It's in the low 30s (Celsius) here all week, which feels like go to the movies time, but honestly... there's nothing on? I don't think of myself as super picky about movies, but the selection is just bleak, and I don't think it's been a lot better for much of the year. (Also it's a pain to get out to the only cinema with subtitles, to then face a 40% chance of the subtitles actually working).

Haven't seen any of the others, and this doesn't seem like a good place to start.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Didn't like this plot in the comics, haven't seen the last several Spider-Man movies.

There are a couple movies I would have liked to see on the big screen, notably the lesbian Metis coming of age story Blood Lines, but we either didn't get it, or I blinked and missed the two days it was showing. It's basically impossible to see Canadian movies unless they're a very rare breakout, or they ship without subtitles, or you're in a city big enough to have an art house cinema. I by myself cannot afford to support the whole industry, and even when they do show up here, it's a depressing sitting in an nearly empty auditorium experience.

I'm genuinely happy that the horror fans are having the year of their lives, and I don't want to add to the hand wringing about the squeamish having nothing to see, but :(

This is kind of a random comparison, but I was born in 1979.

I wonder if television for people born around 1945-1950 was how computers and internet were for people born around 1975-1980.

Okay, a somewhat inaccurate comparison, the internet didn't become common until I was 15-20, and television would have been common when that generation was in their elementary school years. So maybe more like 1980-1985?

But how it went from being this obscure, fancy piece of technology you only caught glimpses of, to being something that was everywhere and that everyone was using.

Greetings from a treehouse above a burbling river! We are on vacation as of last evening, when we arrived at our destination, which means I'm eating vacation things (pie! All the pie!) but also getting lots of steps (hiking and walking and rambling around various sites/museums). I just finished yoga and a strength-training session, too, because I need routines or I'll turn into a motionless spherical mass by the end of the week.

Seriously, I *always* gain weight on vacation. So, I have a plan to make sure it doesn't get too bad. I find that making such plans helps me to actually stick to them (go figure). Recognizing that mine is a method not perfect for everyone, I'm wondering what you do to stick to your goals when you're confronted with a surfeit of temptation.

As usual, please don't feel obligated to share, but if you'd like, we're here to listen and not judge. :-)

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (and I trust them far more than random opinions on the internet), it's perfectly okay to use 'grey' water on your garden.

Plants can be watered with shower, bath, kitchen and washing machine water (from rinse cycles), collectively referred to as ‘grey’ water. It varies in quality and may contain contaminants such as soap and detergent. Fortunately, soil and potting composts are effective at filtering them out, and the residues can sometimes act as a mild fertiliser.

There's more detail in the article, but I'm happy to say we've been doing this ever since the hot weather started - it's definitely helping our lawn and plants stay alive.

We're backing it up with occasional hosepipe when we don't have enough dish-washing water, but I feel guild free about the hosepipe.

Why? Because according to our water bill, the national average water consumption per day is 373L for a three person household (and I'm not even counting the three days a week we have a grandchild with us)

Our total water consumption is 106L per day.

A third of that average.

How do we do it?

Mostly:

1. Only shower if you actually need it. (Which can be a surprisingly long time if you only wear natural fibres)

2. SHORT shower, not ten minutes!

3. Only wash clothes when they are actually dirty, rather than just chucking them in the laundry basket by reflex. Look; sniff? Can they do more days? If they are natural fibres, the answer is usually 'yes'.

When I went to Leticia in April, I brought some presents, and one of them, for my tutor, was this book, Todo el mundo, a Spanish-language translation of All the World (2009).

I'm gratified to say that my tutor loved the words and pictures as much as I do. She read the title and immediately translated it into Ticuna. And then she paged through the book.

"Beautiful," she said. "I'm going to translate it into Ticuna."

And my friends, she did.

I am so, so excited about this! I told her I will try to get it published, with her as the translator. I have a small press in mind; I have the author's agent's information bookmarked.

It would be so, so wonderful, if there could be a Ticuna-language edition of this book. (I mean, best of all would be Ticuna-authored and -illustrated books in Ticuna, but there's room for good things that aren't the best thing.)

I do recognize and honor the fact that Ticuna has basically been an oral language for a culture that passes stories and knowledge orally. But I believe you can maintain those traditions and also utilize and enjoy the technology of writing when you want. The world is wide and deep, and I would love to make picture books in Ticuna a thing in this wide, deep world.

The Mariners finally played a decent game last night. So that was fun.

I remembered to print out some things I'd been holding on to until I got the printer situation better. The new printer is sooooooo perfect. Now I probably won't need or want to print anything for a month but I don't care. I do need a new stand for it. Ordered and will arrive today BUT not til this afternoon. It requires assembly. I now know not to try assembly in the afternoon. Tomorrow morning will be fine.

My friend, Steve, left a cucumber and some beans on my shelf yesterday and I made a delicious salad out of them. I need to stop at the grocery today. He always leaves the beans in one of those tiny plastic bags so I am going to pick up a box of them and leave it on his shelf.

It's house cleaner day, too. I think I'll do the grocery run while she's here working.

I just fell into an Instagram hole. I do not have the time or patience to sit through an entire haircut. One second of 'before' and 2 seconds of 'after' would work fine. About half of the 'life hacks' are a mystery to me. I cannot fathom what problem they are trying to solve or what the solution actually is. Clearly not the target audience. But, that's ok. I do not need to know everything.

Apparently certain models of LG monitors download control panel software to Windows PC when you hook them up. The monitor instructs Windows Update to install software that prompts you to install McAfee Anti-Virus. Gotta suck up that sweet, sweet third-party money that's unrelated to selling monitors!

This behavior has been identified across multiple models of monitors, going back at least two years to 2024. While the adware installation is installed with more freedom than the typical Microsoft Store sandboxed app, it is not installing as an admin-level app and is not engaging in any file-stealing/malware-type behavior. So there's that, I guess. And it can be uninstalled.

The solution, of course, would be for LG to release a BIOS update for their monitors to reflash them and remove this Windows Update install. But of course that's not going to happen.

Personally, I've always preferred ViewSonic monitors, I've been using them for literally 30 years. But I'm not in the ultra-high montitor demographic.

This week is my son Mason's birthday week and so, as part of that, I've been stopping at our favorite coffee shop every morning to pick him up his favorite coffee drink (a meil, a honeyed latte.) Claddagh, the coffee shop, often has a little notebook on the counter near where people wait to pick up their finished drinks. Today's question FASCINATED me and so I will share it with you all.

What inedible thing would you want to eat?

Sample answer: grout beause it looks like marshmellow fluff. I thought about this for a long time, actually. Eventually I settled on stryofoam because it looks like it ought to have the flavor and texture of those rice cakes everyone used to eat in the 1990s. (Remember those? I secretly liked them.) I asked Shawn this and she also pondered it for a long time and decided on foaming handsoap because it looks like forbidden milk froth. While she was considering her answer, I also posited packing peanuts might be another one since they already look like that orange circus candy, only white. She suggested that maybe packing peanuts would have the taste and mouthfeel of some kind of white cheddar version of Cheetos.

So what about you? Anything to add to this weird little question?

Taken around 1650 from Latin exiguus, same meaning, but also and originally meaning strict/exact, from exigere, which has many meanings, including to demand and to drive out, the relevant one being to measure against a standard -- so the image is just this much and no more. Let us begin with the ways in which modern technology corporations create digital poppets of us and then use those poppets for their own nefarious ends, while also selling our poppets and the use of them to government actors who do not have our best interests at heart. The work of getting people out from under those poppets is long and terrible. Sometimes, though, you can do perfectly fine just by using the protocols that have been there this entire time, instead of being inside a walled garden with a corporate wrapper over the protocol. The Ageless Linux project, which reads the statutory language of California's Digital Age Assurance Act, and will produce an operating system and devices running an operating system, that will be in flagrant violation thereof, because the law is not about child safety, it is about building regulatory moats and engaging in mass surveillance.
