Excerpt from the article: The links between environmental issues and (actually existing) socialism are complex. Socialism has sometimes been described as necessarily destructive to the environment. And one can find examples of this across the history of socialist movements and states. But there have also been convergences, examples of socialism working together with the protection of the environment.
One example of both the contradictions and unity of socialism and environmental concerns is the USSR. As John Bellamy Foster writes:
“From an ecological perspective, the USSR can be seen as a society that generated some of the worst ecological catastrophes in history but that also gave birth to some of the most profound ecological ideas and practices, based on materialist, dialectical, and socialist intellectual foundations.”[2]
There is on the one hand, the predominance of Lysenko’s [Soviet biologist who rejected genetics as bourgeois, KP] pseudoscientific thought, based on a dogmatic reading of Engels’ Dialectics of Nature, the draining of the Aral Sea, and there is on the other hand, the zapodedniki [state nature reserves in the USSR, KP], zones “of relatively pristine nature, set apart for scientific research”,[3] the Great Plan for the Transformation of Nature, which tried to restore forests “as a grand attempt to reverse anthropogenic regional climate change in deforested areas”[4], and a great number of ecological thinkers from early to late soviet ecology.
