I lurk. I read. Every now and then I feel motivated to write.
I am an impractical person because I care about climate change and social justice type things and over the last decade I've almost completely lost my sense of humor. I try to moderate my newfound cringe earnestness with genuinely working to make the world a little better. The social justice part does not come easily, and I've found that almost all of my first reactions are a product of sheltered whiteness. But I'm in my 40s now, and those first reactions were in my teens and 20s, and I have had time to listen to good people and pay attention and learn how to apologize and learn how to teach others. I enthusiastically go to sensitivity trainings and I realize that the world keeps changing, and language especially keep evolving defensively, and other people's lives is not a space where I get to sit complacently.
I am a practical person, and that is why I majored in something as useful as Classical Studies (Latin, ancient Greek, and the related cultures). I work in a library. I belong to a union. I garden in the city. I love to travel, but I'll also host travelers in my house (through couchsurfing, not airbnb).

Please do not use my real name or image on livejournal (or the rest of the non-email internet). I realise that trying to maintain privacy/anonymity is a losers' game, but I'd at lease like to make things a little bit difficult.
- if you use my real name in a comment to me in my journal, I shall screen it and probably not reply.
- if you use my real name to refer to me on someone else's journal, I shall not reply.
- this does not mean that anyone should reply to such comments and "speak for me" to explain that I do not like that useage, because that is still an acknowledgment of the connection.
- if you chose to post a picture of me and either label it with my real name, my live journal name, or some portion of either, I will consider that a breach of trust. If you are taking my picture, I usually take the time to discuss my boundaries with you - but always feel free to ask on this one.
