version 16.0.0: audioreactive effect jerkiness on esp32 (ESP-32D) #5724

Closed

Description

@jvilhuber

What happened?

I installed 16.0.0 (and then 16.0.1) onto my trusty esp-32D (it doesn't say WROOM on the casing), which worked great with 0.15.4 (4m-S I think was the image), and since then the audioreactiv mode seems sluggish or jerky, not smooth.

To Reproduce Bug

Load 16.0.0 ESP32.bin (or ESP32_DEBUG) onto the device, and start an audio reactive effect. Mine:

{"on":true,"bri":128,"transition":7,"mainseg":0,"seg":[{"id":0,"start":0,"stop":78,"grp":1,"spc":0,"of":0,"on":true,"frz":false,"bri":255,"cct":127,"set":0,"n":"Long","col":[[255,170,0],[0,0,0],[0,0,0]],"fx":137,"sx":128,"ix":128,"pal":0,"c1":18,"c2":48,"c3":16,"sel":true,"rev":false,"mi":false,"o1":false,"o2":false,"o3":false,"si":0,"m12":2},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0},{"stop":0}],"ledmap":0}

Play some music and watch the previously smooth flow of color be all jerky

Expected Behavior

Smooth flow of color across the segment.

Install Method

Binary from WLED.me

What version of WLED?

16.0.1

Which microcontroller/board are you seeing the problem on?

ESP32

    "4m-S" sounds like a moon modules build. It has much more advanced audio processing. We are working on bringing some of it upstream.

    yes, confirmed. "4m-S" is part of a WLED-MM firmware filename.

    Edit:

    Mode 3 (DOUT), speed 40 MHz.

    Besides WLED-MM audioreactive being almost 3 years ahead of "vanilla WLED", the slow flash speed might contribute to "jerkiness".
    Also you might want to increase "Target FPS" in LEDs & Hardware settings, this will help the Freqwav effect to look more like flowing.

    Yes I was coming from MM, but was trying to come back to mainline.

    Oddly, the jerkiness went away after a while. No idea why (no change, except maybe one of the reboots?).
