What problem does this address?
Explore a new experiment for creating custom WordPress blocks from natural-language prompts, informed by the former Telex AI project from Automattic. The experiment should allow a user to describe what they want to build, then use the configured AI provider to determine the most appropriate implementation, such as a Pattern, Block Style, Block Variation, or Custom Block, and generate a usable result.
@georgestephanis has started exploring this concept in https://github.com/georgestephanis/ai-block-creator, which could serve as a useful starting point for bringing the idea into the WordPress AI plugin.
What is your proposed solution?
The initial goal is experimentation and learning, not a production-ready block-generation workflow:
- Add custom block creation as an opt-in experiment
- Accept a natural-language description of the desired block or experience
- Determine whether the request is best fulfilled as a Pattern, Block Style, Block Variation, or Custom Block
- Generate the necessary implementation and provide a way to preview/test the result
- Investigate whether George's existing work can be reused or adapted rather than starting from scratch
- Consider future integration with the AI Workspace or similar developer-focused AI tooling
