A banner for the SID_Guardian comm on Dreamwidth

Hi, and welcome to SID Guardian!

[community profile] sid_guardian is a noticeboard/community for:

  • linking Guardian fanworks of all kinds

  • linking to Guardian-related news (incl. info about the actors and their other roles) and meta (incl. serious meta, squee, picspams, episode reactions, writing-meta)

  • making Guardian recs, and

  • making fanworks-finder/rec-finder posts.

  • ETA: You can also post content directly to the comm.

Which is to say, it's for letting Guardian fans find each other on Dreamwidth. :)

Please link your Guardian-related posts here! Whether novel or drama, this is the place for it. Don't be shy, and please encourage other Guardian posters to link as well. You can also link to/rec things that have been posted by others.

As the comm develops, we hope to introduce social, discussion and/or prompt posts, but given it's December, we thought we'd start small and manageable.

To kick things off, if you feel like it, tell us a bit about how you ended up in Guardian fandom! Or let us know your favourite character or scene from Guardian, or what your power would be if you were Dixingren.

And remember, there's no tension that can’t be relieved with a lollipop. And if there is, try two lollipops.

Our lovely fandom continues to grow beyond our wildest expectations! Comm membership has just hit 100 98 (and we got impatient)! *shameless champagne and ballooooons*

A few small notes and reminders:

  1. The Welcome/Intro post and the Fannish Resources post are still alive and kicking. Feel free to drop in at any time and say hi, or give us all your resource links (even the ones that might seem really obvious)!

  2. Lurking is also totally fine, of course! *waves to lurkers*

  3. Please tag your posts to the comm so other users can easily find what they’re looking for. In particular, it would be great if you could use the canon: drama and/or canon: novel tags, since it’s not always obvious to us mods which should apply, including for fanart or vids that use drama visuals but draw on novel elements. This is our current list of tags, and we’ll add more type tags as the need arises.

  4. You can find the full (updated) comm rules on the profile page.

  5. Feel free to promote [community profile] sid_guardian on your journal or elsewhere. (Here's a graphic and text.)

And now, without further ado...

The SID team smiling at each other, with a banner reading "Guardian Friending Meme".

Since some of us are new to Dreamwidth, and some of us are new to Guardian, it seems like a good time for a Dreamwidth friending meme. Come and meet new people! (Re)Populate your DW circle!

To participate, just copy the text below, paste it into a new comment and tell us about yourself. (All information is optional.) Then read through other people's comments and say hi / follow them as desired.

I've written a couple of the missing interviews with Zhao Xinci during his loyalty test in episode 16. :-)

Characters: Zhao Xinci | Zhao Yunlan's Father, Zhang Shi, Chu Shuzhi
Additional Tags: Episode 16, Missing Scene, loyalty test, Secret Identity, Anti-Dixing Bigotry, Zhao Xinci’s A+ Parenting, Summary:

In Zhao Xinci’s day, he’d never have countenanced one of Them on his team. When races mingled, discord and divided loyalties were inevitable. But of course Yunlan thought he knew better, was apparently willing to bet Haixing’s security on the strength of the Dixing Envoy’s judgement and so set in place the perfect conditions for his own downfall. Zhao Xinci’s hand clenched on his tea mug, unthinkingly borrowing some of his stowaway’s strength.

Careful, murmured Zhang Shi, you’ll break it and give us away.

Characters: Zhu Hong, Zhao Xinci | Zhao Yunlan's Father

Zhu Hong was not a shrinking violet. The only way she knew to cope with conflict was to barge into it. So she knocked and entered without waiting for an invitation, all fired up to give Zhao Yunlan’s father a piece of her mind.

Next month, Guardian Wishlist 2026 will open for business at [community profile] guardian_wishlist!

This gifting fest runs along the lines of [community profile] fandomtrees and its ilk, but is specifically for Guardian (show, novel, and RPF) and related fandoms (main actors' other roles). It works like this:
  1. People sign up with a wishlist of prompts and things they'd like to receive. Requests can include any media, including transformative works like fic, art, icons, vids, podfic, and also picspams and meta, translation advice, related music links, lollipops, dried fish snacks, powerful ancient artefacts anything.
  2. Anyone can write, draw, record, or otherwise create gifts for any sign-up. Gifts can be posted directly in comments (which are screened until reveals) or to an AO3 collection. Gift posting continues right up until reveals. There are no minimums for gifts.

It's been really fantastic the last five years, and we're looking forward to another round to celebrate this year's Reunion Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival) - so start thinking about what kinds of things you want to ask for. (Don't hold back! Your wishlist could prompt someone to finally make the thing they've been meaning to make for ages - or something they hadn't realised they were dying to put together!)

Our schedule starts at in the middle of August, so we'll be back closer to the date with updated rules and guidelines (all announcements and such are crossposted here on [community profile] sid_guardian), but we wanted to let you know the timeline now:

Hi, and welcome back to the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch. Watch half an episode a week, at your leisure, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here are the previous weeks' rewatch posts.

Episode 19, up to 20:18

Summary
Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng are taking Ye Huo's proteges to safety when Zhu Jiu ambushes them. He puts Chu Shuzhi out of action and claims responsibility/credit for Bo Bi's brother's death. Ye Huo arrives and fights Zhu Jiu. Between Ye Huo and Chu Shuzhi (now back online), they get the upper hand, but Zhu Jiu explodes the fight club prize belt, knocking everyone out.

At the SID, despite knowing all the reasons not to, Zhao Yunlan contemplates using the Hallows to find Zhu Jiu. The Awl activates, and he takes it as a sign. It gives him a vision of being in a freezing lab where Guo Changcheng, Chu Shuzhi and Ye Huo are laid out on guernies, frozen and possibly dead; Chu Shuzhi wakes up and starts choking Zhao Yunlan while laughing maniacally. The nose bleed scene! Shen Wei is furious to find Zhao Yunlan unconscious again! The SID receives a ransom demand from Zhu Jiu: he wants the Hallows in exchange for the hostages.

In the lab, Ye Huo is badly hurt. Changcheng defies Zhu Jiu to insist on giving Ye Huo first aid. Chu Shuzhi distracts before Zhu Jiu can kill Changcheng. Meanwhile, Shen Wei and Zhu Hong head to the Snake village together; on the way, they talk about Zhu Hong's crush on Zhao Yunlan and the science of love.

Image

Quote
Shen Wei: I don't know too much about love. But based on the aspect of bioengineering, at least three days, at most three years, dopamine and norepinephrine will stop secreting. Maybe at that time, you won't have any affection toward him anymore.

Detail
Zhao Yunlan's previous visions have just been flashes of the past or future; this is the first one where he's entered the vision himself and interacted with it. He even shields his eyes against the glare. Is this a symptom of dark energy corruption, the Awl trying to be helpful, or something else?

Questions
Do you have a favourite scene or line of dialogue from this half episode? (If it's the nosebleed scene, do you have a second favourite as well? ;-) How much better would Chu Shuzhi's day have gone if Guo Changcheng had just done what he was told? Which part of the fight did you enjoy the most (Chu Shuzhi vs Zhu Jiu, Ye Huo vs Zhu Jiu, etc)? Why does Zhao Yunlan persist in hoping that touching the Hallows will be at all helpful? What are the best things about the nosebleed scene, for you? What does Zhu Hong think about Shen Wei being the one to go and talk to Fourth Uncle? On a scale of 1 to 10,000, how brave is Guo Changcheng? Any thoughts about Zhu Hong and Shen Wei's conversation about love?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)

Hi, welcome back to our Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is the first half of episode 18. On to the second half!

Episode 18 from 23:38:

Summary: Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei chase Ye Huo, but stop at a T junction. Lin Jing and Da Qing catch up, and the black energy detector shows both Ye Huo and another black energy signature. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei follow Ye Huo, and a fight ensues, but eventually Ye Huo concedes defeat. Zhao Yunlan asks about Zhu Jiu, but Ye Huo doesn't know the name. Meanwhile Lin Jing and Da Qing find Ye Huo's base. Bo Bi also turns up, and all three of them get jumped by Ye Huo's friends. And at the fight club, Zhu Jiu kills one of the manager's flunkies and then the manager himself, but not before being extra-dramatically threatening at him.

Shen Wei watches as Zhao Yunlan uses a pallet to protect himself from Ye Huo's fire

Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei and Ye Huo arrive at Ye Huo's house. Zhao Yunlan gets a phone call about what happened at the fight club. Ye Huo's friends demand Ye Huo's release, threatening their captives. Zhao Yunlan quips that they should be in school instead, and he and Shen Wei start discussing the Dixing education system, then segue into whether or not Zhao Yunlan will be allowed to go to Dixing again. Then Ye Huo tries to talk reason into his friends. In flashback we learn that Ye Huo discovered Zhu Jiu's life force-stealing scheme and has since been trying to protect people from it. Then Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng arrive to free the hostages. Ye Huo expects to be taken back to Dixing for judgment, but is granted mercy. Shen Wei tells him to leave the city, and Zhao Yunlan tells Chu Shuzhi to take the human boys somewhere else too. Lao-Chu gives the trophy belt back to Ye Huo. Meanwhile Ya Qing reminds Zhu Jiu of the three missions Ye Zun gave them, and Zhu Jiu struggles with his injury from the black energy gun, which is getting worse.

Quote:

Ye Huo to Chu Shuzhi: "Actually, I envy you, for being able to live freely and easily here."

Chu Shuzhi: "Yes, true, but my boss is a bastard who's full of himself."

Detail(s):

When Shen Wei summons his dao, ending the fight with Ye Huo, at first he holds it with the edge against Ye Huo's neck - but then he turns it, so it's the blunt side pointing at Ye Huo. He threatens Ye Huo, but only so far, signalling that he's not out for blood, and he's careful with the sharp edge of his weapon.

Questions: Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines? Why do Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan stop at the T junction? How does tracking Ye Huo via the trophy belt work? Why does Ye Huo stop fighting back eventually? What do you think is the best way of getting schools in Dixing? (Is it removing the Regent? *g*) How confused were Ye Huo's friends by Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei not taking their hostage-taking very seriously? Is Ye Huo as a masked saviour a parallel for the Envoy? What exactly does the black energy gun do, that Zhu Jiu seems to be dying from his injury? What is the third mission Ye Zun gave them? And finally, any thoughts about whether (or how) any of this connects with the novel?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

  • all kinds of fanworks are welcome – fic, art, vids, picspams, etc. - including those made for exchanges and events
  • new chapters of WIPs count
  • meta or discussion posts, too
  • whether or not you've already linked these in a post of their own, we still want them here!

If you're linking to fanworks you didn't create yourself, please clearly mark these "REC", so there's no confusion about authorship/creatorship.

(And please still do link your fanworks, meta, etc. separately, in their own post, at any time!)

So ... what Guardian and related fandoms works did you create or enjoy in June?

Episode 18, up to 23:38

Summary
At the fight club, Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng watch a fight, waiting for their target to make an appearance. When he doesn't, Chu Shuzhi gets impatient, jumps into the ring himself and wins a bout to draw him out. It works, and a fight between the two of them is scheduled. Guo Changcheng reports this to Zhao Yunlan, who is furious and threatens to fire both of them. In the locker room, Chu Shuzhi is prepping for his fight with Ye Huo when his defeated opponent comes in and asks Chu Shuzhi to take revenge for his dead brother. At the SID, a restless Zhao Yunlan decides to go check on them. Shen Wei goes with.

Chu Shuzhi and Ye Huo do battle in the ring. Ye Huo reveals his fire power, and Chu Shuzhi knocks his mask off. The spectators fall silent. Chu Shuzhi gains the upper hand, and the crowd is angry and breaks into the ring. Ye Huo escapes. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei arrive, and Zhao Yunlan shoots the ceiling to stop the riot. He counsels the brother against revenge and advises him to go back home, but the brother goes outside and confronts Ye Huo instead. We find out the rest of the dead guy's backstory along with Ye Huo, who gives his condolences. But the surviving brother won't let it lie, and during their subsequent fight, he pulls out a molotov cocktail. Ye Huo retaliates with his own fire, and Shen Wei intervenes as the Envoy, sending the surviving brother away.

Then Shen Wei openly shifts into his Haixing appearance and asks Ye Huo to accompany him back to Dixing. Ye Huo says he can't and makes his escape. Zhao Yunlan drives up in pursuit, and Shen Wei gets in the car.

Quote
SW: To be honest, back then I sent [Chu Shuzhi] here to be my spy.
ZYL: You think I didn't notice that? But Lao Chu is unsociable and kind of grumpy, and you are not a base person. You surely will not do anything bad. So, I just turned a blind eye to him.
SW: Then, does it mean you will not blame me for this incident?
ZYL: This incident? It doesn't exist.

Detail
Guo Changcheng finds the dark energy detector unresponsive at the fight club, which suggests there aren't any Dixingren in the crowd (at least in the parts where he's pointing it).

Questions
Do you have a favourite scene or line of dialogue from this half episode? Do you think Zhao Yunlan is right to be furious at Chu Shuzhi? Do you sympathise with Bo Bi, the man seeking revenge against Ye Huo on his brother's behalf? Do you have any thoughts or feelings about Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng's dynamic in these scenes? (Does Chu Shuzhi know that Xiao Guo reported in to the chief?) How does the betting pool at the fight club make any money if Ye Huo always wins? Do you have any thoughts or feelings about the Weilan dynamic in this half episode?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)

Here is the first half of episode 17. On to the second half!

Episode 17 from 22:31:

Summary: Zhao Yunlan has a vision of his mother repeating Ye Zun's words about hearing the true voice of his heart. Then he wakes up at the SID. At Shen Xi's grave, Zhang Shi confronts Zhao Xinci about killing Dixingren, and we see several flashbacks: Zhao Xinci and Shen Xi arguing at the SID about Shen Xi taking their son there to see his father; Shen Xi's death in a stand-off between the SID and a Dixingren criminal, with little Zhao Yunlan witnessing it all; and little Zhao Yunlan at Shen Xi's grave, refusing to talk to his father. After Zhao Xinci leaves, Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan arrive at the grave, and Zhao Yunlan is upset seeing his father's flowers.

Young Zhao Yunlan screaming for his mother as Zhao Xinci and a SID agent hold him back

In Dixing, the Regent tells the Attendant he secretly helped Ding Dun. An Bai and friends are brought in, and the Regent sentences them to death.

Sang Zan brings Zhao Yunlan books with information relating to the Hallows, and Zhao Yunlan immediately finds the one left behind by Zhang Shi. Then he meets up with Cong Bo, who tips him off about an underground cage-fighting ring where black energy is being used. At the university, the chancellor tries to make Shen Wei choose between teaching and being a consultant for the SID, and is saved by Jiajia. All the students love Professor Shen Wei and don't want him to leave! Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei talk about the fight ring case, and about the relationship between Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng. At the fight ring, Chu Shuzhi glares a guy into submission when he gets confrontational at Xiao-Guo. Then they run into a suspicious character wearing a mask ...

Quote:

Shen Xi: "Xinci, you seem less and less like yourself. I don't even know you anymore."

Detail(s):

Just going to quote from [personal profile] branchandroot's brilliant Shen Wei & Zhao Xinci meta post because I look it up every time I rewatch the scene with Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei at Shen Xi's grave:
when Shen Wei goes along with Zhao Yunlan to visit his mother's grave, and Zhao Yunlan tenses up over seeing the flowers his father had brought, Shen Wei isn't talking at random. When he brings up the fact that many of his people resent him for his apparent betrayal of Dixing's interests, not understanding that he's just trying to keep the peace, he's also talking about Zhao Xinci. He's trying, sidelong, to help reconcile father and son, because he hasn't yet seen anything except understandable family tension surrounding what he already knows is Zhao Xinci's tunnel vision over his work and the family tragedy that was, in part, a result of it.
Questions: Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines? Why does Zhao Yunlan rush out of the SID after he wakes up? Does Zhao Xinci really think killing Dixingren solves problems? (He didn't deliberately kill Bao Laosan, after all.) Do you think Zhao Yunlan has reason to hold his mother's death against his father? Is the Dixing justice system just horrible in general, or is the Regent perverting it? How glad is the university chancellor that Jiajia gave him a way to save face and keep Professor Shen after trying to make him ditch the SID? Why did Zhao Yunlan send Xiao-Guo to the fight ring on his own? Did he count on Lao-Chu inviting himself along? And finally, any thoughts about whether (or how) any of this connects with the novel?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

Episode 17, up to 22:31

Summary
We get Bao Laosan's tragic backstory, which Zhu Jiu uses to incite him to attack the SID. Shen Wei searches Dixing for Zhao Yunlan, starting (as far as we know) in the bar, where everyone is rowdy and disrespectful. He quells them with a display of power, and the quaking bartender whispers something in his ear. In Haixing, the SID team confront Bao Laosan, and he takes Lao Li hostage. Zhao Xinci, who has zero de-escalation skills, struggles with Bao Laosan and shoots him. The team are horrified. Meanwhile, Zhao Yunlan and Wu Tian'en are running around Dixing in search of the missing book. Shen Wei finds An Bai and friends and intimidates them for information about Zhao Yunlan's whereabouts. Zhu Jiu and Ya Qing talk about loyalty/ethics and Ye Zun, and we see Zhu Jiu's backstory, being bullied in his job as a palace guard. Zhao Yunlan and Wu Tian'en find an information broker. At the SID, everyone is upset about the case; Zhao Xinci tells them they did well and leaves, returning Zhao Yunlan's gun to Da Qing on his way out. Zhao Yunlan bargains with the information broker for intel, but the masked man stabs him with a poisoned syringe and reveals himself as Ding Dun. Zhao Yunlan falls to the ground in agony. Shen Wei arrives just in time to stop Ding Dun finishing him off. They fight with dark energy, and Shen Wei kills Ding Dun.

Quote
Ding Dun: You want to ask about marriage.
Zhao Yunlan: I... have been a huge asshole since the day I was born; so cold and heartless. I don't want marriage.

Detail
Ding Dun's sign says 包打听 which is translated in every version of the subs as "Knows everything." Google Translate rendered it as "Know-It-All" one time, and "Gossip" another, and Pleco as "nosey parker" -- which explains Zhao Yunlan's bemused reaction.

Questions
Do you have a favourite scene or line of dialogue from this half episode? On a scale from 1 to 10, how upsetting is it to see the SID façade crack? Is the bar the first place Shen Wei looks for Zhao Yunlan? Why do the bar patrons assume Shen Wei is an imposter Envoy? On a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you blame Zhao Xinci for Bao Laosan's death? When Shen Wei intimidates An Bai and co, An Bai folds pretty quickly -- is that due to cowardice, latent respect for the Envoy, or some other reason? Zhu Jiu is unpowered in his backstory; when does he acquire his powers? When Wu Tian'en says he can't teleport anymore, is he telling the truth or lying to spare Zhao Yunlan's health and give him face? When Zhao Xinci tells the SID, "You are truly worthy of being members of the Special Investigations Department" (Viki subs), does he mean it, or is he just trying to cheer them up? Does Ye Zun want Zhao Yunlan dead, or is Ding Dun acting unilaterally when he attacks, or (third option) has Ding Dun conspired with Zhu Jiu and/or the Deacon to take Zhao Yunlan out? If the last option, does Ye Zun know their plan?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)

Episode 16, from 23:53:

Summary:

In Dixing, the Envoy discovers Ding Dun's filed have been destroyed. Zhao Yunlan is still on the run from An Bai and friends. He finds a bar, steals a mask and chats up the barkeeper - dropping unfamiliar terminology and talking about the surface, immediately making himself suspicious. When An Bai et al. arrive and start a fight, Wu Tian'en saves him with his teleportation power. Wu Tian'en warns him about the Regent, who Zhao Yunlan is underestimating as weak and harmless. The Regent appears, and they return him to the palace, where they learn Shen Wei has just left.

Chu Shuzhi and his puppet in the same pose

In Haixing, the case isn't progressing, and Zhao Xinci criticises Zhao Yunlan's methods and suggests dismissing him as chief if even one of the team agrees. Guo Changcheng is the last one Zhao Xinci talks to, offering a lot of leading questions and provocation. Xiao-Guo stands up to him, and Zhao Xinci is satisfied. Then his eyes are yellow, and Zhang Shi tells Xiao-Guo he's his hand-picked weapon. New developments appear in the case: a street has been torn up. When the team arrive at the site, they also learn the security guard witness from the first site has disappeared ... In fact, he's outside the SID right now with Zhu Jiu, who's convinced him destroying the SID will let Dixingren live freely in Haixing.

Quote:

Zhao Xinci to Guo Changcheng: "Da Qing has worked at the SID the longest. The others either possess a risky identity or don't have potential for greatness. Only you have a clean communist background. So if Zhao Yunlan were to be demoted ... You understand my meaning, right?"

Detail(s):

Every time I watch this episode, it stands out to me how many of them notice something off about Zhao Xinci, but they don't talk to each other, so nothing comes of it:
  • Lin Jing's black energy detector goes off (in last week's half-episode)
  • Sang Zan notices him switching between being left-handed and right-handed
  • Xiao-Guo sees him turn all yellow-eyed
  • and Chu Shuzhi says in the lab: "This father of Zhao Yunlan's, I keep feeling a bit ..." so he's picked up on something too!

Questions:

Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines? What's going on with the masks at the bar? How often do An Bai et al. start a bar fight? What would have happened if Wu Tian'en hadn't been there to save Zhao Yunlan? What does the Regent think happened to the Dijun Register? How much do you think Zhao Xinci means his criticism of Zhao Yunlan? Did he concoct this loyalty test on the spot when it turned out Zhao Yunlan was absent, or would he have done something similar regardless? Why do none of the team talk to each other about Zhao Xinci's suspicious traits? Did Zhu Hong shout at Zhao Xinci in their one-on-one interview? What did Zhao Xinci ask Chu Shuzhi?

And finally, any thoughts about how any of this compares to the novel? Does any of it have any direct relation, besides Papa Zhao having a hitchhiker?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

This is the fanworks round-up post for May! Please link in the comments to any Guardian (or related fandoms) fanworks you created or enjoyed last month.

So ... what Guardian and related fandoms works did you create or enjoy in May?

Zhao Yunlan sprawled on a couch, grinning at his phone. The background shows a purply sky with stars. Text reads "Slo-Mo Rewatch. Guardian - half an episode per week @ sid-guardian.dreamwidth.org."

Hi, and welcome back to the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch. Watch half an episode a week, at your leisure, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here are the previous weeks' rewatch posts.

Episode 16, up to 23:53

Summary
Zhao Xinci continues his SID inspection (setting off Lin Jing's black energy detector in the process), immediately identifies Guo Changcheng as an imposter, and introduces himself as Zhao Yunlan's father. He confronts the SID en masse about Zhao Yunlan's absence. A case comes in (the ground torn up at a park; trees toppled), and Zhao Xinci says he'll act as interim chief in Zhao Yunlan's absence. Meanwhile, Zhao Yunlan and the Regent, while walking the Dixing streets, "happen across" an assault which Zhao Yunlan identifies as a set-up. The Regent wanders off leaving Zhao Yunlan alone. In Haixing, the SID team reluctantly investigate using Zhao Xinci's methodology. Da Qing is upset at having forgotten Cat Tongue. In Dixing, a disturbing growly voice calls to Zhao Yunlan, and he, following it, finds the Sky Pillar. The Pillar voice is sinister and portentous, trying to get in his head. Then the three youths from the fake assault show up, annoyed at Zhao Yunlan, and give chase as he runs away through the city.

Quote
Pillar voice to Zhao Yunlan: You're using playfulness to hide how uneasy you are. You can't deceive me, and you can't deceive your heart. You live among humans, but have your heart open to no one. You don't understand the point of everything you're doing. You don't even know whether your actions are right or wrong. (VIKI subs.)

Detail
Zhao Xinci checked Shen Wei's class schedule before coming to inspect the SID. (Stalking runs in the family?)

Questions
Given Zhao Xinci's quizzical face and lack of explanation when Lin Jing's dark energy detector goes off, is this the first time Zhao Xinci has been caught out? Any theories about what Dixing's street lanterns run on (dark energy, geothermal energy, mains electricity, flame)? Why does Zhao Xinci disapprove so strongly of Zhao Yunlan's field trip? When Zhao Xinci critiques Zhao Yunlan's investigative methods, do you think he has a point? Do you understand the fake "assault" in Dixing? What is the Regent's role in that? Who are the youths (An Bai and his friends) working for? Chu Shuzhi seems uncomfortable interviewing the victim's family (compared to, say, when he talked to Ji Xiaobai in the Mirror Girl case) -- any thoughts about why? Pillar!Ye Zun speaks as if he can read Zhao Yunlan's heart -- can he, or is it just a cold reading? Do you think his analysis of Zhao Yunlan is accurate? When he starts, "The only thing I can teach you is--" what was he going to say?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)
