The Mandelbear has been kicking around the computer industry long enough to have been in grad school when the ARPANET was set up. The name comes from the Middle-Sized Bear (in the last section, "Conversation with the Middle-Sized Bear", of Cordwainer Smith's story "Mark Elf") meeting up with the Mandelbrot Set in alt.callahans. The result, an infinitely fuzzy, vaguely ursine fractal, can be seen in the default icon. The Bear can also be found at steve.savitzky.net and computer-curmudgeon.com.
