When you look away, things fall apart

When you look away, things fall apart

It has been a while since I looked at my side hussles. Life gets in the way. Far too many hours of work had resulted in a tiny monthly income. When this slow drip of money all but dried up, it barely registered.

On a rare day off, I decided to have a look at why. Oh dear. It was bad.

One site had decided I was no longer worth having as a customer and closed my account. Thier name is not mentioned as I don’t want to give them any press. They did not give me a regular income, but when they paid, it was always worth it. They wanted to charge fees to simply list a Print-On-Demand (POD) design. Not worth it, so goodbye.

Then there is Redbubble, my preferred POD site. Firstly, they added fees. Fortunately, these fees are applies to sales, not for listing. Instead of increasing their standard markup, which would have made products more expensive, they dipped into the artist profit margin. Ouch. Given that my designs are already on the site, it is just tough luck for me.

Secondly, there is copyrite. If someone reports a design as a breach of IP, even if dishonestly, the site needs to act. If you are absent from the wheel, you can not engage in this process. Your designs are delisted. Any links to those designs die: published, shared, or advertised. So many dead links.

Then there is site design. If you link to a POD site, to design categories, collections, or specific designs, those links may no longer be in a valid format. More dead links. Many more.

Meh! Dead links? Remember I wrote that Link-Building Tool? That too was broken. If a site changes their page format, my tool becomes useless.

Back to the grind

I am not complaining. My sleaves are rolled up. I am plodding along, fixing my link tool, editing and deleting web pages.

This is an opportunity to clear out some of the dead wood. Shuffle some things around. Think about a new direction. Will this make me more money? Probably not. Could this form a fresh foundation? I hope so.

Devil in the Detail

As part of my odyesey into Print On Demand (POD), I have been producing many tartan designs. As time went by, I have increased the detail in the images. That is, until I hit a wall.

Writing macro code in Libreoffice Calc (like Excel, only free) took me only so far. Limits to the VBA-style code would not get me close enough to detail I was after.

What did I do? Give up, obviously.

Then I found Python scripting. With a little faffing about, I was able to get Python scripts working in Libreoffice. This enabled me to use my existing interface as well as the fantastic features of Python.

It took a week, but I was able to recode my designs to draw the tartans, apply masks (e.g. my dragon mask) and apply watermarks. In batch. Really fast.

It is still going to take an age to plough through all of my designs. Before going all the way down the rabbit-hole, I must push on learning Python.

Glass – Fragile

Warning Stickers

After a few Whatsapp messages from a friend, I felt that I had been challenged:

“Glass – Fragile” warnings that people may pay attention to.

Instead of going for vivid/shouty colours, I chose to go down with images that may be found “interesting”.

My friend is getting the high-res images for free. If anybody else is interest in these designs, they are available as stickers and cards on RedBubble:

1 Template – 55 Designs

Smashing it out of the park? A quick update on my previous blog AI – Print On Demand from my phone where I suggested that I had a new template and was going to create a batch of 50 new designs.

I tried to curate a batch of 60 designs to my favourite 50 and failed. The 3D Cube Dreams collection is made up of 55 designs. It is hard to cull something you created, even if it was made possible by a machine-learning style engine.

As before, I have chosen to showcase the designs by putting them on phone cases:

AI – Print On Demand from my phone

Designing with Artificial Intelligence

This week I posted 50 new designs to Redbubble. My target products were phone cases. With free AI, I was able to do most of this from my phone.

Working on my mobile phone using Artificial Intelligence

Before I could start using my phone for this project, I needed a base image. PLEASE only use base images that you have created yourself.

Using LibreOffice Draw, I knocked up a simple repeating geometric pattern that I call “Impossible Trellis”.

This is a corner of my base template, using an orange colour pallette.

Create unique designs using Artificial Intelligence

For geometric patterns, I love using the AI style site Deep Dream Generator (DDG).

This site can be used for free with am hourly top-up of free credits. The more designs you share on the site, and the more likes you get, the more credits-per-hour you will be given.

Before switching to the mobile phone, I needed to upload my base images. I had red, green, blue and orange versions in case I needed to “tune” the AI engine.

From there, everything I did was from my mobile phone.

Spare few minutes? New design!

See my shared designs on DDG – Do not steal designs. Artists are getting better at finding copy-cats.

In the above link you will see my designs. Search designs by ALL artists – most of these are amazing and will give you great ideas. Have fun. Experiment. Share!

Once you have saved your favourite creations to your phone’s gallery, you might not notice that these images are SMALL / low-resolution.

Before posting to RedBubble print-on-demand, I needed to make my images larger and increase the level of detail. For free, of course.

Image

AI Enlarger – this is a wonderful app to increase the sizes of images and can add in detail to prevent blurring.

The maximum size the free version will give is 8000×8000 pixels. This is plenty big enough for what I needed. For this project, I only needed half of that.

To get free credits on this app, you have to watch adverts. No problem there.

Print-On-Demand (POD)

Once images have been enlarged, they can be uploaded to your favourite POD service.

Working from my phone, I prefer to use RedBubble.

TIP: Before uploading your first design, create a “Collection”. This will save you from adding your designs to a collection later on.

The beauty of creating multiple designs from the same base image is that you will be working with images of all the same size: Once you have uploaded your first design (and added it to a collection), it is easy to load many more by using the COPY function – change the title, change the image, save.

Share, share and share again

When I remember, I post my new designs on this WordPress site, on Tumblr (Google still scans it), twitter, etc.

Here are some links to WordPress galleries created using my RedBubble Image Gallery tool:

Next project?

It was so convenient being able to do this from my phone, I knocked up a new base image, and I am currently half way through another 50 designs!

Bubbler Review: Longford

The Holidays are coming…

The Holidays are coming… The Holidays are coming…

The #RBandME hashtag has been used heavily recently, often by a small number of Bubblers listing ALL of their products.

Scrolling through, I eventually found the artist Longford and some of their Christmas designs. So, in case the #RBandME tag has hidden these gems, here are some examples:

Embracing new products

If you are lucky enough to have seen Neil’s work before, you will know that his art can be political. You might not have seen his graphical/abstract pieces.

My own designs, and reviews I have posted, show a love for repeating patterns. Unlike me, Neil does not let his computer do the designing for him.

His repeating patterns are really good, so why (at the time of writing) has he only put 9 of them on Desk Mats?

Every time RedBubble launches a new product it is a total pain in the whatsit to enable and check each appropriate design. It is worth it.

So come on Neil. Make this review redundant by enabling some of those corkers on desk mats!

Bubbler Review: ArtistRebeccaLS

Other peoples’ stuff can be lovely too

Wearing a mask makes sense in most of the world right now. If you have a cold, do not cover your mask in Olbas Oil. I did that today and nearly passed out from the fumes!!

For a more sensible way to make yourself feel better, a new patterned mask can be just the tonic.

Original repeating (tessellated) patterns are tricky to design. It is great to see new creations let out into the world.

ArtistRebeccaLS has done a cracking job of it, as you can seen in this selection:

Other people’s stuff on RedBubble

At time of writing, NiciNeeNee has only 3 Plaid designs available on RedBubble.

Join me in encouraging this artist to create more of these!

I am a plaid-obsessed Bubbler. inspiration from artists like NiciNeeNee is great!

HTML for Tiled WordPress Galleries

Have you ever tried searching RedBubble for Fitted Masks? They are there. You can find them, only you can’t specifically search for them and only them. Frustrating.

A while ago I tried putting image galleries on WordPress for a selection of Fitted Masks – as a work around. Instead all I seemed to do was work, use up my WordPress media storage allowance, and fall behind every time I added a mask to RedBubble.

Then came my Link-Building obsession. Why not adapt my Link tool to output image galleries that use images direct from Redbubble?

So I hacked away at the RB Tool

Image
  1. Shop Name: It works for any RedBubble shop
  2. Art Search: Galleries work better for smaller selections
  3. Product: Get those pesky Fitted Masks here!

How did it turn out?

Lots and lots of fun. I pumped out a couple of galleries:

  1. The selections above gave me: Welsh Family Tartan Fitted Masks
  2. And a lovely Jigsaw Puzzle page

Next steps

Are you kidding? I am going to be going down the rabbit-hole with this one.

Apart from blasting out gallery pages for this site, I may even do some for other Bubblers (the name is going to catch on, I am sure).

If you want some image gallery code, send a Tweet with:

  1. Shop name?
  2. Art search words?
  3. Product to promote (eg. Fitted Mask)?
  4. Images across?
  5. Break after how many images?

Ok. This I should explain…

Images Across/Image Break

In the Welsh Mask example, I used Across 3 and Break 5, giving:

In the Jigsaw Puzzle example, I used Across 2 and Break 3, giving:
