UC Ground Floor Makerspace Policies
Mission
Our mission is to empower creative problem solvers. We accomplish this by providing training, access to shared equipment, and resources from ideation to creation. We support a broad spectrum of adult makers pursuing projects including academic, research, entrepreneurial, and personal in nature.
We offer three core services: membership, experiential making programs, and prototyping services. Through these offerings we aim to empower transformation for our city and region through low-cost access to a comprehensive community workshop.

Membership Eligibility
Access to any of the shops requires an active membership. The Ground Floor Makerspace is open to all makers, entrepreneurs, and hobbyists 18 years old and above.
Membership includes access to the most advanced makerspace in the region including:
- 30+ programs including Introductions, Equipment Certifications, and Make-and-Take Workshops.
- 12,000 square feet of prototyping and fabrication equipment.
- A highly skilled team of engineers, designers, and artisans to advise and train you.
Current UC students, faculty, staff, and 1819 Building Partners qualify for zero cost membership. Alumni of UC are eligible for a student membership until one year past their graduation date. Graduates of the Venture Lab pre-accelerator are eligible for membership up to one year after graduating the program.
Alumni more than one year past graduation must purchase a monthly membership.
Membership fees are charged at the beginning of the month and will continue indefinitely until membership is cancelled.
UC Community:
Zero cost Membership is available to current UC students, faculty, staff, as well as CID/1819 Building Partners and participants in the Venture Lab that are awarded funding within one year of graduating the program.

Shop Policies
- Weapon making is prohibited. No weapons, components of weapons, or weapon-like items are permitted in The Ground Floor Makerspace. This includes defensive, offensive, and simulated weapons. If you aren’t sure what constitutes a weapon, please consult ORC 2923.11. Anyone attempting to use the resources of The Ground Floor Makerspace to produce weapons will be banned for life. Period.
- Equipment Certification is informative, fun, and mandatory. The certification schedule is publicly available on our member portal. Even if you have used a piece of equipment in another shop, you must participate in our trainings to access to our equipment.
- Safety is paramount. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are properly trained to use the equipment before beginning work. If you are unsure of how to use a piece of equipment, ask a staff member. If a piece of equipment appears to be out of order, or not operating correctly, bring it to the attention of staff immediately. Always plan your work to minimize potential risk to yourself and others.
- Clean up after yourself. A clean shop is an accessible shop. Put away tools, sweep off equipment, and stow scrap materials in the proper locations.
- Any VOC emitting materials must be used in the spray booth. Use of any products such as paints, lacquers, polyurethanes, oils, etc. as well as adhesives or solvents that emit VOC must be done in the spray booth.
- Projects are not to be left in the shop overnight without a parking ticket. See the technicians on duty to get a temporary storage parking ticket.
- Techs are here to help! They’re here to answer questions, bounce ideas off, and recommend sources for materials and hardware. However, they’re not here to build you project for you, engineer your device, or clean up after you.
- Plan ahead! Walk-ins are always welcome, however, we have a busy calendar. Shops are periodically closed for classes or events. Most of our equipment areas are reservable. Please check the booking schedule on our member portal to ensure availability.
- Prototyping is not Production. Our additive and subtractive prototyping services are intended for proof-of-concept, and low volume prototyping. We are not a production machine shop or additive service bureau. We reserve the right to determine if a project is a fit for our services. If we determine we are not the right fit, we are happy to recommend some local partners that may be able to help.

Members of the public and alumni more than six months past graduation can purchase a monthly membership. UC students on Co-op must also have an employer sponsored monthly membership to pursue company work in the Ground Floor Makerspace.
Membership fees are charged at the beginning of the month and will continue indefinitely until membership is cancelled.

Project Consultations
All Members may schedule project-specific consultations with our team using the Schedule a Consultation link on the Member Portal. Availability is dependent on staff availability and expertise.
Service Rates
Hourly rates for additive and machining services are determined by the nature of the relationship and purpose of the project.

Equipment Policies
Access
Access to the Ground Floor Makerspace is a privilege and not a right.
Equipment at the UC Ground Floor Makerspace is divided into four different levels of access. Level 1 represents the lowest level of risk, and level 4 is the highest. All access requires an active Membership.
· Level 1 equipment is considered Low risk. No training is required. This equipment includes hand tools, computers, and battery-operated power tools.
· Level 2 equipment is considered Moderate risk. Training is required. This equipment includes corded hand-held power tools, laser cutters, pneumatic tools, and benchtop power tools.
· Level 3 equipment is considered high risk. Training is required. This equipment includes powerful portable and light industrial tools such as welders and saws.
· Level 4 equipment is considered highest risk. Training is required. This equipment includes heavy industrial CNC and material handling equipment that are operated by staff only.
Our equipment list is searchable by area, required certification, and several other criteria. Each level of access is paired with appropriate instruction that ranges from self-guided tutorials to hands-on staff lead training. Levels 1+2 provide access to certain tools in the Prototyping Lab. Levels 3+4 provide access to a range of equipment in the Fabrication Lab. Certain equipment, such as industrial CNC machining centers and the waterjet cutter, are operated only by trained staff. The levels of access are not necessarily linear; users are encouraged to seek the training that is most relevant to them. For example, one can acquire access to Level 1 and Level 3 tools, without completing training on some Level 2 tools. Equipment certifications are recorded electronically and will remain active for up to five (5) years. Renewal of certifications may require repeating the certification. Renewals will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Reservations
Makerspace Members may book access to specific areas using the Schedule Your Visit / Reserve Equipment link on the Member Portal. When logged in, members will only see booking availability for equipment for which they are certified. While walk-ins are always welcome, we encourage all members to book equipment in advance to ensure availability.
Programs
Tours
Weekly public tours provide new and prospective members a high-level overview of our operations and resources. Tours are open to all. See the schedule here or contact member services to schedule.
Introductions
A lightweight introduction to a process or technology. May include hands-on software or material component. These are intended as informative primers to ensure member success in new technologies.
Certifications
Equipment certifications provide brief introductions to a manufacturing process or group of equipment covering necessary safety training and instructions for basic use. Certification is required regardless of prior experience. Time commitments vary by offering from 60 – 120 minutes per session. Some groups of certifications are sequential, Ex. Woodshop A, Woodshop B; Metal shop A, MIG Welding, TIG Welding.
Workshops
Workshops walk participants through one or more certification while also making a predetermined object. Workshops meet for two or more sessions. These are designed for users that want a more experiential learning opportunity. Materials fees, if applicable, must be paid in-person at the first meeting.
Community Builds
Collaborative, experimental, complex builds lead by talented staff to create one or a small batch of items. Community builds give our community a chance to work alongside our staff while we learn together. These making experiences are highly experiential for members and staff alike.
Machine + Tool Maintenance
If you find a maintenance issue with a machine, please report it to a staff member immediately. Do not try and fix it yourself! To prevent mistakes and maintain machine integrity, we also do not permit members to perform maintenance including:
· Change planer blades
· Change jointer blades
· Change band saw blades
· Change laser lenses
· Empty dust collector
· Sharpen edge tools such as chisels, planes, or wood lathe tools
· Install software on any computer, screen, or other public device
Damage to Equipment
Normal wear and tear is a fact of life. If a machine malfunctions or is damaged while in use, please notify our staff immediately and they will be happy to help remedy the situation. However, if it determined that damages are caused by misuse or negligence we maintain a “you break it, you buy it” replacement policy for common items.
Materials + Project Storage
Lockers and armored carts are available for rent. Projects that require temporary storage require a parking ticket signed by a staff member. Nothing may be stored on or under the worktables without prior approval.
Raw materials and glue-ups may be stored under tables or on the cantilever shelves or panel racks ONLY if accompanied by a project parking permit. Project parking permits for 24 hours can be given out by any staff member in the relevant lab/shop. Anything stored in the shop (excluding lockers) for longer than 24 hours will need approval by the shop’s respective Technician.
The Makerspace is not responsible for procuring, transporting, or handling members’ materials, including bulk material orders. Members undertaking large or material-intensive projects must consult with Makerspace staff prior to placing any orders. Members arranging delivery of materials to the Makerspace must follow the “Material Procurement SOP” and receive advance approval from Makerspace staff before any shipment is sent to 1819. All delivered materials must be received and managed by the member and must comply with the storage policies outlined above.
We assume no responsibility for member materials stored in our facility. Please see front desk staff for more information.
Member Portal
The Makerspace Member Portal (makerspace.uc.edu) enables members to schedule programs such as certifications and workshops, reserve equipment, schedule consultations with staff, and manage their member profile. All users are required to use either their UC login or create a local account in our member portal in order to access their profile.
Payment Policy
Monthly memberships are billed via saved credit card automatically at the beginning of the month. Monthly members must pay for all goods and services at the time of service. Credit cards are the only accepted form of payment for these items.
UC Researchers, departments, and student clubs using UC administered funds are billed internally at the beginning of the month. We do not accept credit cards (including University purchasing cards, or P-cards) for payment. Click for more information regarding Internal Billing.
Using and Borrowing Tools
Users are permitted to borrow up to five tools while working in the labs. Tools are not permitted to leave the premises, ever. All tools checked out must be returned to the tool crib when the work is completed or by the close of business, whichever comes first.
Hazardous Materials
All new materials must be vetted by Makerspace staff before they can be used in the labs. SDS sheets must be provided for all non-approved materials. Materials identified by their SDS as hazardous will be evaluated by makerspace staff for appropriateness to our space.
- All flammable materials must be stored in a fireproof cabinet.
- All corrosive materials must be stored in a corrosive materials cabinet
- All aerosol use and spray finishing, regardless of material being sprayed, must be done in the spray booth.
Hazardous waste includes things like uncured resin, used solvents, light bulbs, ink, oil, batteries, and other things that don’t belong in a landfill. All solvents must be disposed of in solvent recovery cans. Non-flammable hazardous materials should be bagged and labeled then placed in the large bin marked “HAZARDOUS WASTE” in the trash area on level 1. Please include a Safety Data Sheet with all hazardous waste. Never dispose of hazardous materials in the trash.
PPE
Personal Protective Equipment is required for many operations in The Ground Floor Makerspace. It is your responsibility to implement the necessary levels of PPE. Closed toe shoes are required in both the Prototyping and Fabrication labs. Specific clothing requirements are called out in the programs page of our member portal. Members who arrive without closed toe shoes may be asked to leave. All work in the Fabrication Lab requires safety glasses and may also require hearing protection. Shop-supplied glasses and ear muffs are available near the entrance to the Fabrication Lab, and disposable gloves are available in both the prototyping and fabrication areas (though, we strongly encourage you to provide your own ANSI Z87.1 certified safety glasses).
Whenever working with resins, paints, or products that may be absorbed through the skin, always wear appropriate gloves. Whenever creating dust or particulates always wear appropriate respiratory protection. All materials containing VOCs (solvents, aerosols, etc.) should be used in the spray booth. If you are not sure of the appropriate PPE for your operation or have questions about how to procure or wear PPE, consult a staff member. Further, if a staff member instructs you that PPE are required for your activity, then it is your responsibility to comply.
1819 Innovation Hub
Venture Lab
The UC Venture Lab connects founders to talent and funding to help launch new companies. Our team includes UC Office of Innovation staff as well as Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs), coaches, curated service providers, and subject matter experts.

Huddle Rooms / Conference Rooms
Huddle rooms within the 1819 Innovation Hub each seat up to 4 are available to Makerspace Members on a first-come basis. Conference Rooms may only be scheduled by UC faculty, staff, students, and 1819 Building Partners.

Intellectual Property
The Ground Floor Makerspace makes no claim to IP developed here, however, if your project makes significant use of UC funds then we strongly advise you to consult the office of Technology Transfer about the disposition of the IP. Submit your idea to start the discussion.
Photography
By participating in any activity of the Ground Floor Makerspace or 1819 Innovation Hub, I hereby grant my permission to University of Cincinnati, 1819 Innovation Hub, and the Ground Floor Makerspace and its representatives to photograph and video any and all users, and otherwise capture images of any and all users. I further grant University of Cincinnati, 1819 Innovation Hub and the Ground Floor Makerspace and its representatives the right to reproduce, use, exhibit, display, broadcast and distribute these images and recordings in any media now known or later developed for promoting, publicizing or explaining University of Cincinnati, 1819 Innovation Hub and the Ground Floor Makerspace, and its activities and for administrative, educational, or research purposes. Photographs, video or images are the property of University of Cincinnati.
Commercial Activity
The Ground Floor Makerspace makes no restriction on commercial activity however, certain memberships may limit the type of commercial activity permissible. Full access to operate a commercial entity from the makerspace requires a Monthly Membership. If you are unsure about whether your project constitutes a commercial venture please discuss this with the Makerspace Director.

Annual Closed Days
We are closed on all University Holidays. This includes Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, UC Winter Season Days, and New Year’s Day. Depending on where in the week these days fall, we may be closed adjacent days.
Closure Policy
We follow UC weather closure policy. In the event of a weather closure notice will be sent via email to any members registered for programs or equipment bookings.

Parking
Street parking is available on Winslow and metered parking is available at both the 1819 and Winslow lots. A pay station is located at the northeast entry to the building.

UC Community Makerspace Waiver and User Agreement
This agreement covers use of the UC Ground Floor Makerspace (“Makerspace”) by current UC Students, faculty, staff and CID/1819 Partners (“UC Community”)
Safety and Conditions of Use
I agree that while using the Makerspace I am personally responsible for my own conduct and safety and for any unsafe or dangerous conditions my use of the Makerspace creates to myself and others. I agree I will safely use the Makerspace facilities, tools, equipment, and materials for their intended use only. I also agree to use the appropriate personal protective equipment for each task in which I engage. I will not use any tools, equipment or material without being properly instructed and certified. I will comply with all UC policies and rules, including but not limited to all Makerspace policies, guidelines, the types of things that, and instructions, which may be amended from time-to-time. I agree that I shall be responsible to pay any applicable fees for use of Makerspace facilities, tools, equipment, or materials, and for any and all damage, loss, repair, or maintenance resulting from my use of the same. I acknowledge that the Makerspace is open for use by other individuals and that the confidential nature of my work, project, ideas, creations, prototypes or other material may not be maintained and that UC makes no representations, assurances or warranties regarding the same. I understand that I am responsible for properly monitoring and labelling anything I bring into the Makerspace, and that UC is not responsible for any lost, damaged, or stolen property.
Assumption of the Risk
I recognize and agree that my use of the Makerspace facilities, tools, equipment, and materials is entirely optional and voluntary. I further understand and agree that such use involves various inherent hazards, dangers, and risks, including without limitation, and only by way of example, the risk of trips, slips and falls; cuts, broken bones, burns, and other wounds to hands, head, feet, eyes and other body parts; serious personal injury and illness, paralysis, permanent disability, and even possibly death; electrical shock; impalement; exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, noise, and vibrations; and accidents due to negligence of other users or UC personnel or vendors, or due to defective or inadequate facilities, equipment, tools, machinery, materials, or due to inadequate maintenance or repair, training, instructions, supervision, first aid and medical treatment, or safety gear. I ASSUME FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL RISKS OF LOSS, DAMAGE, OR PERSONAL INJURY, INCLUDING DEATH, THAT I
MAY SUSTAIN, OR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE OF PROPERTY I OWN, AS A RESULT OF MY USE OF, OR PRESENCE IN, THE MAKERSPACE, WHETHER CAUSED BY THE NEGLIGENCE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI OR OTHERWISE.
Release of Liability
With full awareness and appreciation of the risks involved, I, for myself and on behalf of my family, spouse, estate, heirs, executors, administrators, assigns, and personal representatives, hereby forever release, waive, discharge, and covenant not to sue UC, its Trustees, officers, agents, servants, independent contractors, affiliates, employees, successors, and assigns (collectively the “Released Parties”) from any and all liability, claims, demands, actions, and causes of action whatsoever, directly or
indirectly arising out of or related to any loss, damage, or injury, including death, that may be sustained by me or any of the property belonging to me, whether caused by the negligence of the Released Parties, any third party using the Makerspace, or otherwise, while participating in any activity while in, on, or around the Makerspace and/or while using any Makerspace facilities, tools, equipment, or materials.
Indemnification
Individual Indemnity Agreement
I agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Released Parties from and against any and all costs, expenses, damages, claims, lawsuits, judgments, losses, and/or liabilities (including attorney fees) arising either directly or indirectly from or related to any and all claims made by or against any of the Released Parties due to bodily injury, death, property damage, loss of use, monetary loss, or any other injury from or related to my use of the Makerspace facilities, tools, equipment, or materials, whether caused by the negligence of the Released Parties or otherwise.
Acknowledgment
By clicking I AGREE below I acknowledge and represent that I have read the foregoing Waiver of Liability, understand it and sign it voluntarily as my own free act and deed, including without limitation the Release of Liability and Indemnification requirements contained herein; I am sufficiently informed about the risks involved in using the Makerspace to decide whether to sign this document; no oral representations, statements, or inducements, apart from the foregoing written agreement, have been made; I am at least eighteen (18) years of age and fully competent; and I execute this document for full, adequate, and complete consideration fully intending to be bound by the same. I agree that this Wavier of Liability shall be governed by and construed in accordance with Ohio law, and that if any of the provisions hereof are found to be unenforceable, the remainder shall be enforced as fully as possible and the unenforceable provision(s) shall be deemed modified to the limited extent required to permit enforcement of the Wavier of Liability as a whole.
User Agreement
As a user of the Ground Floor Makerspace, I acknowledge and agree to the following while making use of the makerspace:
• I have read and agree to the Ground Floor Makerspace General Policies
• I acknowledge that safety is my responsibility, for myself and for others in the lab.
• I will follow all written and verbal directions given to me by the staff and managers of the labs.
• I will ask staff for assistance whenever I have questions or feel that I cannot perform an operation safely.
• I understand that the principle of stewardship is to be followed while working in the labs. Therefore, I will be a good steward of both the natural resources and the material resources available to me in the shop; I will not knowingly waste supplies, or damage shop equipment.
• I understand that I am responsible for all tools that I use in the Makerspace. If tools are lost, stolen, or damaged through misuse while I am responsible for them, I understand that I will be charged immediately for their repair or replacement.
• I understand that all tools provided in the Makerspace are to remain within the premises of the makerspace at all times and are to be returned to the tool counter after I have finished using them, or at the close of business (whichever comes first). And, that under no conditions are tools permitted to leave the premises.
• I understand that the labs are an inherently dangerous place to work, and that no matter how diligent I am, I cannot eliminate all possibility of injury. I also understand that the staff and management are not the guarantors of my safety. Therefore, I will be responsible for my own health, safety, and welfare while working in the shop.
• Large scale production is not permitted unless approved in advance by UC/1819. UC/1819 reserves the right define what constitutes large scale production on a case-by-case basis and preclude, or stop, any use it deems not consistent with, or in the best interest of, UC, 1819 or the Makerspace.
• I understand that this agreement provides access for personal, academic, and UC sponsored entrepreneurial pursuits only. Any commercial access will require a separate non-UC user account and monthly membership subscription.
• I understand that the use of the Makerspace is a privilege, not a right, and my failure to carry out these responsibilities will result in the loss of my access privileges.
Photography
By participating in any activity in the Makerspace or 1819 Innovation Hub, I hereby grant my permission to University of Cincinnati, 1819 Innovation Hub, and the Makerspace and its representatives to photograph and video any and all users, and otherwise capture images of any and all users. I further grant University of Cincinnati, 1819 Innovation Hub and the Makerspace and its representatives the right to reproduce, use, exhibit, display, broadcast and distribute these images and recordings in any media now known or later developed for promoting, publicizing or explaining University of Cincinnati, 1819 Innovation Hub and the Makerspace, and its activities and for administrative, educational, or research purposes. Photographs, video or images are the property of University of Cincinnati.
