I have, after two years, allowed myself to talk about my experiences with AI madness again, this time with the benefit of speaking to people all around the world, including Fortune 500 executives. This one is on my regular blog for casual readers, and cross-posted to the company blog if you need to share this with someone and have it look official.

“Very few companies are so good at shipping software that they can afford the extra risk profile.” (of #AI)

On 10 March 2021, I had only just fallen asleep when my phone started buzzing. Then another notification, and another. In a matter of minutes, 142 of my servers went up in the clouds. And not the cloud-computing kind.
Most of them were physically going up in a column of smoke in Strasbourg.
My wife looked at me and asked if I wanted a coffee. I nodded. It was going to be a very long day.
At EuroBSDCon 2026, I won't be giving a theoretical lecture on high availability. Instead, I’m going to tell the raw story of that night: the emergency recovery, the architectural choices that actually saved us, and the ones that crumbled under pressure (because we rarely talk about what fails).
Most of all, I’ll explain why that night changed my perspective, and why I’ve come to see BSD systems not just as operating systems, but as essential, practical tools for building simpler, more resilient infrastructure.
The official schedule is now live. If you want to hear a real-world post-mortem, join me on Saturday, 12 Sept at 11:15 (Room D.0.02).

This Wednesday is the "EU Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis"
10,000 more people in Europe have just been added to that sad toll
European governments and the EU are still not doing enough to slow the climate crisis, or to protect vulnerable people from the disasters already coming
The #exim project got it right (emphasis mine):

Reports we believe are LLM generated will either be rejected outright or if thought to be plausible will be credited to the unnamed and uncredited authors whose works were ingested as the training corpus.
1. de prijzen gaan omhoog om het inkomenverlies te compenseren;

Open source projects will tell you they have no choice but to allow slop, because doing anything else is a form of gatekeeping that will exclude too many potential contributors.
Nothing could be further than the truth, though. When the review queue is a non-stop machine gun of giant, bogus drive-by patches, the good contributions will inevitably fall through the cracks.
Eventually, the contributors you actually want—those who care about the long-term health of the code base, building institutional knowledge, improving their craft, mentorship—will simply leave, because they will realize their limited time and energy is better spent elsewhere.
A blanket ban on LLM contributions is not impractical, idealistic, or too radical—it's just common sense.
FreeBSD hacker. Has been known to touch pf and lived to regret it.
Strong opinions on bikes and the need to crush all cars into tiny cubes. More strong opinions about bullshit machines.
Rather foolishly volunteered to run EuroBSDCon 2026 in Brussels.
Ceterum autem censeo FTP esse delendam.
