Coming next year, meet Sycamore Bell. He's not the world's greatest detective. But he does answer the world's greatest detective's letters.

Very curious to know whether @CCHQPress and @KemiBadenoch are comfortable with a Conservative MP using "Yookay" to describe people who have British citizenship but somehow aren't quite really British. Is there an easy way we can spot these people?

    Replying to @FraserNelson
The fact that the state has also given 81% of these social tenants born abroad Yookay citizenship (as well as a million quid of lifetime rental subsidy) isn’t really the counterpoint you think it is.

Sulking Towards Victory: my SKETCH of Nigel Farage, Bad Winner. thecritic.co.uk/sulking-toward…
The thinnest material in the world is graphene, a honeycomb lattice of carbon that is a single atom thick. The second thinnest, we learned on Friday morning, is Nigel Farage’s skin.

Seriously. How fragile do you have to be to sulk through your own election victory? There are peaches that bruise less easily than Farage’s ego. Had not enough people voted for him? Watching the rolling news in Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un could be heard muttering “mate, get over yourself”.

Yesterday's SKETCH was filed before we got the Cabinet appointments, but there were already hints of the weirdest thing about the Coming of Burnham: the self-congratulation of the Labour Party at its defeat of its ancient enemy, the Labour Party. thecritic.co.uk/burnhams-begin…
As the Burnhams climbed out of the car, there was a huge cheer. The hated Labour government had been overthrown, and a new era of peace and prosperity was being ushered in with a bright, fresh Labour administration!

Our new leader made his way up the street, shaking hands in triumph. Looking at the pictures, it was easy to forget that his presence there owed far more to the last guy’s failure than to anything Burnham had actually done. His victory was the result of Labour grabbing him out of desperation, rather than any massive public endorsement.

Perhaps that was why TV talking heads were talking about pressure for an early election. It’s not clear where this pressure is supposed to be coming from. Labour MPs certainly don’t want one, and neither do the Conservatives. Of all the new prime ministers we’ve had — and we’ve had a few lately — Burnham must be the only one to be greeted with a leader of the opposition begging him not to go to the country.
