NewWrite together in real timeFree · Open source · AGPL-3.0

Write research paperswith less busywork.

Oleafly is a free desktop workspace for writing papers in LaTeX, Typst, and Markdown. Find sources, manage citations, and see your paper take shape in one place. Bring an AI assistant to revise a section, create a figure, or fix a broken build, with changes you can review. Your project stays in ordinary files you own, and you can use the editor with or without AI.

New in this release

Write the paper together, in the same file.

Share a project with your co-authors and you'll see their cursors move as they type, each one labelled with a name. Comments sit next to the line they're about. If your train loses Wi-Fi, keep writing. Your edits go through when you reconnect.

How to set up a server
  • Named cursors

You can tell at a glance who is in the methods section and who is fixing Table 1.

  • Comments on the line

Ask a question on a sentence and mark it resolved when it's fixed.

  • See who's here

Avatars show who's in the project and which file they're working in.

  • Run your own server

Install Oleafly Server on a machine your group controls with one command.

Research Space

One window for the whole paper.

Sources, figures, the bibliography and the compiled PDF are all in one window. The outline and the structure map follow the file you have open, so you can click a heading or a label and land on its line.

  • Explorer, Outline and Structure share one sidebar
  • Click a label or a citation to jump to where it is defined

Live commenting

Ask about a sentence right next to it.

Select a few words and choose Add comment. Type @ to pull a co-author in. Replies stay in the thread next to the text, and once the question is answered, Resolve clears it.

  • Threads stay attached when the text around them moves
  • Resolved threads are one click away if you need them again

Cloud Sync

Your library on every computer you write on.

Back up to Dropbox, Google Drive or any S3 storage, and every project gets a copy in a place you own. Open Oleafly on another computer and your library is already there. API keys and AI chats stay on the computer where you made them.

  • Pick which projects sync on each computer
  • Deleting from your cloud storage always asks first

LaTeX, Typst and Markdown

Write in the format your venue asks for.

LaTeX compiles with the bundled Tectonic or your own TeX install. Typst has its own bundled compiler, and Markdown goes through Pandoc. The outline, the structure map and the live preview work the same way in all three.

  • Compilers come with the app, so there's no TeX install to fight
  • Convert between LaTeX, Typst and Word from the Tools gallery

Proofread

Spelling and grammar are checked on your computer. LaTeX commands, math and citation keys are left alone.

Citations

Search arXiv, Semantic Scholar, Crossref, PubMed and OpenAlex at once and cite a result straight from the list.

References

Citations, labels and bib entries in one panel. Undefined and duplicate keys get flagged as you type.

Git, GitHub and Zotero

Commit and push from the sidebar, publish a project to GitHub, and pull references in from Zotero, EndNote or any .bib file.

Draw it, get TikZ

Put boxes and arrows on a canvas, then switch to the TikZ source and keep editing.

47 free tools

PDF to LaTeX, arXiv to Typst, spreadsheets to tables, BibTeX checks and more. No project needed.

All your work in one place

Papers, theses, slides and grant drafts sit on one shelf as covers you can tell apart at a glance. Search finds a project by its name or by a line inside it, and bookmarks keep this week's work up front.

Template packs

Download a pack of conference, journal or thesis templates. Once it's on your machine, every template compiles offline.

Bring your Overleaf projects

Sign in to Overleaf from Oleafly, import your projects and keep them in sync. A .zip, a Word file, an arXiv paper or a GitHub repo works too.

Preflight

Before you submit, check the layout, accessibility, references and anything that would break blind review.

AI assistant

Ask for help. Read the diff. Then decide.

The assistant can read your project, run a compile, fix the error it finds or draft a TikZ figure. Each edit shows up as a diff you can review and undo. Bring a hosted model or your own endpoint, or run Ollama and keep it all on your machine.

  • Plan mode reads the project before it writes anything
  • Turn AI off and the rest of the app works the same

CLI agents

Bring the agent you already pay for.

Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and other command-line agents connect over ACP and work inside your project. Their edits come to you for review like any other change.

  • Each agent signs in with your own account
  • Approve each edit, or let a long task run on its own

PDF preview

A PDF viewer made for drafts.

Zoom, two-page spreads, a dark reading mode and search are all in the toolbar. Click a word in the PDF to jump to its line in the editor. If a build fails, the last good PDF stays up while you fix it.

  • Present the PDF full screen from the toolbar
  • An outline drawer for long documents

oleaflyc

Everything the app does, from a terminal.

oleaflyc builds, checks and edits Oleafly projects with the same engines and settings as the app. Every command can answer in JSON, so scripts, CI jobs and coding agents can drive it.

  • oleaflyc build --watch

    Build and watch

Compile LaTeX, Typst and Markdown exactly the way the app does, or watch a folder and rebuild on every save.

  • oleaflyc check --json

    Preflight in your CI

Run Preflight and the linter in a GitHub Action and fail the job when a paper isn't ready to submit.

  • oleaflyc agent run "Make it compile"

    A headless agent

Hand the assistant a task from the shell. It uses your providers and keys, and nothing lands until you apply the changes.

  • oleaflyc ask "Which sections cite preprints?"

    Ask about a project

Get an answer about a paper without opening it and without touching a single file.

  • oleaflyc daemon status

    Keeps going after you quit

Research tasks move to a small background helper when you close Oleafly and come back when you open it.

  • oleaflyc cite 10.1038/nature14539

    Citations from the shell

Search the literature, add a paper to refs.bib from its DOI and find broken keys before a reviewer does.

  • oleaflyc mcp

An MCP server for your agents

Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini work on your project through it, with the same tools the assistant has.

  • oleaflyc remote sync

    Your collaboration server

Sign in, sync a shared project and run an Oleafly Server, all from the command line.

  • oleaflyc import overleaf

    Projects straight from Overleaf

Sign in to Overleaf once, pull any of your Overleaf projects down as a local folder and keep it in sync from the shell.

  • oleaflyc convert main.tex --to docx

    Export and convert

Turn a paper into Word, HTML or Markdown, or move it between LaTeX and Typst, without opening the app.

  • oleaflyc checkpoint restore v12

    Checkpoints from the shell

List the versions Oleafly saved after each good build and bring one back in a single command.

  • ssh · slurm · cloud

    Experiments on bigger machines

Send analysis and training runs to a server over SSH, a Slurm cluster or a cloud machine, and pull the results back into the paper.

A powerful research harness

From first citation to final PDF.

Draft, compile, proofread, search, cite, review, and publish without stitching together separate tools. Oleafly keeps your source, preview, references, AI, and Git history in one workspace you control.

Import what you have

Reconstruct many text-based PDFs into editable LaTeX locally, convert DOCX through a managed Pandoc, or let a vision model transcribe a photo of a page. Optional AI refinement after.

Export where you're going

Export PDF, DOCX, HTML, Markdown, and more from contextual menus. You can also download the whole project as a source ZIP.

Make it yours

Vim mode, light and dark themes, accent colors, seven layout presets, and editable keyboard shortcuts. An editor should fit your hands.

Write in Code or Visual

Flip any LaTeX or Markdown document into a visual editor: headings, lists, bold, links, edited directly, with coordinated undo across both modes. Unsupported commands stay visible as raw blocks instead of being silently dropped, so the round-trip back to source is non-destructive.

SyncTeX, word-level

⌘-click a word in the PDF and land on that exact word in the source. Jump back with ⌘⇧J.

Code intelligence

Go to definition, find references, and rename a label, citation key, or macro across every file.

Slash commands

Type / for a Notion-style insert menu: /figure, /table, /section, /cite, /math.

Citations by DOI

Paste a DOI, arXiv id, or URL. Oleafly fetches the BibTeX, dedupes it, and inserts the \cite.

Bring your whole library

Batch-import BibTeX, RIS, EndNote XML, and Zotero RDF. Everything is deduped against your project before a single entry lands in the .bib.

Command palette

⌘K fuzzy-searches every action in the app: projects, files, settings, the lot.

Model-agnostic AI

Connect your preferred model provider, run Ollama locally, or use an installed CLI agent with its own account. Set the approval mode for the work at hand. The editor works without AI, too.

Research on tap

The agent searches alphaXiv and OpenAlex, pulls paper content, and verifies citations against Crossref before they enter your bibliography.

Built-in proofreading

Proofread spelling and grammar locally with Hunspell and Harper. Oleafly ignores LaTeX commands and math so the checks stay focused on your prose.

Give research its own workspace

Write a task brief, choose an agent, and keep drafting while it works in an isolated copy. Follow its activity, preview the changed files, and apply the results you want.

From one page to six hundred

The editor and virtualized PDF viewer stay smooth whether it's a one-page resume or a book-length thesis.

A PDF viewer for real reading

Detach the preview to a second monitor, read two-page spreads, invert colors for late nights, or go fullscreen to present.

Diagram Composer

Describe a diagram and the AI writes the TikZ or CeTZ, compiles the figure on its own, and fixes overlaps by looking at the render. Or draw it yourself on a real canvas, as TikZ for LaTeX, fletcher for Typst or a Mermaid flowchart for Markdown, and the code stays in step with the drawing both ways. Export transparent high-res PNGs, fully offline.

Three engines, one workspace

Keep LaTeX, Typst, and Markdown projects in the same library. Choose a compiler for each project and use the same preview, references, versioning, and AI tools.

The research loop

Research, write, verify, publish.

Move from literature search to submission without losing context. Oleafly keeps your sources, references, figures, compiler output, and history together in one inspectable workflow.

  1. 1

    Research

Search open research sources, turn DOIs and arXiv IDs into BibTeX, and verify citations before they enter your bibliography.

  2. 2

    Write

Write in LaTeX, Typst, or Markdown with templates, project-wide code intelligence, and an optional AI assistant with approval controls.

  3. 3

    Verify

Compile locally, read clear errors, and jump between the source and PDF. Preflight shows what parsers and screen readers will extract.

  4. 4

    Publish

Export PDF, DOCX, or HTML, package the source for submission, and push to GitHub from the same folder where the work began.

FAQ

What to know before you switch.

Didn't find your answer? Ask on Discord or GitHub Discussions.

What is Oleafly?

Oleafly is a free desktop workspace for papers, theses, resumes, and other technical documents. Write in LaTeX, Typst, or Markdown, preview the PDF, manage references, and use an optional AI assistant. Your projects stay in ordinary files on your computer.

Is it really free?

Yes. Oleafly is free and open source. The desktop app does not add a subscription. If you connect a paid AI provider, that provider may charge for usage. Local models through Ollama do not require a paid API.

Which AI models does it work with?

Bring a key for one of 10 hosted providers, run models locally through Ollama, or point Oleafly at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. It also runs 14 command-line agents inside the editor, Claude Code and Codex among them, with the tools and accounts you already have. Pick the runtime and model in the assistant.

Do I need an account?

No. You can install Oleafly and write without signing up for anything, and your projects stay in ordinary folders on your computer. You only sign in for the parts that need it: joining a collaboration server your group runs, or turning on Dropbox sync. AI providers and Git hosts use their own credentials.

Which tools can it replace?

For many workflows, Oleafly can replace separate writing, proofreading, compilation, citation, PDF, resume, AI, and Git clients. It still works with ordinary files and GitHub, so you can adopt it without locking your work into a proprietary format.

Can I import an existing paper or resume?

Yes. Open a folder, import a ZIP, clone from GitHub, or pull a paper straight from arXiv. Exports from online LaTeX editors work too, and Oleafly finds the main document for you. Text-based PDFs convert to LaTeX locally, Word files go through Pandoc, and a vision model can transcribe scans or photos.

Is the PDF output ATS-friendly?

ATS readiness depends on the template and content, so Oleafly does not promise a score. Its resume templates use selectable Unicode text, embedded fonts, single-column layouts, and linear reading order. Preflight shows what a parser actually extracts before you send the PDF.

What about collaboration and sync?

Edit the same project together in real time, with named cursors and comments next to the lines they're about. Your group runs its own Oleafly Server, and everyone keeps the project as ordinary files on their own computer, so you can keep writing offline and your edits sync when you reconnect. Dropbox sync keeps your library and settings in step across your own devices. Git still works alongside it: publish to GitHub, then push and pull from inside Oleafly.

Can I write offline or without AI?

Yes. Writing, local compilation, PDF review, and proofreading work without AI. Download the packages, fonts, and tools your project needs before going offline. For local AI, download a model in Ollama and connect its local server.

Can an agent work while I keep writing?

Yes. Open Research Tasks, give the task a brief, and choose an agent. It works in an isolated copy while you continue with the paper. Follow the activity, preview the changed files, and apply the results you choose.
