Related: #43241. Companion to #83122, which does the same for border and spacing.

What?

Adds shadow support to the Post Navigation Link block.

Why?

The block always renders its wrapper, even when there is no adjacent post, so a page can contain an empty <div class="wp-block-post-navigation-link">. That wrapper is zero pixels high, and a shadow on it paints as a coloured bar across the content area, from Global Styles and from a block instance value alike.

Removing the wrapper was rejected in #64258, so it stays and the shadow is withheld instead.

How?

shadow skips serialization. index.php applies the style engine output only when a link was rendered, and edit.jsx mirrors it with getShadowClassesAndStyles. Global Styles are scoped with a selectors entry using :not(:empty).

Two notes for reviewers:

  • No other block skips serialization to keep the styles on the same element, so this is a new use of the flag.
  • The editor always renders placeholder text, so it is never empty and always shows the shadow. The editor and the front end will differ for the first and last post.

Testing Instructions

You need three posts, so one has no previous post and one has no next post.

  1. Add a Post Navigation Link block set to Previous to your oldest post, and publish. Nothing renders on the front end, as before.
  2. Give that block a shadow. The front end still shows nothing. The editor shows the shadow, because it always renders placeholder text.
  3. Do the same on a post that does have an adjacent post. The shadow wraps the whole block, arrow included, in the editor and on the front end.
  4. Set a shadow in Global Styles under Blocks > Post Navigation Link. Links that render get it, empty wrappers do not, and a block level shadow still wins.

The other blocks in this batch already had padding. This one has neither (#64258 is still open), so the shadow sits tight against one line of text with no way to give it room, Deep especially.

Worth waiting on #64258?

We can add the shadows as intended, which is great. However, we can’t add enough spacing between the text and shadow, which may limit customisation and affect readability for users. Perhaps we can explore a way to add a bit more flexibility here.

Tested locally, and works as intended.✅

  • Global styles shadow applies to core/post-navigation-link in both editor and frontend at the default viewport. ✅
  • Editing block styles in the inspector overwrite all, in both the editor and frontend. ✅
  • Tested Responsive Styles. ✅ (Tested the "Unset" shadow option on the mobile viewport)

It is fine to land the shadow supports early as they are both very simple and not exposed by default. (Similar to home-link)

@shail-mehta and @im3dabasia I've had to rework the approach in this PR so that we skipped serialization to account for the possibility of the block rendering and empty div. There's more history in #64258 and #83122.

If you have time, this will need a full review from start to finish.

Tested locally, and it works as intended. ✅

  • The Global Styles shadow applies to core/post-navigation-link in both the editor and frontend at the default viewport. ✅
  • A block-level shadow overrides the Global Styles shadow in both the editor and frontend. ✅
  • Empty wrappers remain in the markup but show no shadow on the frontend. ✅
  • Valid links show shadows in both the editor and frontend. ✅
  • Tested Responsive Styles using the “Unset” shadow option on the mobile viewport. ✅
