A UK Prime Minister cannot simply take the Good Friday Agreement’s border poll mechanism “off the table”.
If it appears likely to the Secretary of State that a majority in the North would vote for a united Ireland, the law says they must call a poll.
That’s the legal position.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out calling a referendum on Irish unification, describing a border poll as "off the table".
He was speaking during his first official visit to Northern Ireland as prime minister.
