“Under the stones, lizards lie to time,
dreaming of a fragment of eternity…”
To Yuuki, Ryu, Yoshie. 2015, through the eyes of the present.
"A Spring Diary" is an album originally written during the first major lockdown in Italy, between March and May 2020. It is not, however, an album about the pandemic: it comes instead from an earlier time, a time to which that forced and unexpected suspension had brought me back.
In March 2020, the days passed in silence. One evening, while searching through drawers and bookshelves looking for some distraction, I came across an old iPod. As I scrolled through the saved files, a series of photographs unexpectedly resurfaced — photographs taken five years earlier by my son, who in 2015 was only two years old. The reappearance of those images suddenly brought that period back to me.
In 2015, my family and I had gone through a difficult and uncertain period. I do not remember one dominant emotion, but rather a constant alternation of different states: doubt, regret, hope, fear. At times we searched for positive signs in every small gesture, trying to find reassurance in the words of others; at other times a silent resignation would emerge, or a heavier feeling whenever uncertainty became difficult to bear.
When I wrote "A Spring Diary" in 2020, those events were already behind us. The greatest concerns of 2015 had changed over time, leaving room for a different awareness that had matured with distance.
"A Spring Diary" was born from the unexpected resurfacing of those memories. It retraces that spring suspended between melancholy and a constant tension, between the consolation of the past and something that was never entirely resolved, but transformed.
It is not a spring being told: it is a spring that sometimes returns. And now it is here again, in this new remastered edition, six years after the original version.
I have always thought of "A Spring Diary" as an essential step in my path: it is the first full album of unreleased material I ever published and, at the same time, an important turning point. The music contained in "A Spring Diary" still carries strong traces of what came before, while introducing elements that would later define the direction of my work as a composer.
For this reason, despite being my first album of unreleased material, I have never truly seen it as a starting point, but rather as a threshold that has now, in this new version, finally taken physical form.

Barrico is probably my favorite author, and this wonderful music is going to make me enjoy even more reading his books.
Thank you so much for this quiet and beautiful score ! ♫
