TG-Data is mandated by the IPCC Panel to provide guidance and coordination on data and scenario-related matters to the Working Groups, their Technical Support Units, the Data Distribution Centre, and the IPCC Secretariat. The Task Group contributes to coherence, consistency, transparency, and traceability across IPCC data-related activities throughout the assessment cycle, operating as an advisory and oversight body. While TG-Data’s engagement spans the full assessment cycle, the Task Group is particularly engaged with Working Groups during the early stages of the assessment process. At this stage, support is crucial to coordinate data and knowledge management needs of the Working Groups with downstream functions of the Data Distribution Centre related to curation, access, and long-term preservation.
TG-Data members were selected during the 69th Session of the IPCC (Geneva, Switzerland, 2 July 2025). The Task Group members are:

TG-Data’s structured workplan for the seventh assessment cycle provides an overarching framework for TG-Data activities across the assessment cycle, with the objective of ensuring coherence, complementarity, and efficient use of resources. The workplan is organized around four pillars:
Pillar 1: Strategic coordination and oversight of the DDC system.
Under this pillar, TG-Data supports oversight and strategic coordination of the Data Distribution Centre, with a focus on coherence, continuity, and sustainability of the federated DDC system throughout the seventh assessment cycle. Activities include coordination across DDC partners, identification and management of cross cutting issues and risks, and structured dialogue with DDC institutions. This work is undertaken in close liaison with the Working Group Bureaus and the IPCC Secretariat to ensure alignment with assessment needs and institutional processes.
Pillar 2: Data management support to Working Groups.
This pillar focuses on guidance and coordination on data and knowledge management in support of Working Groups and their Technical Support Units across the seventh assessment cycle. TG-Data aims to facilitate consistent consideration of data management throughout assessment workflows, contributing to transparency, traceability, and long-term usability of IPCC assessment outputs.
Pillar 3: Outreach and dissemination.
Under this pillar, TG-Data supports outreach and dissemination related to IPCC data products beyond core assessment processes, including contributing to capacity building in the use of IPCC data and scenarios, particularly in developing and transition-economy regions, in line with its Terms of Reference. Activities are undertaken in coordination with the Data Distribution Centre, Technical Support Units, and with the support of the IPCC Secretariat, with the objective of supporting broader understanding, accessibility, and informed reuse of IPCC data resources over the course of the seventh assessment cycle and beyond.
Pillar 4: Strategic partnerships and external engagement.
This pillar covers TG-Data’s strategic engagement with relevant external organizations, initiatives, and networks dealing with data, within the scope of the IPCC process. Such engagement aims to support data stability, accessibility, long-term preservation, and sustained institutional capacity, and to ensure alignment with Working Group needs across the assessment cycle.
The Data Distribution Centre (DDC) provides climate, socio-economic and environmental data for past and future scenarios. The following institutions currently act as DDC partners:
Instituto de Física de Cantabria / Spanish National Research Council, Spain
The Instituto de Física de Cantabria (IFCA) and Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) supports the development, hosting, and long-term availability of IPCC digital and interactive products, including the Working Group I Interactive Atlas and associated datasets.
Centre for Environmental Data Analysis, UK
The Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA) supports data management and curation activities for WGI authors and establishes infrastructure to enable data citation.
German Meteorological Service, Germany
The German Meteorological Service (DWD), in collaboration with the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ), provides development and operation of technical infrastructure for the DDC database including data storage, compilation and processing of CMIP and CORDEX data used mainly by WGI and recording and entering of associated metadata.
Center for Integrated Earth System Information, USA
The Center for Integrated Earth System Information (CIESIN) supports the curation and documentation of data for the Special Report on Climate Change and Cities (SRCities), and contributes to the development of the SRCities Digital Case Study Gallery.
