The air in the area has now dropped back down to code yellow, though there was a moment or so, when I made a quick run to the Giant a couple of hours ago, I could've sworn I still smelt smoke. I've largely spent the weekend in, doing my streaming and writing my contribution for Top Gale Week, and since it's one that fits today's prompt, I've managed to finish and post it today.

Title: It's in the Air
Fandom: Baldur's Gate 3
Characters: Gale/Lae'zel
Warning: Sex, with inappropriate use of telekinesis
Disclaimer: Just don't give her any more money, okay?
Note: Written for Top Gale week, for the prompt Pleasure Dom.

During my commute home on Thursday I started to think I could already feel the bad air coming in, even though the wildfire smoke hadn't reached our area yet. But when I stepped outside yesterday morning I could smell it. There was a faint haze in our neighborhood, and possibly a stronger one elsewhere. Once, of course, I could've just stayed inside after that because it would've been my telework day, but of course Trump took those away from us. I'll have to go out this morning, too, to pick up the dry cleaning, but I'm hoping it'll be a little better by then. Neither my mother nor my sister are setting foot outside their houses until this is over.
I need to order more filters for the air purifier. I've already ordered more N95s, although that's also for the upcoming plane trips. I've now got one more work day before San Diego, and it's a good thing I didn't take that one off, since one of my fellow librarians is going to be having her retirement ceremony on it. We have made sure not to include any fruits or vegetables in the refreshments; she doesn't like the former anyway.

This week is not going well. The weekend involved almost nobody watching either of my streams, than Photo refusing to save the trimmed version of Saturday's, which currently sits unuploaded as I try to decide what to do. Yesterday at work I had a meltdown over having to prepare a personal development plan, completely with required career goals, and of course I am not allowed to say my one career goal has always been to survive, and with protections for the disabled now being removed that's certainly going to remain the case now. And now I have access denied to one of the WIPs on my computer I was foolish enough to save to .ODT while I was trying to switch my word processing to Trio Office, and right now I don't even know how widespread that problem is.
It's a work I've been struggling to figure out the plot to, and I'm sorely tempted to just abandon it. Especially since I've getting swayed more towards abandoning my remaining HP WIPs too, or at least the ones it would take me much longer to finish. I might put off final decisions there until after San Diego, though. This isn't feeling like a good week to make them.
I've been able to look at the SDCC schedule, at least. I'm tempted to offer to go to the Doctor Who panel for my sister, who would certainly be reporting on it if she could afford to travel to San Diego right now. But trying to write an article for her Tellyvisions blog there would be a pain in the neck when I currently don't have a laptop.

Aside from having gone to the dry cleaner's on Friday because I didn't know if it be open on the holiday, I had a pretty ordinary Saturday yesterday. We would've been willing to wait until Sunday for our groceries to be delivered if need be, but we got them at our normal time. I got to the first big dramatic moment in my first durge run, which was more brutally simple than I had thought it would be. In the evening it was a bit noisier outside than usual; I heard someone playing "Yankee Doodle" on a flute, but I ended up turning in early, and slept soundly through the rest of the evening. My sister and brother-in-law and especially their cats weren't so lucky; they had to endure the scary sounds of flyovers and their neighbors setting off illegal amateur fireworks.
Though with the air quality in the area currently wrecked by last night's fireworks, my mother is feeling the effects even though we're both continuing to stay inside the house. Also I've got an afternoon headache for the second day in a row, and I fear the painkillers won't get rid of it entirely. The high today is only 94 though, and when it was previously predicted to break a hundred again.

After days of observing everyone in Europe struggling to cope with the heat dome via posts in multiple discords, and seeing it hit the northern part of the country earlier this week, we're getting it in DC just in time for the 4th of July weekend. It actually didn't hit the triple digits Fahrenheit today, but it will tomorrow. And it was certainly hot enough, when my D&D group had to cancel what would've been our first session playing Daggerheart because the DM needs to deal with his broken air conditioning! We cancel more often than not recently, though we did manage our session zero last week, even amid the noise of two World Cup games going on, and then another pair starting as we were wrapping up!
It won't be as bad, of course, for those of us whose air conditioning is working, and who can stay in it, and we're far down south enough people tend to have it. And since federal workers, at least, have Friday off as our legal holiday, we only have to get through tomorrow, and then Friday morning I'll have to go to the dry cleaners, but I wasn't planning on leaving the house after that anyway. Not when it's probably only MAGA tourists coming into DC this year, and locals often don't go into the district during the fourth anyway.
Though I actually have three times during my life. Once I went with my boyfriend's family, once my parents and I were invited to a James Joyce reading on the day at the house of someone I think was rich and important, and once I went with my sister and her friends. That last one was actually the first, happening when I was 15/16, and the one I've been flashing back the most to in recent days, because I have memories, late that afternoon, of swimming in some body of water in the general area around the Mall and the Monument. It might not have been the Reflecting Pool. Certainly it seems strange that nobody would've stopped me, even though this was over two decades ago, and I remember not being the only one. I also remember the water not being clean, though it certainly wasn't choked with algae either, and I'm pretty sure there was nothing truly harmful.

It was the weekend for finishing games for me, it seemed. I finished my Bladesinger!Gale run yesterday, and this morning I went to the end of Little Kitty, Big City, if only because the game had started to glitch. I'm actually quite excited to finally be starting my first durge run next week. Though it's been a time for starting things as well. My first attempt to stream the original Baldur's Gate (or the recently updated enhanced edition of it anyway) fell victim to OBS failing to record it properly, and I actually had to end stream and take half an hour to figure out how to fix it, but I did have it working properly by the end of the afternoon. And I'm actually glad to it, because in the process I learned how to force games into windowed mode, which will make streaming various games way easier.
And now, of course, I'm watching Aliona Baranova's return stream, in which she's confirmed she'll finish the BG3 playthrough she and Jen started, though not today, it seems. I think we're all just glad to see her again right now.

For the second year in a row, I spent all of yesterday waiting for the news that Trump had unholidayed Juneteenth and was going to force us to come in on it, but again it didn't happen. Maybe if he's forgetting about it his staff is deciding not to remind him. They probably want the day off, too.
So my first weekday afternoon stream happens today, but I also finished this yesterday morning. I've now contemplated making it the penultimate part of this fic, but I kind of feel like I've built up too much towards the World Cup part to not do that. It'll end there, though.

Title: All The Extras
Part: 9: A Little Longer Down Under

Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione, Molly Weasley
Warning: Nongraphic sex

For the past couple of weeks, I have continually been getting kudos from guests on an X-Men drabble I wrote mostly as an angry response to the release of X3 back in 2005. I posted it to AO3 along with those other old fics I deemed good enough for back when I first got my account a decade an a half ago, and before this onslaught it had about 250 hits or so. As of right now, that drabble has kudos for 48 guests, as well as two registered users. Obviously there is some sort of bot thing going on there. But I am extremely confused as to its nature, or intentions. There have been no accompanying comments, no scammers popping up with offers anywhere within the time period, no explanation.
Purchased the enhannced edition of the original Baldur's Gate, which I've gotten the impression should work well enough on a modern PC, tonight, so I'm definitely playing it sometime. When, of course, remains in question. Juneteenth as a federal holiday still remains uncancelled, and all the logistics people have put everything into place for the holiday, but that still doesn't mean much...
missizzy: (blahblah)
Today in the DC area it is a day for staying at home for more than one reason, including it being terribly hot and muggy out. Though I did have to run down to the Giant for ketchup, rosemary, and drano, since we neglected to order those yesterday. I suppose my iPhone shuffle was only trying to help by playing two holiday songs. Though one of them was "Silent Mind," and any time of the year is a good time to listen to Laura Bailey singing, so....
I think I am accepting that, at some point, I'm going to give in and shell out for YouTube premium. I'd do it faster if it would very much be rewarding bad behavior to do so. The increase in commercials has been bad enough, and now I am getting really, really sick of the health insurance companies' nonstop propaganda trying to claim they're the good guys. Do they really think we haven't all long known better? I suppose I should be glad I haven't seen any pro-ICE commercials on that one. Yet.
As of right now, I am still scheduled to have Friday off. There's plenty of time this week for Trump to cancel that, though. Nonetheless I'm already mentally making plans for the day. Including possibly streaming the original Baldur's Gate game, which I've been thinking about looking at for a while. Which I might also end up doing on July 3rd instead, since I can rely on spend all of that day at home.

Still taking leave at least one day a month partly to burn my use/lose hours and partly for a bit of respite. Felt a bit awkward scheduling this one, since I did so early in the month because Juneteenth was and still remains on the schedule as a day I'll get off late in it, but it's still hard to believe I actually will. But I'm glad to have it today. This was a week that started with my finally buying a second lidded pot, and getting to use it exactly once before the lid fell down and got smashed. I looked into buying a rice cooker instead yesterday, but I'm not sure you can use them to cook amounts as small as we typically cook.
This was also a weekend where I got a couple of people watching my BG3 stream, but almost nobody watching my other two; one streamer who I raided last weekend popped in for a few minutes, and there was then noone else. I'm still getting viewers and even likes on YouTube for Little Kitty, Big City, and even a little bit for Date Everything! I wonder if this might end with my livestreaming only BG3, and recording other games. But given I got more viewers for Dispatch, I kind of feel like I should at least try other games out.
I had considered streaming today at one point, but now am instead going to see The Mandalorian and Grogu. It'll be the first time I've gone to the cinema in nearly a year. I've developed an interest in seeing Project: Hail Mary as well, but it's no longer playing at convenient times at the local place.
missizzy: (hisoka)
I did want to get this finished now, since it's for the Merry Month of Masturbation, so obviously explicit content. Though it's not really so merry: it's another fic that takes place during my first BG3 playthrough, and it does so right after Elminster's visit.

Gale supposed he should have talked to Sara again, when she followed Karlach back to camp. )

My trip to Atlanta was an exercise in having a great time despite logistical headaches. Starting with a literal one just as the train was getting stuck while entering Atlanta due to a stalled freight train on the tracks. (Later, when someone in Discord similarly took a night train down, I jokingly posted a hope the same thing wouldn't happen to them. It did. They thanked me for the warning.) My plane back was also delayed four hours, the hotel wifi didn't work well, and it always seemed to rain exactly when I didn't have my umbrella. I suppose I should be glad the rain kept the temperature down...
But despite all this, I had some of my best times yet during a con trip. The highlight of MomoCon was absolutely attending the TriForce Quartet concert; I'd never heard of them and wasn't familiar with most of the music they played, but I still loved it. But it was also one of the best floors I've been on. I even managed to find and buy a cute knit bag small enough to be brought into the live show venue fifteen minutes before the floor closed. Monday I met a bunch of fellow Critters at the aquarium, and once we all managed to actually find each other, we had a great time see all sorts of fish, getting a close look at penguins and sea lions, and even getting a glimpse of a whale shark! And no spoilers for the show, obviously, but it was a blast.
I also finished writing a new fic, but I'm not sure when I'm going to get it typed up and posted. It may not happen until Saturday.

I packed last night, and printed a copy of my train ticket, and found a way to display it on my phone as well, though no thanks to the Amtrak app, which truly proved useless. I'll go in to work, and then go to the train station afterwards, possibly stopping for dinner along the way. If we get 59 minutes due to the holiday, I might even try to buy new sandals. One of my current ones decided to break out of nowhere Wednesday evening. I might even end up buying new ones in Atlanta. Though apparently it's also going to be rainy all week. I made sure to pack an umbrella, too.
I've got a ticket to Momocon on Sunday as well, and for the aquarium on Monday, where a bunch of critters are preparing to meet up at noon or so. Mom encouraged me to go see the Margaret Mitchell house and museum, but I don't think so. I've read just enough of Gone with the Wind to feel very sorry that such a talented writer wrote such a book. I'll need to find some other way to occupy myself tomorrow. Apparently one can tour Marvel filming sites?

Got my first raid today! Another small streamer whom I raided some time back returned the favor. Streaming BG3 both yesterday and today, if only because I'm going to be out of town come next Saturday, I got a few more viewers than I have on my non-Dispatch streams before them. Though I also got accosted by at least one more non-bot scammer, possibly two.
As I close in on one trip, I'm also working on the next. I booked my flights to San Diego and back just now. Ended up going with United, like in previous years, but one thing that made me raise my eyebrows was they had no direct flights going either way, and when we'd always taken those in the past. (I also looked into Southwest, who didn't have any direct flights either, but they often haven't.) Hope there are some good options for lunch in the Chicago airport. A layover there might not be a bad idea for me if there are, since I can't eat on planes.

Between one thing and another, I haven't been playing much of Dragon Age: Origins since I started it ages and ages ago, but I did reach one milestone today: I reached the part where it started requiring more memory to run on a modern computer than it wants to allow itself, forcing me to scramble to figure out why it was crashing and than how to install a mod/patch that would get it to just use the extra memory. Just as well I'm not streaming it right now. Also, I'm pretty sure I've finally started the game's proper plot. I currently have a fluctuating crush on Alistair, who is my main candidate for romancing at the moment, but I probably should meet the other characters before making that decision. Also, the more he and Morrighan snipe at each other, the more I wonder if I should just ship them together instead.
Also, a week before I head down to Atlanta! I've actually joined a discord for people going to the live show, and I might be doing a meetup with some of them at the aquarium, though the plans for that don't seem to be concrete yet. Though this weekend I also feel like I should book my flights to and from San Diego; it's closing in on two months before that as well.

And so I have reached the answer to life, the universe, and everything, and meanwhile I have a birthday twin who's made it to the century mark! Congratulations, Sir David Attenborough. I should watch a bit more of his shows at some point. I've taken the day off, though I'm not sure what I'm doing with it. Besides posting this.
This morning I got the second comment on "The Final Afternoon" that was clearly from a scammer, which is especially depressing when the story still only has four hits. Though at least this one made the effort of reading it first. Here's hoping I have more luck with this thing.

I streamed as usual Saturday. I did note from the summary afterwards I hadn't gotten watched nearly as much as I was last week, which felt sad. But it didn't feel like the drop needed a real explanation; viewership still was about at the level it's often been at during the month I've been doing this now.
Then, while preparing for this morning's stream, I took a look at the video, and discovered OBS has suddenly stopped picking up the desktop audio! No wonder my viewership dropped. Honestly, I'm a little surprised I apparently still got 35 minutes worth! I kind of wish one of the five presumably non-scamming viewers who came in and out at various points according to the summary had pointed it out, but they might have even thought I'd turned the audio off on purpose. That's far from unknown on Twitch, though usually the streamer then turns music on.
I was forced to let Windows update Friday morning, and I'm pretty certain that's the cause, and that they turned something off in the settings. Unfortunately, I current have no idea what. I've posted in the OBS discord and hopefully someone will tell me by Friday, although my streaming then was up in the air even before this.
ETA: Figured it out on my own. This time.

I finished this little narrative prelude this morning, right before I started streaming.

The Final Afternoon )

I finished Dispatch on stream this morning. My gameplay was terrible, down in the bottom percentage, but I still very much liked it. I also like how many viewers it got my stream. It seems to be a popular game to watch; mostly I've only been getting one viewer at a time, but I got more both last and this Sunday morning. I might play through it again at some point, if only because there are a few alternate scenes I now really want to see, and I'll definitely play through the second season whenever it might come out.
I'm having to play a few games that are new to me. The first one was Little Kitty, Big City, which I started on stream Friday night, and I truly loved it. I'll do at least a few more Friday nights of it, no doubt. (It can apparently be finished in two hours, but I will no doubt take way longer.)
I've also started uploading my past broadcasts to a YouTube account of their own, including some highlights from my test recordings. I might make some other highlight videos too at some point.
Also these past few weekends I've also been trying to record my latest song. I'd gotten some okay recordings, then this afternoon I got one I felt certain I would post right after I finished recording. I got more hesitant after watching through it, but now I've decided to go with it. And hey, a song from from the Hunger Games movies feels appropriate these days:

In the two days since Hotelpocalypse was announced as happening today and my sister confirmed she can't afford to go this year, I have been thinking about how to make the biggest trip I've ever taken on my own as low-stress as possible. I quickly decided today I would make no attempt at the the biggest hotels, and started debating how many minutes of wait time I would allow before I gave up on any downtown hotel room and just went straight for one in Mission Valley. I really want my room booked and done with today. Especially because this wasn't even the best day for me to take off work.
But there's no wait time. My bar is currently moving, if slowly, but I don't know how long this is going to take, or what's going to be available as a result. Initially I even wondered if the system crashed, but now I'm hearing on Bluesky some people are now getting in.
Being home meant I watched lilsimsie's stream this morning, with the congressman trying to keep EA out of the hands of Kushner and the Saudis. I'm afraid his words didn't leave me all that hopeful, honestly. I signed the petition, though.
ETA: A two-hour Hotelpocalypse! Got a room in Mission Valley in an area that doesn't look like a bad place to spend a free Saturday.
