. I went to the monthly community markets for the first time in a while, because they were at a new venue. (Not just as in, the markets were being held there for the first time, but also as in, the official opening of the venue was part of the day's programme, though I arrived later and missed that part.) I was entertained by a woodworking stall that was selling chopping boards adorned with such inspirational messages as "This is where I murder vegetables", "It's easy to keep your kitchen clean if you never cook", and "Look out! She's got a knife!"

. At the weekend gaming session, we were missing one of the players for Ticket to Ride Legacy, so we played TIME Stories and Xia: Legends of a Drift System. TIME Stories is an interesting game concept, but I disliked several of the creative decisions made for the scenario we played, which is set in an insane asylum. Xia was fun to play, but not fun for the long stretches where I had nothing to do but wait for my turn to come around again.

. At the regular weekly boardgame meet, we played Quarriors and Twisted Cryptids. Quarriors was fun and I would happily play it again. Twisted Cryptids was one of those cases where somebody brought along a new game that they hadn't opened yet or read the rulebook, and were consequently entirely unprepared to teach the game to the other players, so everyone was stuck figuring it out as they went along; this may have affected my opinion of the game.

. The current run in XCOM 2 is still going well.

. Rehearsals continue.

. It has been over a month since I instituted the Now Playing box, and I think I have to conclude that it's not working for me. I've read a fair number of books, using the system I already had in place for narrowing the options down to a manageable number, and caught up on some podcasts likewise, but I haven't touched any of the movies or TV shows.

A Ticuna translation

When I went to Leticia in April, I brought some presents, and one of them, for my tutor, was this book, Todo el mundo, a Spanish-language translation of All the World (2009).

cover of a picture book: two kids w/backs to you, facing a cloud over the ocean

I'm gratified to say that my tutor loved the words and pictures as much as I do. She read the title and immediately translated it into Ticuna. And then she paged through the book.

"Beautiful," she said. "I'm going to translate it into Ticuna."

And my friends, she did.

Here are some sample pages from the book...

text says un caracol que guardar: child hands a parent a shell

text says todo el mundo es ancho y profundo (shows ocean and coast)

text says "colmena, abeja, alas zumbido, hojas, mazorca ..."

And here are her notes that cover the text on those pages:

a list of phrases and words in Spanish and Tikuna

I am so, so excited about this! I told her I will try to get it published, with her as the translator. I have a small press in mind; I have the author's agent's information bookmarked.

It would be so, so wonderful, if there could be a Ticuna-language edition of this book. (I mean, best of all would be Ticuna-authored and -illustrated books in Ticuna, but there's room for good things that aren't the best thing.)

I do recognize and honor the fact that Ticuna has basically been an oral language for a culture that passes stories and knowledge orally. But I believe you can maintain those traditions and also utilize and enjoy the technology of writing when you want. The world is wide and deep, and I would love to make picture books in Ticuna a thing in this wide, deep world.

June Movie Wrap-Ups

Image

Pitfall ('26):「If the fall doesn’t kill you… He will.」Brutal hunter x prey, I didn't understand what was up with the little girl and the killer. The siblings survive but their lovers don't. And the awful friend survives too. 2/5 stars

Backrooms ('26):「You are not supposed to be here.」Why did the guy so hardcore crazy. 😧 I liked the ending and how it brought things together. I saw there's going to be an extra 15 minute added to the end version I'll have to watch. 3/5 stars

It ('17):「You’ll float too.」This is a movie I've seen a lot of bits of via osmosis so it was interesting to just sit down and see it all at once and I'm surprised how much I ended up enjoying it. I could see how the story influenced Stranger Things. 4/5 stars

Image

Revenge ('17):「Why do women always have to put up a fight?」Classic revenge story, woman gets wronged, boyfriend does the wrong thing and she's forced to get revenge after barely surviving. Gruesome and made me cringe multiple times.

It Chapter 2 ('19):「It ends.」Something I've been wondering since part 1, no one ever found all those bodies?? In the first movie surely they'd have told someone even via anonymous tip about them right? Or in this one when they bodies went into the water, someone would notice right??? Anyway, I do not enjoy crying so much over something. 😭😭😭 I'm kinda curious about the '90 version I might...read fic. 3/5 stars

Until Dawn ('25):「Every night a different nightmare.」Apparently this is based off of a PlayStation video game. I enjoyed it and didn't think it was too repetitive. The friendship aspect was great besides that new guy. 4/5 stars

The Cell ('11):「Enter the mind of a killer.」Mindfuck of a movie, I don't know how I felt about Lopez's acting but overall I liked the idea and story it told. 3.5/5 stars

A Cat in Paris ('10): 「By day, a pet… By night, a thief!」I really enjoyed this story of a cat who lives with a little girl by day and a thief by night and how they're connected by the police and bad guys. It's unrealistic what happened with the thief in the end but I don't even care. :> Will definitely check out Nina and the Hedgehog’s Secret by the same directors. 5/5 stars

Fanfic writing

I finished the first draft of my third smutty Dare You To Death fic, yay.

The Edge of Horizon

Episode 5 was great. And aww, there is an adorable secondary GL couple. I’m glad, because the main couple for now is mainly angst, longing, passionate kissing, and then even more angst. 😊

More with spoilers here.I saw hints about our future GL couple in earlier episodes, and I’m so glad to have it confirmed. Siri is lovely and she deserves good love. And Janthorn is very cool and also deserves to have such a sweet girlfriend. 😊

And I think, I maybe start getting turned over a little about Chat. He’s so, so stupid, and cruel and weak. But he also has so many daddy issues, and I do feel a bit sorry for him for being always slapped, belittled and ignored in favor of his much more intelligent and well-mannered younger brother. Of course what he does because of it is stupid and cruel and careless, I don’t deny that. And now after Phob got him beaten up, I think he’ll do something massively stupid to get revenge. And it might get bloody.

And wow, Phob is so ruthless sometimes. I like it. He was always obsessed with Tin, beyond just an ordinary love. But now he’s obsessed, possessive and occasionally kinda violent.

And Tin thinks that he protects Phob’s reputation by pushing him away. Because Phob has a career in the army awaiting.

And I’m starting to think that there is a possibility that this drama won’t have a happy ending. But also it is an unrealistic almost lakorn, so I’ll keep hoping for the happy end anyway.

And on the more shallow level – Inn looks very handsome in uniform, and Ongsa’s eyes – wow... You could drown in them. They are so beautiful and big. I enjoy their chemistry so much. And their kissing is hot, hot, hot.

Kdramas

I’m lucky with my kdrama choices lately. Agent Kim Reactivated continues to be very entertaining. And lately also touching, too. The episode 7 even made me a little bit teary-eyed.

And I started Spooky in Love because I love Park Eun Bin. And I like it a lot. Well, at least I liked the first two episodes a lot. I could do without an upcoming love triangle, especially since SML is already very annoying. But I like the rest, so for now I will be watching. And while watching the 1st ep I was thinking ‘hmm, should I recognize the male lead, because I really think like I should’. So I checked, and yes, I should recognize him, because Yang Se Jong was Seo Hwi in My Country The New Age.

Park Eun Bin plays Yeo Ri, a very rich chaebol heiress, who has a big secret. And that secret is that she can see ghosts. She is visited by ghosts of people who died unjust deaths, and whose bodies can’t be found. And she secretly tries to guide the police to the place where those bodies are buried.

Yang Se Jong is Gang Uk, a passionate and honest prosecutor, who meets Yeo Ri by chance while solving one of his cases. And together they fight crime. I mean, they work together (or rather will start soon) to solve unsolved murder cases.

If you want more Canadian hockey m/m antagonists-to-lovers romance, and know Polish (yes, it takes place in Canada, but it’s written by a Polish author), then I can recommend this book. This is the first book in the duology called Blueliners.

Two main characters are: Damien Johnson who joins a new NHL team, and his teammate, and later roommate, surly and closed off Hunter Marshall. They instantly get on each other’s bad side, but also start flirting with each other on the dating app, both not knowing that the guy they drawn to is their real life frenemy.

I enjoyed the first book a lot. It’s decently written. I liked both guys and their romance. I liked the secondary characters. I even liked the sex scenes. I found them hot, and not at all awkward, despite being written in my native language. 😊 But there is some angst here, too, because both guys have a few traumatic events in their past, or, in Hunter’s case, present.

I bought this book on a whim two weeks ago, and read it all in a week. And then I instantly started the second book called Grinder, which came out a month ago. For now I only read a few chapters, but I liked them, too.

There is the third book in this series called Goalie, which was written and published first and is about a het romance between secondary characters from Blueliners. Damien and Hunter are the secondary characters in Goalie, and from what I gathered this book and Grinder cover more or less the same time period, just each focuses on different characters. I might read Goalie, too, after I’m done with Grinder.

Fun Nonsense Question

This week is my son Mason's birthday week and so, as part of that, I've been stopping at our favorite coffee shop every morning to pick him up his favorite coffee drink (a meil, a honeyed latte.) Claddagh, the coffee shop, often has a little notebook on the counter near where people wait to pick up their finished drinks. Today's question FASCINATED me and so I will share it with you all.

What inedible thing would you want to eat?

Sample answer: grout beause it looks like marshmellow fluff. I thought about this for a long time, actually. Eventually I settled on stryofoam because it looks like it ought to have the flavor and texture of those rice cakes everyone used to eat in the 1990s. (Remember those? I secretly liked them.) I asked Shawn this and she also pondered it for a long time and decided on foaming handsoap because it looks like forbidden milk froth. While she was considering her answer, I also posited packing peanuts might be another one since they already look like that orange circus candy, only white. She suggested that maybe packing peanuts would have the taste and mouthfeel of some kind of white cheddar version of Cheetos.

So what about you? Anything to add to this weird little question?

Do you remember?

It’s that time again, update time!

The weekend was mostly low energy cause Friday was tiring. What did come on Saturday was a delivery. Mum wanted something from John Lewis, so asked me to look if there was anything to get the free delivery. And ahh! They had the other Stranger Things Care Bears so of course I got them (along with a book) and they were on sale too so cheaper than Lucas was

So the gang is all here.

Image

Dustin is my fav, his hair is so cute with all the curls! And Will’s lil jacket. (And Mike is also there I guess.). Oddly Mike’s tag is different to the others which is so odd.

I tried looking for my Jurassic Park boxset but it’s still awol which really bugs me. However Netflix has them so I was able to watch it on Sunday like I hoped.

It really is one of those all time greats. The wonder, the performances, how great it all looks. And of course now it’s clear to see how the ‘spared no expense’ line is a lie. Like man you have a skeleton crew running things, and you don’t even have locks on the cars (even if dinos weren’t escaping there’s electric fences) and there was clearly no plan even if basic things went wrong.

On the night I watched the second Sana film, Sana Let Me Hear. (A few thoughts ahoy)

Yesterday was a town trip but before I went there was some issues. The food shop usually comes today but I clicked the wrong day so it came yesterday instead. I felt so bad having to leave mum with it but there was no way to stay for it. Apparently it even came late in the time slot so it would’ve been impossible for me to stay even if I’d tried.

So I went to Birmingham and hit up a few places before going to the HMV for the signing/performance. I didn’t get too much, I got one comic (a Fantastic Four First Steps one), a black series figure (Brutus from Skeleton Crew) and some Star Wars Unlimited packs (they were half off and had some pretty cool cards).

And I got to see some of the pretty Snoopy art things they’ve done this year (every so often birmingham has a ‘summer’ walk where they have art works of things painted, one of the last ones was Shaun the sheep painted in various ways)

Main thing was a performance and signing from As It Is for their new album! I’d ordered it from the hmv site months again, without hearing any of the tracks, cause I missed them the last time they did a tour. When I picked up my album and wristband the guy at hmv said the performance would be half an hour (though I didn’t hear much cause they were playing something VERY loud over the speakers).

When I came back after noms/going into the other Forbidden Planet (and picking up the Hei Hei that Argos had for mum) the performance was actually longer, being 45 minutes. It was mostly stuff from the new album (half an hour) with stuff from their first one (15 minutes). (Alas that meant they didn’t do anything from my fav album though I didn’t expect them too)

They put on a pretty good show despite the small stage and Patty is a pretty good frontman. And it was funny how he mentioned the switchover as playing stuff from the 2010s ‘which is significant better time than now’ which true. The new stuff has grown on me a bit, the singles weren’t stuff I instantly loved right away, but I do like most now. (Also sadly there was no live sax playing)

I got some pics at the signing and wasn’t sure what to say so ended up just mentioning the heatwave when patty asked how I was (which felt so dumb and cringey😭). They also had a merch van outside, cause they were meant to be doing a tour with someone but it got cancelled (I can’t recall why) so I got a tote bag which is pretty.

Image

On the way home I picked churros from the Taco Bell intending to share with mum but they didn’t taste quite right. I assumed warming them would help but I overdid it and made them burnt😭 fuck my dumbass for that.

I did finish Silverweed Road on the train, I’ll post thoughts properly on the next reading post thing, but it’s now back at the library after being around for two (ish) months (I think?)

I’d sent mum a message saying I was on my way and she’d come to meet me on the way back with Naryu, which was sweet how she got excited when she saw me. Less sweet was how she managed to slip into the pond and get soaked. (I dunno if she was just drinking water and slipped or she saw a fish and decided to go for it) she needed a bath when she got back though, silly girl.

This morning I was tired so didn’t do much (mostly cause I got water from Tesco and the bottles weighed me down cause the offer was for three).

I did watch the Avengers Doomsday trailer and… I felt nothing from it. I think it’s because, as a lot have posted, that there’s been no build up for Doctor Doom. Like Thanos had a lot of build up while Doom is just suddenly there. (And I know it’s due to the original plan, with Kang being derailed cause of the actor being an abuser, so it screwed things over but still) at least it means the Fantastic Four are back though.

There’s also a new Lego set coming based on The X-Files, with Mulder’s office and an alien ship which looks pretty cool. I love that Krycek is one of the figures though it’s so funny they don’t call the smoking man the smoking man. There’s also a video thing with Gillian Anderson promoting it though I’ve not seen it yet.

Anyway, now to rest and watch Seapeekay playing phasmophobia.

exiguous (ig-ZIG-yoo-uhs) - adj., scanty, meager, inadequate.

Taken around 1650 from Latin exiguus, same meaning, but also and originally meaning strict/exact, from exigere, which has many meanings, including to demand and to drive out, the relevant one being to measure against a standard -- so the image is just this much and no more. There's a scene where Henry is holding a boombox over his head while asking Jacinda out, which is a reference to the iconic scene where John Cusack holds a boombox above his head outside the home of his romantic interest in the 1989 comedy drama film "Say Anything".

Titre : Leitmotiv
Auteur : Foehn (Participant.e 11)
Pour : Onéguine (Participant.e 8)
Fandom : Monster
Persos/Couple : Tenma, Runge, Nina, Dieter
Rating : K
Disclaimer : Monster appartient à Naoki Urasawa
Prompt : Johann & Tenma.
