Frequently Asked Questions About Membership
How is Civil Rights Defenders governed?
Civil Rights Defenders is an independent human rights organisation with no political or religious affiliation, registered as a Swedish non-profit association. As a non-profit association, we have a democratic governance model in which the organisation is made up of members who meet annually at our Annual General Meeting, the organisation’s highest decision-making body.
At the Annual General Meeting, members elect the Board of Directors, which is responsible for the organisation’s strategic direction, operations, and finances. The Board appoints the Executive Director, who in turn is responsible for the day-to-day management of the organisation and its staff.

What is the role of members in the association?
Members play a key role in ensuring that the organisation remains true to its mission and values as set out in our statutes. They do this by participating in the Annual General Meeting, where members, among other responsibilities, elect the Board of Directors, a Nomination Committee, and the organisation’s auditors.
What are the benefits of membership?
Members are part of the organisation’s governance through their participation in the Annual General Meeting, including the election of the Board of Directors. In addition, members receive regular newsletters, invitations to events such as the Civil Rights Defender of the Year Award ceremony, and the organisation’s Annual Report (digitally).
