The United States has one of the highest costs of healthcare in the world. In 2023, U.S. healthcare spending reached $4.3 trillion. Experts believe that by applying information technology more effectively cost of care can be reduced and quality of care can be improved. There is a strong push for smarter usage of IT and engaging IT personnel in health care.
The Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP) trains the future leaders of this emerging and innovative field by partnering with several top-ranked academic units on UNC campus including information and library science, computer science, public health, biostatistics, medicine, nursing, dentistry, data science and society and pharmacy.

The deadline for Fall 2026 applications for the MPS and PhD programs have passed. The application for Spring 2027 (MPS only) and Fall 2027 (MPS and PhD) will open in August.
The Carolina Health Informatics Program trains diverse leaders in the biomedical and health informatics field who will advance cutting-edge scholarship to improve efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery, access, and outcomes.
The MPS BMHI is a 35-credit, non-thesis degree program available online or on-campus and can be completed in as little as 1 year. Students learn about health information systems, such as electronic health records (EHRs), tools for data management and the value of data insights to improve patient care and healthcare operations.
The PhD in Health Informatics program prepares students for careers in research and instruction as well as leadership roles in the industry. The program supports an active research community and strong connections to the thriving biomedical and health informatics industry in Research Triangle Park, NC.
Dr. Saif Khairat is a Professor of Nursing and Core CHIP faculty member. He is also the Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Center for Virtual Care Value and Equity (ViVE) and the Director of the multi-million dollar Carolina Applied Informatics Research Lab (CAIR). His research focuses on virtual care to advance the availability of quality health care.
