Pretty sure I just heard a peregrine falcon in Lower Queen Anne. I know there’s a nest a 15 minute walk down on the Seattle Opera building… is this a bird hunting that far away, or juvenile dispersing?

This is right. But academic science also has to reckon with the fact that its paper/citation currency defines success within academia, and that currency often has a surprisingly weak exchange rate for real-world scientific value to taxpayers.

Staying in academia for a decade was a huge career/financial mistake. I only paid off undergrad loans after I left. I come from a lower middle class background; my dad’s a woodworker and my mom’s a secretary. Advice I would tell someone in my shoes today? Don’t go into academia.

My recent experiments with patio gardening have made me realize I had severely underestimated how much joy daily tending to plants over morning coffee can bring. Also, even a small herb box (thyme, chives, tarragon, oregano) can make a normal egg scramble 2x more delicious.
