Reimagining a Graham Classic: Acrobats of God

The Company is also reconstructing Martha Graham’s Acrobats of God (1960), a witty, lighthearted work that has been absent from the repertory for 50 years. Featuring music by Carlos Surinach and designs by Isamu Noguchi, the production revisits rarely seen work while opening new possibilities for its interpretation.

Xin Ying and Lloyd Knight will alternate in Graham’s original leading role. Casting a male dancer in a role Graham created for herself is a significant artistic departure, inviting fresh perspectives on gender, tradition, and the continuing evolution of Graham’s repertory.

Celebrating 20 Years of Lamentation Variations

First created in 2007 in response to Martha Graham’s iconic 1930 solo Lamentation, the Lamentation Variations project invites contemporary artists to create original works inspired by Graham’s choreography and artistic spirit. For the 2027 Joyce Theater season, the Company celebrates the project’s 20th anniversary with new Variations by four distinctive artistic voices.

Rashid Johnson, with choreography by Claudia Schreier – Acclaimed visual artist and filmmaker Rashid Johnson brings his multidisciplinary vision to a bold collaboration with choreographer Claudia Schreier. Working across painting, sculpture, installation, film, and performance, Johnson offers a fresh perspective on the possibilities of movement and the intersection of artistic disciplines.

Shawn Ahern – Choreographer and director Shawn Ahern, whose work spans dance, opera, theater, and film, will create a new Variation set to music by electro-acoustic duo Live Footage.

Pam Tanowitz – Known for her formal, abstract choreography drawing on ballet and Cunningham technique, Tanowitz brings a distinctive movement vocabulary to Graham’s dramatic legacy. Her previous work with the Company includes Untitled (Souvenir), created for the Martha Graham Dance Company’s 90th anniversary season.

Lar Lubovitch – Celebrated for a choreographic career spanning more than six decades, Lubovitch brings his signature fluidity, musicality, and lyricism to the project. His previous work with the Company, The Legend of Ten, reflects his enduring artistic connection to Graham.
