This chart shows the prevalence of different shops and services across English high streets. The poorest parts of the country have roughly three times the share of ‘health reducing’ amenities (takeaways, off-licences, betting and vape shops) while lacking in public toilets.

The evidence is clear: countries with lower NEET rates than the UK get there almost entirely through higher rates of post-18 education. In these countries, more young people stay in education for longer and often combine it with work.
