Tangent Developable

A tangent developable of a curve y is a ruled surface M for which M can be parameterized by x(u,v)=y(u)+vy^'(u). A tangent developable is a developable surface.

For example, the circular helix

 y(u)=(rcosu,rsinu,cu),

where r>0 and c!=0, generates the tangent developable

 x(u,v)=(rcosu-rvsinu,rsinu+rvcosu,c(u+v)),

where u and v range over the real numbers (Gray 1997). For fixed u, varying v traces the tangent line to the helix at y(u), and setting v=0 recovers the helix. This surface is distinct from the helicoid, whose rulings are horizontal lines rather than tangent lines to the helix.
