“The power of the arts, writers, performers, artists is evident in so far that these are the voices that are often the first to be silenced or unfunded. They’re silenced not because they lack relevance or importance but on the contrary because they hold power to evoke a response or action”

—Allyson Haug, The Discovery Group, Panto Partner

The Christopher Wootten Fund

The Christopher Wootten Fund is a new fund that will specifically support the work and residencies that take place on the Christopher Wootten Stage.

Christopher Wootten founded the Vancouver East Cultural Centre in 1973 and served as its Executive Director until 1982. His dedication and passion for the arts established a strong foundation for what has become a beloved Vancouver institution. The Cultch, as it was affectionately named by Christopher’s wife Libby, is the legacy of a visionary person who gathered like-minded people around him to create a space filled with possibilities.

From its earliest days, The Cultch has been a place to experience some of the city’s most compelling and diverse performance. It has grown into a safe and welcoming space for bold, unconventional work that challenges audiences and pushes boundaries.

“When we first started, we were addressing a real need in the city. There weren’t independent performance spaces, so this place was geared to address the needs of local theatre companies and music and dance. It was political and progressive, what we were trying to be.”
