For those new to Brighton Peace & Environment centre, the organisation has been around in various forms now for over three decades, originating as a group of concerned residents setting up a peace shop in 1982.
During the 80s, the organisation was volunteer-led and expanded to address several interconnected issues, including human rights, peace, environmental issues and social justice. The membership income supported the organisation’s activities, and, as such, the organisation reflected the membership’s concerns and expertise.
In the 90s BPEC was awarded the status of development education centre supporting educators to teach global citizenship, helping teachers be aware of their personal world view and thus be aware of the need to give children balanced understanding of their place in the world and their local and global neighbours.
