Today’s Brief

Sponsored by Stonecastle

A spotlight on cash: Doing good with deposits. Cash is called “king” because it provides security, liquidity and flexibility – and remains the foundation of financial decisions. Today, more than $18 trillion in cash sits in US bank accounts, alongside more than $8 trillion in money market funds. This scale underscores the importance of cash and its potential for impact. StoneCastle was founded to drive deposits to community banks that strengthen local communities. Today our network includes more than 1,000 financial institutions, including community banks, MDIs, CDFIs and credit unions. We believe cash can do more than sit on the sidelines. When directed to institutions serving communities, it can help support small businesses and their workers, housing, agriculture and infrastructure priorities.

The Week’s Spotlight

Public bid to acquire social film network Letterboxd is a preview of people power. In the wake of Paramount’s contentious merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, a different kind of M&A campaign is picking up steam, presenting community ownership as a viable alternative to continued media consolidation and, frankly, enshittification. This week, a coalition of filmmakers, fans and mission-driven investors launched Letterboxd4All, a public campaign to buy Letterboxd, the popular social platform for film lovers, and convert it into a community-owned company. “Our campaign is a reflection of people’s frustration at seeing value extracted from their communities,” said Elizabeth Joyce of Intrinsic Entertainment Collaborative, the public benefit corporation behind the bid. “Our model offers communities the chance to be the owner, not the product.”
