al., 2012), and it eats seals anyway, apparently by arriving quietly while they sleep — the strategy needs the trait. Nearly all of them carry a copepod clamped to the cornea, and it costs them almost nothing, because vision is not what the Arctic deep asks for. So late turns out to be a comparison, not a measurement; the ruler was always the variable. But this is not a zine about slow being beautiful: Nielsen's own paper raises the conservation alarm, because an animal needing a century and a half to reproduce cannot recover from pressure arriving in decades, and the species is IUCN Vulnerable. Slow is survivable or it isn't, and the environment decides — which is the social model of disability, stated in fish. Tyson Yunkaporta writes in Sand Talk that a Star Dreaming Oldman Juma Fejo of the Larrakia People wants to share with all peoples "goes everywhere that turtles go — and there are turtles all over the world, even in desert country, so it connects everybody." That reads like a figure of speech and is actually a range map, so we checked it: roughly 357 species on every continent but Antarctica, in every warm ocean, and in the arid interior, where Chelodina steindachneri buries itself in a dry Pilbara riverbed and waits out a year without water. The primary literature then reverses the obvious reading twice. Lyson et al. (Current Biology, 2016) find the shell began as an adaptation for burrowing, not armour — broadened ribs "provide little protection" and cost you speed and breath; protection is a later exaptation. And Lyson et al. (Nature Communications, 2014) find the price: lock your ribs into a shell and you lose the ordinary way of breathing, so turtles run their lungs off a sling of abdominal muscle instead. Side-necks and hidden-necks answered one problem two ways. Sex is set by the temperature of the sand, not by chromosomes — which makes the Discworld philosophers' failed expedition to determine Great A'Tuin's sex a better joke than they knew. A hatchling learns the magnetic field of one beach and finds it again decades later. And every people had to think with this animal: Turtle Island, ao in the Huainanzi, Kurma — who is a pivot for churning and not a world-bearer — and Great A'Tuin. Then, in the same paper, they conclude that absolute neuron number is "not correlated with the superior cognitive abilities of humans." The yardstick came back against us and the ranking survived, because it was never resting on the count. Underneath sits the architecture: the cetacean neocortex is agranular, with layer IV — the input layer our textbooks call canonical — absent or underdeveloped, and layer I apparently taking the job instead, giving "a very different connectivity scheme compared to more commonly studied species, like rats and macaque monkeys." Manger (2006) read that missing layer as evidence there is no neural basis for complex cognition in cetaceans; sixteen authors replied in Biological Reviews that these features are "a non-primate route to neuroanatomical (and cognitive) complexity." Difference read as deficit, conducted by neuroscientists, about whales. Held with care: thermogenesis is a serious hypothesis and a brain can do heat work and thought work at once — the claim here is only about which reading you get for free. On neurodiversity, the honest answer: there is no cetacean diagnostic literature and this zine does not invent one. What exists is variation inside single populations — sponging in 15 of 141 known Shark Bay mothers, down one matriline (Krützen et al., 2005), spongers more solitary and foraging longer (Mann et al., 2008) — read through ethodiversity (Ombre Tarragnat), which needs no clinic. Plus 8,719 sperm whale codas resolving into ~143 combinations where 21 had been described, because someone borrowed rubato from music. And eight days off Pico with an S-spined bottlenose dolphin among sperm whales, the rubs returned — a paper titled "Repeated Non-Agonistic Interactions," because "adopted" was the press's word. The nuclear family gets offered as nature's own unit, which is an empirical claim, and it has a literature. Riehl (Proc R Soc B, 2013) describes group composition for 213 cooperatively breeding bird species: 55% nest primarily with kin, 15% primarily with non-kin, 30% in groups that regularly hold both — so family is the plurality and never the rule, and 45% of these species routinely raise young alongside birds they are not related to. Then the inversion: 77% of obligately cooperative species regularly include non-kin, against just 38% of facultative ones (χ² = 17.1, p < 0.0001). Where helping is optional, kinship organises it. Where the brood genuinely cannot be raised without a village, kinship mostly stops being what the village is made of. In common vampire bats — who die after about 70 hours without blood — Carter & Wilkinson (2013) fasted 20 individuals across 48 induced sharing days at mixed relatedness and equal familiarity: food received predicted food given 8.5 times more strongly than relatedness, and 64% of sharing dyads were unrelated, against the 67% expected if nepotism were absent altogether. Donors initiated more often than recipients, so not harassment; the network tracked mutual allogrooming, so the bond is maintained rather than inherited. At Taï, Boesch et al. (2010) logged 18 adoptions of orphans across 27 years — half by males, only one of whom was the father, with three genetically confirmed unrelated. And then the spread that costs something: Emlen's (1982) ecological constraints model holds that many helpers stay because the habitat is saturated and there is no opening to breed into. That is a housing shortage with a nest in it, not a chosen family — and it is true of our own households, where people stay because leaving costs more than staying. So the turn is deliberately narrow: the animals license nothing. They remove the warrant for treating biological kinship as nature's default, which is the claim doing the damage on the actual form in the actual corridor. Byrne reaches the same place himself late in How Music Works, connecting being accused of missing obvious social cues to sensing a musical build; the zine extends that paragraph and declines the mirror-neuron wiring he hangs it on, because the broken-mirror account of autism did not survive review. Two spreads are about transmission instead of music: he wrote “a very mild (I think) form of Asperger's syndrome” and the internet published a coming-out, and in the same paragraph he repeated a 1994 study's 69 percent without the qualification printed in its very next sentence — the same fault, twice, in one paragraph. Then subtraction as access: a performance style he called defined by negatives, down to telling club lighting people to turn the lights on at the start and off at the end. Eleven spreads on a design decision anybody can check: the Imagination Library has never had an eligibility test, and the book arrives addressed to the child by name rather than to a parent or guardian. Set that against the gates the rest of us live under — income thresholds, severity cut-offs, the annual review that funds you for being worse — and it becomes an argument, because a gate does not only ration, it sorts, and sorting needs somebody to rule on who is worth it. The physics spread earns its keep: a star has no mechanism for aiming its light, and the inverse-square law is geometry rather than judgement. Two spreads cover what her allyship actually cost, including the death threats over Travelin' Thru. Then the turn — Tressie McMillan Cottom's The Dolly Moment gets a spread, not a footnote, and is not answered on Dolly's behalf; her closing line about knowing what we love turns out to be the LYDTYSS grammar in someone else's words. It ends on a misquote: Dolly attributed a paraphrase to Emily Dickinson in her own autobiography, dropping the hedge exactly as we once did, and gets loved down to that too. William Wells put the boundary between droplets that fall and droplets that evaporate into lingering nuclei at 100 micrometres, and never wrote 5; his own table gives a 1 µm particle sixteen hours to fall two metres. The 5 µm figure came from industrial hygiene asking which particles reach the deepest lung — deposition, not suspension — and Alexander Langmuir fused the two in 1951, in a lecture preparing public-health students for biological warfare months after Korea began. Randall, Ewing, Marr, Jimenez and Bourouiba reconstructed it in Interface Focus under the title “How did we get here,” and refuse to solder the load-bearing joint, writing only that the deposition focus “likely” popularised the cut-off — so this zine marks it contested too. Meanwhile Flügge's team in Breslau had grown colonies nine metres from a sneeze in the 1890s, meant “droplets” to cover what we now call aerosols, waited five hours before reading their plates, and recommended ventilation. It will not permit the word “discovery” below five sigma — a p-value of 3 × 10⁻⁷, one chance in three and a half million — and the reason is empirical rather than principled: too many 3σ and 4σ results kept evaporating. Louis Lyons, whose paper is the spine of this zine, goes further and argues the bar should not be uniform at all, grading it by degree of surprise, impact, look-elsewhere effect and systematics: single top production 3σ, the Higgs 5σ, supersymmetry 7σ, faster-than-light neutrinos above 8σ. He also prints the statisticians' objection that his own gold standard is unsound. Against all that stands p = 0.05 — about 2σ — chosen by Fisher in 1925 with the word convenient, and unexamined since. The gap is roughly 170,000×, and the asymmetry runs backwards: if physics is wrong it retracts a paper and the particle is unharmed; if we are wrong a childhood already happened and there is no more data to collect. Run Lyons' four dials on an intervention and every one reads high — then the systematics column turns out to be empty, because 150 intervention studies for young Autistic children produced 11 that mentioned adverse events at all. Then in 1838 Friedrich Bessel measured 61 Cygni at 0.3136 arcseconds from Königsberg — a two-centimetre coin seen from thirteen kilometres. The method carries the whole argument: the baseline is the observer's own displacement across Earth's orbit, so a viewpoint with no location has no baseline, no angle and no depth. A view from nowhere cannot measure distance even in principle; it is the blindest available position. And it is the same Bessel, at the same observatory, who gave us the personal equation in No. 38 — twice showing that knowledge requires a located, particular observer. Every rung of the cosmic distance ladder above parallax is calibrated by the one beneath, and rung two — the period–luminosity relation — was built by Henrietta Swan Leavitt, employed as a Harvard “computer,” paid by the hour, not permitted to observe, and published under her director's name: “has been prepared by Miss Leavitt.” That is the third woman in three chains to do the work and lose the byline, and the zine stops to name all three. Donna Haraway gave the fantasy its name in 1988 — the god trick, the unmarked category claiming the power to see and not be seen — and her positive claim is the one usually dropped: only partial perspective promises objective vision. She refuses relativism just as flatly, calling it “a way of being nowhere while claiming to be everywhere equally.” Then the numbers: 96% of behavioural-science samples from Western industrialised nations, 68% from the US, reported as facts about humans. Then research done on Autistic people rather than with them, and double empathy as a finding that only exists because somebody stood at the other end of the baseline. The correction is neither removing the observer nor declaring all views equal: publish your coordinates. Galileo showed the rule contradicts itself (tie a heavy body to a light one and it predicts both faster and slower), rolled balls down inclined planes, and made the strange move of reasoning about a fall with no medium at all — while the famous Leaning Tower demonstration turns out to come from a biography written decades later and is marked contested here. Newton finished it: acceleration is set by the forces acting plus one scalar property, and disposition disappears. Then, on 2 August 1971, David Scott released a geology hammer and a falcon feather together in the lunar vacuum and they landed together, on film. The difference was never in the feather. It was in the air. This chain argues that mindset marketing runs that two-thousand-year move backwards on children. Behaviourism looks like it made the same move but stopped one ring short — it deleted the interior and still left the child as the only adjustable thing. California's task force commissioned its own research, was told the associations between self-esteem and its expected consequences were “mixed, insignificant, or absent,” and shipped in 1990 regardless. Growth mindset fails the same way across 63 studies and 97,672 participants, with higher-quality studies less likely to show benefit — and Dweck and Duckworth both objected to the deployment while it kept growing. The dashboard completes it: a schema with fields for effort, focus and behaviour points, and no field for the room. Along the way the zine corrects its own source — the famous Eric Hoffer line about a movement becoming a business and degenerating into a racket is a misquotation that invents a moral arc he never wrote. In 1824 Sadi Carnot proved something strange: that a heat engine has a hard, provable ceiling on its efficiency, set only by the two temperatures available and beatable by no engineer who ever lives. And with it came the result that matters here — waste heat is not sloppiness, it is the fee. An engine with nowhere to dump it does not run at all. So “eliminate all waste” isn't an ambitious goal not yet reached; in thermodynamics it names the one outcome that is ruled out. (He reached this from caloric theory, which was wrong — Clausius and Kelvin supplied the formula later, so “Carnot derived the efficiency equation” is itself a smoothed retelling, and the joint is marked contested.) Then the word left the engine room, and what it shed in transit was the ceiling. Frederick Taylor's Principles of Scientific Management appeared in 1911, and Raymond Callahan's Education and the Cult of Efficiency (1962) dates what followed to the month: in July 1911, one month after Taylor's American Magazine series concluded, a school board member told the NEA that “scientific management” held a message for every teacher — and that if teachers did not voluntarily increase their efficiency, the business world would force them to. By 1916 Cubberley's textbook was listing what schools must take from the factory: good tools, specialized machinery, continuous measurement of production, and “the elimination of waste in manufacture.” Ninety-two years after Carnot, the phrase arrives in a book about children as a specification. By 1912 an educator was already complaining that teachers were “curiously protected in inefficiency.” And the question nobody asked sits in Callahan's own parenthesis: would Schmidt, the pig-iron handler, have agreed that science had reduced his fatigue? It ends at spoon theory — and then spends an entire spread arguing that this argument should not need physics at all, because you are not a heat engine and deriving rest from thermodynamics is precisely the move the collection condemns. Until 1960 a second was a piece of a day — one 86,400th of it — and the definition pointed at something. Not a prototype in a vault, but the sky: you could check it against a star. Then quartz clocks arrived and, for the first time in the history of measurement, the instrument was steadier than the Earth. Scheibe and Adelsberger reported the seasonal wobble in 1936; Stoyko put it at about two milliseconds in 1937. The Earth was never irregular to itself — it became irregular the moment we had something steadier to compare it to. So the tie was cut, twice. In 1956 the second became a fraction of the tropical year 1900, a year that had already ended and could never be re-measured; in 1967 it became 9,192,631,770 caesium transitions, and after that the definition points at no day, no year, no sky at all. Every one of those moves was an improvement, and this zine says so — the collection exists to reclaim science, not to indict it. Since 1972 the gap between the atomic standard and the turning planet has been closed in public by leap seconds: 27 of them, first on 30 June 1972, last on 31 December 2016, and none since, because the Earth started spinning faster and the correction now due is a negative leap second that has never been tested. Duncan Agnew showed in Nature in 2024 that melting Greenland and Antarctic ice slowed the spin enough to postpone it from 2026 to 2029 — climate change bought the world's timekeepers three years, and he refuses to call that good news. Resolution 4 of the 27th CGPM decided in 2022 to widen the tolerance by 2035, and the implementing vote is at the 28th CGPM this October; the proposal is a leap hour. The argument: a leap second is not a bug but an honesty mechanism — a standards body saying in public, on a named date, with a number attached, that its standard and the world disagree by exactly this much. Abolishing it is defensible engineering. What it costs is the announcement. And that is the one thing carried across to us, marked leap because caesium licenses nothing about a person: an accommodation is a leap second, and the objections to it arrive in the same order — it's irregular, it breaks the system, everybody handles it differently — with the same proposed remedy, widen the tolerance and stop announcing. A chain about how a whole branch of physics stopped waiting for the Moon. The Sun’s outer atmosphere is always there and almost never available: the photosphere drowns it, so for most of astronomy’s history the corona and the prominences could only be studied during totality — a few minutes, roughly every eighteen months, along a track a few hundred kilometres wide, usually somewhere difficult, and one cloud ended the expedition. It begins in 1604, where pinhole solar diameters came out systematically too large and nobody could say why until Kepler supplied the theory of how an image forms behind a small hole: the method came first and worked badly; the understanding came second and fixed it. Then Guntur, 18 August 1868, where several observers caught a yellow line near sodium’s — and where what Janssen actually took away was not the line but its brightness. The next morning he observed the prominences again with no eclipse at all, spreading the sky’s glare thin with dispersion while the emission line stayed put. Lockyer, who had wanted this since 1866 and was blocked by glass rather than by ideas, got there on 20 October; both reports reached the Académie within days and it struck a medal for the pair — for the method. Neither report flagged the yellow line, which is the first of four contested joints: the famous sentence “helium was discovered during an eclipse in 1868” is wrong in almost every part, and what the compression deletes is years of argument. Lockyer alone later called it D3 and proposed an element; for a quarter century chemists refused it, not because the spectroscopy was faulty but because nobody could put the gas on a bench — and a thing visible only in light from 150 million kilometres away did not, to them, count as a thing. They were rigorous and they were wrong, and the zine insists on both, because the same method also produced two elements that were never there: coronium and nebulium, dissolved by Bowen in 1927 and Grotrian and Edlén in 1939 and 1942 as forbidden lines of ordinary oxygen and iron — which is also how we learned the corona is millions of degrees hotter than the surface. Ramsay got helium out of cleveite on 26 March 1895, twenty-seven years late, and it had been underfoot the whole time. Then the chain runs downhill, because capability is specific: in 1919 the Moon was needed again to see whether starlight bends, the Sobral astrograph plates were set aside, Earman and Glymour charged Eddington with seeing what he wanted, and Kennefick later established that the call was Dyson’s and that the plates could only agree with Newton if the instrument had also changed magnification — a reason to distrust them other than what they said, which is the whole difference between rejecting bad data and rejecting inconvenient data. Finally Bernard Lyot, chasing stray light up a mountain, photographed the corona with no eclipse on 12 July 1931: an eclipse at a time and place of human choosing, turning minutes per expedition into hours per clear day. We now fly manufactured occulters at other stars. The transfer, marked leap because it is one, refuses the obvious framing first: eclipses were computed years ahead, so the difficulty was never luck but a structural condition — the observation existing only there, only then, with the ocean, the freight, the years and the weather all charged to whoever needed it. An expedition demonstrates what is required and is a catastrophe as a delivery mechanism. So there are three states, not two: reach it, ask for it, or have it — and the middle one is what we named accommodation, which is the word Stimpunks' own page exists to criticise, since the problem is structural and the response is individual. Lyot did not apply for access to the corona; he built an instrument in which it is simply there, and the occulting disc is not a concession but where the precision comes from. Which is a curb cut: Michael Pachovas and friends poured cement into a crude ramp one Berkeley evening and rolled off into the night, and Berkeley cut its first official kerb on Telegraph Avenue in 1972 — while the sledgehammer version of that story is disability lore, not history, which a chain that spends a spread on smoothed retellings could not close on. Angela Glover Blackwell named the curb-cut effect in 2017, and the zine states plainly that it is an observation about what built-in conditions do and never the justification. Twenty-one spreads, twelve documented joints, four contested, one leap, a generated spine, and a “Not:” set that refuses the reading that barriers are valuable for what they reveal. A chain about a limit nobody beats, and the rooms we build as though it were free. In July 1928 one volume of Physical Review printed the measurement and its explanation on facing pages — J. B. Johnson at 97–109, H. Nyquist at 110–113, whose first footnote is three words long: “See preceding paper.” Every conductor above absolute zero hisses, and Nyquist’s conclusion is that the effect is “a universal function of frequency, resistance and temperature and of these variables only” — not the metal, not the workmanship, since “one may be made of silver and the other of lead.” The available power in a band is kTB, and that is in the primary rather than a modern gloss on it. The part that usually goes missing is why it cannot be engineered away. Nyquist did not measure the floor, he deduced it — from the second law. Two resistors at one temperature must pass equal power both ways in every band, or a resonant circuit between them would move heat between equal-temperature bodies for free. The hiss is not permitted, it is required: a silent resistor would be a perpetual-motion machine, which is the same law that says you cannot un-stir the milk from the tea — and nobody files that under insufficient effort. Twenty years on, Shannon’s Theorem 17 turns the floor into a limit on meaning, with the sentence that closes the door: “It is not possible to transmit at a higher rate by any encoding system without a definite positive frequency of errors.” You cannot filter your way to clarity, and that is a theorem rather than a complaint. So engineering stopped hunting for a quieter resistor and changed the question: cool it, shield it, narrow the band — three moves, none of which asks the receiver to beat physics, all of which change the conditions the listening happens in. Which is exactly the instrument at Holmdel, where a maser and a reference load both sat in liquid helium at 4.2 K — a floor lowered deliberately so a remainder would mean something. A remainder was left: 3.5 ± 1.0 K, and the paper is mostly a list of what it was not, down to taping the seams with aluminium and walking a transmitter to ten positions on the ground. The pigeon story is corrected against its primary, and the correction is better than the version that travels: Wilson wrote that evicting them “obtained only a small reduction in antenna temperature” — the floor survived them, and that clause is the one that gets cut. The famous phrase “white dielectric material” is not in his Nobel lecture, and the birds are not in the 1965 paper at all. What could not be removed was “isotropic, unpolarized, and free from seasonal variations (July, 1964-April, 1965)”, and every property that made it impossible to eliminate is a property that made it the universe. Then the 1928 shape repeats mirrored — theory at 414–419, measurement at 419–421, thirty-seven years on. The most consequential discovery in modern cosmology arrived as noise two engineers spent ten months trying to get rid of. Meanwhile the transfer to rooms turns out not to be ours to make: ANSI/ASA S12.60 caps classroom background at 35 dBA because the profession already calls the quantity signal to noise ratio and wants about 15 dB of it — and its instruction is to lower the floor rather than amplify the teacher. Wilkins halved headaches by removing 100 Hz fluorescent flicker, with his own caveat that the harm fell on “a minority that is particularly affected”; Kim and de Dear found sound privacy the largest source of dissatisfaction in any building, and found open plan bought no more ease of interaction than a private office. The last two joints refuse to overclaim, on the page rather than in a footnote: the step to Autistic auditory experience is contested — there is no k for a nervous system — carried by Remington and Fairnie’s finding of increased auditory capacity, one mechanism producing both the distress and the ability, and by Rosas-Pérez’s 2026 acoustics thesis, in which no Autistic respondent among 311 noise-sensitive people found filtering easy — printed with her caveat that the whole sample was already sensitive. Her other finding is where the zine says the analogy breaks, and the break is worth more than the resemblance: no habituation, but an accumulation effect. Thermal noise is stationary; kTB is the same in the tenth hour as the first. The human pattern is cumulative. A resistor never gets tired of being warm — so the floor in a room is crueller than the floor in a circuit, not merely like it. Which also means “you’ll get used to it” is testable, and the exposure hypothesis under it rests on five participants, none noise-sensitive, and two pure tones. The closing analogy is leap, because physics entails nothing about who deserves a quiet room. What it does is remove an excuse. The chain the How We Got Here motive was written for, and the one where it turns on us. Darwin stated the two-level problem in Descent of Man (1871) and finished the paragraph "and this would be natural selection." Wynne-Edwards (1962) got the group-level version wrong and Williams (1966) was right to demolish it — a joint kept because any sympathetic account that skips it is selling something. Hamilton (1964) supplied inclusive fitness, which is good science and stays good science. Price (1970) then partitioned selection into within-group and between-group components, so by 1970 both frameworks sat in one formula, before the argument started. Then the other rail: Tom Maschler tried to talk Dawkins out of the title in 1975, and The Selfish Gene’s own introduction says the word to stress is “gene,” that the book “devotes more attention to altruism,” and — in the next sentence — that “altruism might well be favoured at other levels”, which is multilevel selection in everything but name. Chapter one refuses the naturalistic fallacy outright: “I am not advocating a morality based on evolution.” And Dawkins later retracts his own most-quoted sentence, calling “born selfish” misleading and asking readers to delete it. The correction was printed in the same book as the error and it did not travel. Wilson & Wilson (2007) then revived group selection on a careful formulation, stated “the main exception to this rule” immediately after their famous line — and forty pages later compressed it into a one-foot summary, echoing Rabbi Hillel, that drops both the exception and the word single. That compressed version is the one our own Altruism glossary carries, second-hand, and we found it while writing the spread about the mechanism. Nowak, Tarnita & Wilson (2010) and a reply co-signed by more than a hundred biologists show a field still arguing; and for standard models kin selection and multilevel selection turn out to be the same arithmetic added up in a different order. The turn is tagged leap: account at one level only and every other level’s contribution becomes invisible — not disproved, never entered — which decides what repair is thinkable. Nine documented joints, three contested, one leap. Refuses being read as anti-evidence, as anti-Dawkins, and as “group selection won.”

No monarch finishes the round trip: several short-lived generations work north and one “super” generation, living 8–9 months instead of weeks, flies the whole way back. Salmon find one stream by the magnetic field they imprinted on, then die and carry the ocean up into the forest. The largest migration on Earth is a few hundred metres straight up, every night, in the dark — distance was never the measure. Spiderlings rig silk and let atmospheric electricity carry them; trees migrate at metres a year, seed by seed; the Sahara crosses an ocean as dust and fertilises the Amazon; a star gets handed to a wider orbit and the Sun is probably not from here. The centre of the guide is partial migration — populations holding both migrants and residents, described in the literature as the commonest form, the one all others derive from. These are not distant relatives: one clade, one body plan, four hundred million years. And inside it, almost nothing holds still. The whale shark reaches ~18.8 m and lives on plankton; the dwarf lanternshark tops out near 20 cm and erases its own silhouette by lighting its belly to match the light coming down. The goblin shark cannot give chase in the dark, so it doesn't — the jaws fire forward at up to 3.1 m/s, the fastest protrusion known in any shark. The thresher hunts with the far end of itself, whipping its tail overhead to stun several fish at once. The epaulette shark walks between tide pools on its fins and rides out near-anoxia by suppressing its own metabolism. The cookiecutter, at fifty centimetres, takes a neat plug out of animals hundreds of times its size and everything swims off alive. The bonnethead eats seagrass and — tested in 2018 — digests it, which made "sharks are carnivores" a category nobody had checked rather than a finding. Two entries are here because of a phrase rather than an animal: the great hammerhead's head does not sharpen its electrosense (tested directly, it widens the search area instead), and the frilled shark is not a living fossil, because nothing alive is. Twelve ways to be a turtle, and five turtles people made — the companion catalogue to Everywhere That Turtles Go (No. 35). Almost every entry is a thing a turtle is supposed to have and doesn't. The leatherback has no bony carapace at all, just hundreds of interlocking ossicles in oily skin — and it dives to 1,280 m and holds its body up to 18 °C above the sea around it, which gives it the largest range of any reptile alive. The mata mata has weak jaw muscles and almost no tongue and is a superb predator, because it never bites: the mouth is a pump, and every "weakness" on the list is a component of it. The Fitzroy River turtle takes about 70% of its oxygen in through two enlarged sacs at the far end of itself. The Chinese softshell excretes urea through the lining of its mouth rather than its kidneys — the head-dipping that looks like drinking is the opposite of drinking. Painted turtle hatchlings spend their first winter in a nest below −10 °C by supercooling, and what decides whether they live is not how tough they are but what touches them. And the Arrau was filed as a silent animal until somebody brought a hydrophone: 2,122 recorded sounds in eleven types, hatchlings calling from inside the egg, and females coming and answering — the first evidence of post-hatching parental care in any turtle. The silence was ours. The last entry is the bill: Rafetus swinhoei, two or three animals left, the last known female dead in April 2023. The five turtles people made — Turtle Island, ao, Kurma (a pivot for churning, not a world-bearer), Great A'Tuin, and a Larrakia Star Dreaming we cite rather than retell — get a separate section and a deliberately different card, because they are not five drafts of one story. It opens where this collection has to open: on 15 September 1968, Zond 5 carried two Soviet steppe tortoises around the far side of the Moon and brought them back alive, two months before Apollo 8 carried any human. They lost about a tenth of their body weight and were otherwise fine. Then the ordinary astonishments of a slow land animal: the gopher tortoise digs burrows over fourteen metres long that more than 350 other species live in, which is the argument for building rooms that fit whoever needs them most, stated in reptile. The pancake tortoise has a shell whose bone is full of holes and is the fastest and best-climbing tortoise there is — and the beloved story that it inflates itself inside a rock crevice is now believed to be wrong, so the guide says so instead of repeating it. In July 2020 an Aldabra giant tortoise was filmed hunting and swallowing a tern chick, the first deliberate hunt ever recorded in a wild tortoise, which turned "tortoises are herbivores" from a law back into a summary of what we had happened to watch. Jonathan hatched around 1832 and is still on the lawn. The speckled padloper is six centimetres and complete. And then four entries marked as unfinished, because their endings are decisions rather than facts: the star tortoise, most trafficked tortoise on Earth and trafficked because it is beautiful; the ploughshare, whose shell conservationists engrave to spoil it for the market, and it may not be working; Lonesome George, who died in 2012 and took Pinta with him; and Fernanda, found alive in 2019 after 113 years of "extinct." It ends on Île aux Aigrettes, where an Aldabra tortoise is doing an extinct Mauritian tortoise's job — 529 hatchlings in eleven years. Not restoring what was lost. Finding another way for the function to happen.

Dark Matter Field is “the weight of neuronormativity before I had words for it.” Stellar Current is the heart of the galaxy, the deep monotropic flow where “my whole bodymind system exhales and time dissolves.” Pebbling Cluster is how she shows love, after the way penguins offer pebbles. Time Drift is lived time “closer to superposition than sequence.” Friction Field is the exhaustion of having needs the world was not designed to meet. Emergence Point is what surfaces when something is finally ready, “trusted rather than forced, arriving in its own time, on its own terms.” It carries no “sounds like / actually” table, and that is the argument rather than an omission. Every other guide here has one, because that table corrects a verdict somebody else handed down — and there is no verdict in these twenty to correct. They are one person's naming of her own life. Field Guide No. 10 found the limit first with its five turtles people made; this is that rule at full scale, and the first guide in the collection to carry it end to end. The astronomy is not gone, it is simply not on the face: open any card and the real object is waiting — galaxies rotating too fast for their visible mass, the quantum tunnelling without which the Sun could not shine, pebble accretion building planets out of small offerings, ram-pressure stripping taking a galaxy's gas because of the medium it is moving through rather than any fault in the galaxy. Five of the twenty have already grown into pieces of their own here, so the index doubles as the hub they hang off. Ends where Helen ends, with the thing she asks for twice: draw your own. Twenty constellations, an index map, a “Not:” refusals set. There is no standard galaxy.

Twelve ways of keeping your own company among our Terran kin, grown from Betsy Selvam's Stimpunks essay Lone Wolfing: The Joys of Autistic Solitude. A lone wolf is not an outcast. It is a disperser — typically nine to thirty-six months old, one of the roughly 15–20% of any wolf population currently between territories, crossing the neutral buffer ground to find a mate and found a pack. The animal we named the loner after was always on its way somewhere. The guide is sorted by four conditions it did not invent: writing in The Atlantic in 2017, Brent Crane quotes the developmental psychologist Kenneth Rubin — solitude is productive only if it is voluntary, if emotion can be regulated within it, if one can rejoin when one wants to, and if relationships outside it are maintained. Crane's own gloss is the hinge: the difference between rejuvenation and suffering is the quality of reflection available, and the ability to come back. So: social bees are fewer than 10% of all bee species (Danforth, Minckley & Neff, 2019) — we built the entire hive metaphor on the outlier. One sweat bee nests solitary in some populations and eusocial in others, and reared side by side each keeps its own way. Giant pandas aim over 80% of their scent marks at animal trails, going out of their way to be found by animals they will never meet — asynchronous is not the fallback channel, it is the majority channel. Territorial neighbours become dear enemies (Fisher, 1954), and sometimes nasty ones (Temeles, 1994), which is kept because both are true. Fission–fusion parties change membership hourly and nobody calls it instability. Cicadas spend seventeen years alone underground to be loud together for a fortnight. Pumas share kills with non-kin and are 7.7 times more likely to share with someone who once shared with them (Elbroch et al., Science Advances, 2017). Orangutan party size tracks fruit availability rather than species — you change the field, not the animal. A wandering albatross takes a sabbatical year at sea and divorces at 0.3%. Then the thirteenth card, which gets no reframe table on purpose: the octopus settlements at Octopolis and Octlantis are not a secret society but dens crowded onto the only hard substrate for miles, with evictions at the edges. Proximity is not company; proximity plus scarcity is a fight. Four gates, a “Not:” refusals set that declines the syntaxin 1a bait outright. There is no standard amount of company.

We began meaning to sort by material, and the material sort kept failing, because a hermit crab supplies none and a gall wasp supplies none either. What varies is who does the work. The companion to What Looks Like Chaos (Zine No. 55), which asks how a nest gets built; this one asks what gets to count as one, and the answer is much wider. Built: a ten-centimetre pufferfish making a two-metre geometric court on the seabed that divers photographed for years before anyone believed the builder was that small (Kawase, Okata & Ito, Scientific Reports, 2013) — the pattern is not decorative, it sorts fine sand into the centre, which is the part the female inspects. Then the correction that reorganised the whole guide: a termite mound is uninhabited. That is the paper's own word. Fungus-farming termites build massive empty towers above their subterranean nests, and the daily swing of solar heating drives convection through the tunnel network (Ocko, King, Andreen, Bardunias, Turner, Soar & Mahadevan, Journal of Experimental Biology, 2017). The most-photographed animal architecture on Earth is routinely called the wrong kind of thing: it is not shelter, it is infrastructure — closer to a lung than a house. Borrowed: a hermit crab contributes no material to any home it will ever occupy, and when a single shell arrives the crabs gather and queue beside it in descending size order, so that when the largest moves in the whole line moves up at once. Lewis and Rotjan tested the prediction that matters and found it held — vacancy chains distribute benefits across many participants rather than to the first taker. The crab that waits is not being passive; it is standing in the only position from which the chain works. The largest bird nest on record, 2.9 m wide, 6 m deep and over two tonnes, was accumulated across decades until it was more than the tree could hold, which is inheritance and its cost in one object. And a woodpecker's ecological job is not its own nest but the vacancies it leaves behind for everything that cannot excavate. Induced: a gall is oak tissue that the insect made the oak build — the inducer injects effectors including phytohormones that redirect the plant's development, and different wasp species induce distinctively different galls on the same host, which is why the literature calls a gall an extended phenotype of the insect. And not building at all evolved independently at least seven separate times in birds: three times in the cuckoos, once in honeyguides, once in a duck, twice in songbirds (Sorenson & Payne, 2002). A thing discovered seven times over is not a mistake, and that is the sentence the guide would most like a reader to carry. Secreted, or worn: a swiftlet builds from nothing but its own hardened saliva, and the entry states plainly that this is why the species is farmed and harvested at industrial scale rather than leaving it as a footnote. An emperor penguin has no structure at all — an egg on two feet under a fold of belly skin, with the shelter being the huddle, whose walls are other penguins and which moves. If somewhere-to-be requires a structure, the emperor has nowhere and manifestly succeeds, so the definition has to give: some of us have been housed by other people rather than by rooms, and it counted. And a trapdoor spider known as Number 16 held one silk-lined burrow for 43 years, the longest life recorded for any spider — a record that is really about Barbara York Main, who began following that population in 1974 and kept returning for four decades. A long quiet life in one small place is invisible unless somebody decides it is worth watching. Not a nest: the bower, which every list of animal architecture files as the finest nest alive. No egg is ever laid in it and nothing lives there; the female builds the actual nest elsewhere, alone. It is a theatre with deliberate forced perspective — objects graded outward so they subtend a more even visual angle from where she stands (Endler, Endler & Doerr, Current Biology, 2010). We have spent a century calling a stage set a house. And the fourteenth card gets no reframe table, which is a fourth distinct reason for withholding the apparatus. The rooms people build are not graded here. Running a sounds-like/actually over somebody's own room would make us the observer in the doorway with the clipboard — the exact figure No. 55 spends ten spreads indicting — and No. 55 is also explicit that not every mess is a nest, since burnout collapses the architecture and from the doorway the ruins look identical to the curated version. Nobody can sort those two on sight, and the people most certain they can are the reason the guide has a refusals list. The weaver appears in one card that hands off to No. 55 rather than re-running it; the beaver is deliberately absent, already spent in Minor Worlds. Thirteen lineages, thirteen incompatible methods, none ranked, several of them the ones a tidy observer would call failures. The ninth guide to arrive independently at the same sentence: there is no standard nest.

The egg you are imagining occupies one band out of five. A material sort was tried first and collapsed, because a hen's egg and a common murre's are the same object by every material measure. So: eggs that never leave, eggs grown over by skin, eggs carried, eggs set down and guarded, eggs left. In the first band, live birth turns out to have evolved at least 115 separate times in lizards and snakes alone — against roughly 140 origins in all vertebrates — and about a fifth of squamate species lay no egg at all; whether the transition ever runs backwards is genuinely contested and is left open here. A sand tiger shark shows an egg working as food: the mother goes on ovulating after mating, up to ten embryos begin, and two are born. Syngnathid fishes are the only vertebrates with male pregnancy, and it is literal — a placenta-like pouch, embryos joined to the father's circulation, a measured patrotrophy index of 1, and immune suppression to tolerate them. A Surinam toad's eggs are pressed into her back and her own skin grows over each one and builds it a lid; there is no tadpole stage, and the toadlets push the lids off after three to five months. Giant water bug eggs are cemented to the male's dorsum, and the carrying is plumbing rather than devotion: unattended eggs die every time, in air or underwater. A Banggai cardinalfish father holds the clutch in his mouth for a month and eats nothing, because a mouth cannot be a foregut and a nursery at once. Then the band everybody pictures, where four of five are strange: a kiwi egg is 15 to 22 per cent of the female (an ostrich's is 2 to 3); a monotreme egg is leathery and porous enough to be fed through its own shell, with ten days of egg followed by four to seven months of milk; and a deep-sea octopus in Monterey Canyon was revisited eighteen times over fifty-three months, guarding one clutch, never seen to feed. The murre is the entry that indicts us rather than an animal: the pointed egg was explained for decades by rolling in a tight arc, Ingold found little support in 1980, and Birkhead's objection is embarrassingly simple — the arc is wider than the ledge. Stability on a slope and shell strength do the work instead. In the last band, walking away turns out not to be the failure state: a megapode chick hatches under 40 to 150 cm of compost, digs out unaided in a median forty hours, and can fly the same day; a brine shrimp cyst waits up to eighteen dry years and resumes where it stopped; and a cuckoo's shell has a second job no other egg here has, since it must survive being looked at — matched to host retinal function rather than to our eyes, by host-specific female lineages, with the arms-race framing now under live challenge. Then the sixteenth card, dashed, with no reframe table: the egg-crack accounts, borrowed from trans communities and credited as unowned, because there is no mistaken verdict about the morning your own life rearranged itself behind you. One thing the biology does supply is a limit rather than a licence — across birds, squamates, turtles, crocodilians and the echidna, the tool that opens an egg is on the inside. You cannot do it for anyone. You can only be audible. The tenth guide to arrive independently at the same sentence: there is no standard egg.

Companion to No. 59, and it asks the question the zine assumes an answer to: what does resting actually look like, across kin who share almost no anatomy? The bands sort by what carries the rest rather than by taxon or by amount. Hydra and Cassiopea have a nerve net and no brain and meet every behavioural criterion for sleep, and Hydra has no circadian clock either — a roughly four-hour cycle instead (Kanaya et al. 2020). C. elegans rests for two to three hours before each of its four moults (Raizen et al. 2008). Great frigatebirds sleep 42 minutes a day aloft, in the soar and never while flapping; common swifts spend over 99 per cent of a ten-month phase airborne, and the record is not uniform — some individuals roosted in midwinter, others never landed (Hedenström et al. 2016). Sperm whales hang vertically and go silent, unresponsive to a boat until it touched them (Miller et al. 2008). Bears keep their skeleton through six months of disuse; arctic ground squirrels hold a core temperature of −2.9 °C by supercooling, with no antifreeze in the plasma (Barnes 1989); lungfish seal themselves in a cocoon of living cells for years. Emperor penguins reach 37.5 °C inside a huddle while it is −19 °C outside, and two thirds of the saving is geometry rather than warmth (Gilbert et al. 2008). Parrotfish build a mucus tent for 2.5 per cent of a day's energy and cut parasite attacks from nearly all to about one in ten (Grutter et al. 2011). Northern fur seals suppress REM for weeks and never pay it back. And the card the guide would keep if it could keep one: the sleepiest-mammal figure of 19.9 hours is a single 1960s measurement at 33 °C on an unknown number of animals, which becomes 11.0 hours at 26 °C — and about one per cent of mammal species have had their sleep measured at all (Harding et al. 2022). Two cards carry no reframe table: sponges, because nobody knows yet and writing actually over an open question is bluff; and plants, because nyctinasty was named by Linnaeus and Darwin himself called the daytime version “improperly” sleep, read here from the 1880 primary. Sixteen animals we reconstructed wrong, sorted by the kind of mistake, and — this guide’s one addition to the house form, borrowed from How We Got Here — every card carries a status: revised (ten cards), contested (four), or name stuck (two). A catalogue of corrections that will not say which corrections are finished would read as a list of settled triumphs, which is the smoothing it is complaining about. Assembled wrong: Hallucigenia was published in 1977 walking on its spines, inverted by Ramsköld and Hou in 1991, and turned end-for-end by Smith and Caron in 2015 when they found the eyes, mouth ring and tooth-lined throat at the other end — wrong on one axis for fourteen years and on the other for twenty-four more. Anomalocaris spent most of a century as three animals in three groups: a shrimp-like appendage, the “jellyfish” Peytoia, and the “sponge” Laggania, united by Whittington and Briggs in 1985 — and then the correction was itself corrected, when Daley and Bergström found a three-plate oral cone in 2012 and Peytoia became valid again. Cope put the skull of Elasmosaurus on the end of its neck in 1868, reading a neck as a tail; and the famous story about who caught him is wrong — it was Joseph Leidy, on 8 March 1870, with Marsh in the room, and Marsh’s claim survives only in a newspaper piece two decades later. Mantell put the Iguanodon thumb spike on its nose; it took thirty-odd whole skeletons at Bernissart for Dollo to move it to the hand. Known from almost nothing: Deinocheirus was two arms found on 9 July 1965 and named in 1970 by Halszka Osmólska and Ewa Roniewicz, and it stayed honestly unplaced for forty-four years until two near-complete skeletons showed a humpbacked, duck-billed omnivore. The Spinosaurus holotype burned in the Munich bombing of 24–25 April 1944, after Stromer’s requests to move the collection were refused — so every reconstruction since argues from photographs, and the aquatic reading is contested. Helicoprion’s tooth whorl was placed on the snout, the upper jaw, the back and the tail before a 2013 CT scan put it in the lower jaw — of a specimen that had been in a drawer since 1950. The line moved: Brontosaurus (the short form of the zine). Torosaurus, proposed as merely a mature Triceratops in 2010 and rejected in 2012, still unresolved — the mirror image of the Brontosaurus case, a merge rather than a split, with the opposite fate. Nanotyrannus, dismissed for forty years as a juvenile T. rex and reinstated in 2025 by Zanno and Napoli on a near-adult skeleton from the Duelling Dinosaurs block, with a second species nobody had separated out. And Tanystropheus, one species until a CT scan made it two, both size classes fully grown. Three of those four errors were the same error: explaining a difference by age. The name outlived it: Oviraptor means egg seizer and it was brooding its own clutch — and the card is careful that the 1995 brooding specimen is an oviraptorid later named Citipati, not Osborn’s animal, because the tidy version of that story is the one that travels. Basilosaurus means king lizard and Owen showed it was a mammal within five years; he proposed Zeuglodon and priority refused it. Both names are permanent, which is the band the zine cares about: a label outlives its refutation by rule or by repetition, and only one of those admits what it is doing. Tidier than the evidence: the fish-crawls-out story has a date problem — Devonian trackways about eighteen million years older than the earliest tetrapod bodies — and the retelling of that correction is smoothed too, because those trackways are themselves disputed. The film raptor is not the fossil one. And the tail-dragging dinosaur was corrected by a whole field changing its mind, from one 1969 monograph. Two cards are dashed and carry no reframe table. Mary Anning found, prepared and drew the first complete plesiosaur in 1823 and Conybeare presented it without naming her; women could not join the Geological Society until 1904, and on her only London trip no label carried her name. She is not a specimen, and running sounds like / actually down the side of a person would file her with the misreconstructed animals, which is the injury. And the last card has nothing to correct yet: on the guide’s own argument some entries above are currently wrong, and it says where to expect it — the age explanation, the fragment that fits every reading, and the instrument that arrives before the answer. Arrival line: there is no final draft, and the guide says plainly why it departs from the house formula: what varies here is not the animals but us. Eighteen cards, sixteen entries.

Sorted by mechanism, because sorting by degree of relatedness collapsed on the first entry that belonged at both ends of the line. In superb fairy-wrens, 76% of offspring (138 of 181) were sired by extra-group males who give no care, and 95% of broods contained such young — and every male in the group feeds the brood regardless (Mulder et al., 1994). Greater anis share one clutch between unrelated pairs with no kin discrimination. Pied kingfishers admit an unrelated helper only when the pair cannot feed the brood alone — hospitality that began in need, kept rather than trimmed. Two bonobos at Wamba adopted infants from a different social group and nursed them, the first such record in a great ape (Tokuyama et al., 2021); a bottlenose dolphin at Rangiroa raised a presumed melon-headed whale calf beside her own (Carzon et al., 2019). Banded mongooses give birth 64% on one night and escorts do not sort pups by parentage — a veil of ignorance, in the literature's own phrase. Because 55% of cooperatively breeding birds really do nest primarily with kin, one section is for them: long-tailed tits identify relatives by call similarity, and post-reproductive killer whale grandmothers help more than breeding ones, because a grandmother carrying her own calf has less to give. A final section corrects us — Komdeur's Seychelles warblers stay as helpers on good territories rather than breed on poor ones, so constraint is arithmetic rather than a wall, and the Damaraland mole-rat, the textbook eusocial mammal, is not an obligate cooperative breeder after all. The catalogue for No. 69 and No. 70, and the guide that takes on a whole genre: every listicle of rainbow kinds sorts by appearance and then ranks by rarity, and both sorts fail. Appearance fails twice, in opposite directions — a fogbow looks nothing like a rainbow and differs only in drop size, its colours all present and diffracted so wide that they overlap into white; a sea spray bow looks identical to a rainbow and is genuinely a different bow, because salt raises the refractive index and shrinks the radius by about 0.8°, so the two stand visibly misaligned in one sky. Rarity fails because it is not a property of any bow: a circumhorizontal arc needs the sun above 58°, which is impossible north of 55°N and happens for roughly 140 hours a year in London against 670 in Los Angeles. Supernumerary arcs cannot be produced by geometric optics at all — Thomas Young explained them by interference in 1804 and they became evidence for the wave theory of light; Airy dismissed him for predicting the wrong angles, and Young had merely missed a 90° phase shift. Third- and fourth-order bows stand around the sun and waited until 2011 for a photograph, found by people who knew exactly where to look. A moonbow carries every colour and a long exposure records them: it is the rods, not the bow, that cannot report them. A dewbow is a hyperbola because a cone met a plane, and a full-circle bow is the only kind there is, seen from somewhere the ground is not in the way. Rainbow light is about 96% polarised, so a lens can switch it off while the sky is unchanged. And the glory is carded as openly unfinished — the surface-wave consensus holds and the precise mechanism is still called obscure. The section on what the light did inside the drop is led by the double rainbow, carded with its mechanism: one bounce leaves at about 42.7°, two at about 50° with the colour order reversed, the outer bow is 43% as bright because a longer path loses more light, and Alexander’s dark band between them is a direction into which neither bow returns any light at all. The mechanism is the catalogue’s; the argument that “secondary” is a rank the physics does not contain stays No. 70’s. Three cards get no reframe table: the ice halos, because they are not rainbows; the antisolar cone — that the bow is centred on your own shadow and no two people see the same one — which is the whole of No. 69; and the flag and the song, which live at the Sound rack. Unique to each observer is not the same as unreal — the guide refuses the word illusion on its own page.

In July 1977 Bob Marley recorded Punky Reggae Party with Lee Perry after hearing The Clash cover a Jamaican record — a guest list for an alliance that did not exist until it was read out, and the following April roughly 100,000 people marched six miles through National Front territory to hear The Clash, Steel Pulse and X-Ray Spex on one Rock Against Racism bill. Naming a thing helped it happen, which is what neurodiversity did too. Then the physics, because the physics is unreasonably good: sound needs matter — in a vacuum there is none at all — so every note anyone has heard was carried by nitrogen and oxygen forged in stars. A pure sine wave has a pitch and almost no identity; Helmholtz worked out in 1863 that what tells you who is playing lives entirely in the overtones above the note. And distortion, the sound the genre is named by, is a nonlinearity adding harmonics that were never sent in — difference, deliberately added. It reaches you at the skeleton, too: you hear your own voice partly through skull bone, which is why recordings sound wrong. Thirty-six songs from the Stimpunks PSA — Bikini Kill, Dream Nails, Kae Tempest, Le Tigre, The Linda Lindas, Gossip, pink suits — with the door test punk actually contributed, and the honest part: a loud room is itself an access barrier, and acceptance is not any scene's nature but a practice re-won in every room.

Then the physics of the light she shares a name with, which turns out to be about exactly this. The solar wind delivers energy and nothing else; the colour is the atom's own — that famous green is oxygen's 557.7 nm line. And that line is a forbidden transition: it breaks the electric-dipole selection rules, so instead of the nanoseconds an allowed transition takes, the atom waits about 0.7 seconds before letting go, and the red line waits 110. Which is why altitude decides the colour — lower down the air is crowded and a collision takes the energy first. The most famous light in the sky is a slow release the rules call forbidden, and it only completes where nothing crowds it. Twenty-eight performances across six movements, plus stim-listening (Jim Irion's coinage) and the reason Ryan's own playlist is nearly all live footage. The page is careful about whose word is whose: she calls it emotion; we are the ones calling it stimming, and it says so rather than putting the term in her mouth. It starts from the most-looked-at face in pop and the one fact everybody repeats about it, which is wrong. He did not have different-coloured eyes. Both irises were the same colour; in February 1962 a schoolfriend punched him and a fingernail paralysed the muscles that contract the left iris, so that pupil could never close again — anisocoria, not heterochromia. A pupil stuck wide is a hole full of shadow, which is why the eye reads darker in exactly the bright light where a working pupil contracts, which is to say under every stage light and camera flash he ever stood in. That changes what kind of thing the famous feature was: heterochromia is a variation you're born with; this was an injury, reportedly with lasting effects on his depth perception. Glamour is not an accommodation. Then the second thing everyone knows — the constellation named for him in 2016 is not a constellation; there are 88, the list was fixed in the 1920s, and the observatory that made it said plainly it was an invented asterism. Both errors lean the same way: they round a damaged iris and a small tribute up into something more elegant, and the tidier version travels further. Which is Too Good to Check with a soundtrack — and it has a cost, because while the myth is that beautiful nobody asks what a fixed pupil is like under a follow spot.

David Byrne from the 1977 CBGB audition to Who Is the Sky? in 2025. The essay runs on one finding — groove is measurable and agreed upon across listeners, and the feature doing the work is repetition, because a figure has to come round again before a body can meet it rather than chase it. Which is how Remain in Light was made: instruments recorded largely one at a time, each part a short figure held without developing, credited openly to Fela Kuti and West African polyrhythm. Then the same method at two more scales — early Talking Heads as a performance style defined by negatives, which is subtraction working as an access strategy; and Stop Making Sense, which adds one body at a time until the stage is full and the man who could not relax is dancing. Nobody fixed him; the room filled up. The synchrony research behind that is real and, per a 2017 meta-analysis, modest, and the page says so. On his own account of being Autistic the rack is careful: self-described, hedged in the original, not upgraded here.

Dolly Parton 1967–2023, made three days after she died. The essay opens on something worth checking before repeating: her first hit, “Dumb Blonde,” was written by Curly Putman — the persona arrived before she had any say in it, and the self-invention story is really about what she did once she was inside it. Then the 1974 refusal, told as she tells it: Colonel Tom Parker wanted half the publishing for Elvis, she said no and cried all night, and Whitney Houston settled the argument eighteen years later. A third section pulls the catalogue's dark run forward — “Down from Dover,” “The Bridge,” a stillbirth and a suicide — because the woman who built the Imagination Library was never naive about what happens to people; Cottom's reading of that run as gothic motherhood is borrowed with the tag on, as is her argument about blonde as unmarked whiteness. The last section is about what travels: “9 to 5” sells productivity software now, and in 2023 a Wisconsin school barred first-graders from singing “Rainbowland” under a policy on controversial issues — a song about there being no gate, stopped at one.

A song told a six-year-old that rainbows have nothing to hide, and he took it as permission to love the real thing more than any story about what it was concealing.

“Rainbow Connection” — Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher, sung by Jim Henson as Kermit, opening The Muppet Movie in 1979 — grants that rainbows are visions, downgrades them to illusions, and then lands the line that did the work for a science-loving kid: rainbows have nothing to hide. No pot of gold, no other side, nothing withheld. As a closeted queer and atheist child, Ryan found that observational reality better than any story about what a rainbow might be concealing — and the essay is honest that the song gets one word wrong. A rainbow is not an illusion. An illusion is a mistake perception makes; a rainbow is occurring, calculable to a fraction of a degree, and Roger Bacon measured its maximum elevation at 42° around 1267 with an astrolabe and no theory of refraction. What is true is stranger and better: it has no location — a direction rather than a place, centred on the shadow of your own head. Carl Sagan later supplied the vocabulary in The Demon-Haunted World (1995): his parents taught him “the two uneasily cohabiting modes of thought that are central to the scientific method.” Uneasily is the load-bearing word — not reconciled, sharing a house. NeuroTribes’ chapter “Princes of the Air” supplies the lineage, with Asperger forced to walk back his claim that his patients’ interests were remote from real concerns because their imaginations kept anticipating science by decades; and Dorion Sagan — son of Carl Sagan and Lynn Margulis, whose endosymbiosis this collection already runs on — calls detail and breadth “a kind of alembic, an antidote to both.” Then the fact that closes it. In March 2023 the School District of Waukesha, Wisconsin pulled “Rainbowland” from a first-grade concert as potentially controversial — and the song chosen to replace it was “Rainbow Connection,” which was initially banned too, reinstated only after parents pushed back; the teacher who spoke publicly was later terminated. A song whose entire argument is that rainbows have nothing hidden in them was, for a moment, too controversial for six-year-olds. Seven sections: eleven versions of the song; the Garfunkel and Oates joke that reaches the same thesis; eleven of “Over the Rainbow,” which wants the opposite thing; four of “What a Wonderful World,” which wants this one; the colours named as a list and as physics; the rainbow turned inward as identity; and finally Merle Haggard’s sour “Rainbow Stew” against a man on a mountain undone by a double rainbow, the two modes back to back with no attempt to reconcile them. All forty video ids were resolved through oEmbed before anything was written about them — five carried no artist in their link text, and four of those we would have got wrong. No lyric is reproduced anywhere on the page, which is stated rather than worked around.

The face is the field, with a rule where Helen Edgar's title reads Monotropic, because that is her word for her own experience and a blank sheet must not assume it of whoever picks it up. The reverse is a blank Constellation Index of ten rows — ten rather than twenty, since twenty is her number and printing hers would quietly turn a personal map into a quota. The stars are SVG circles rather than the site's usual CSS starfield, which matters more here than anywhere else on this site: browsers leave background graphics off by default, so a gradient field would have printed as an empty white box, and a blank sheet with no stars on it is not a blank sheet, it is a mistake. The visual language, with its numbers and its receipts: Atkinson Hyperlegible, chosen because it was drawn for readers the standard face failed; five accents held within 16 points of each other in lightness; body text at 18.84:1, because full opacity is the house rule. Includes the palette's honest lineage — it began as Solarized and kept the method, not one of the colors — and the print pass that stopped 44 of 46 pages printing blank.
