Frequently Asked Questions

What is Uninstalr?
Uninstalr is a lightweight and easy-to-use software uninstaller for Windows.

It attempts to accurately identify all the installed applications, as well as portable applications, and leftovers from previously uninstalled applications, and remove them safely.

It also supports unattended batch uninstallation and many other unique features that others do not.
Uninstalr can do many things that the normal Windows Settings > Apps uninstaller cannot do. For example:
  1. Uninstalr can display information from installed apps that Windows cannot display, such as the Country of Origin.
  2. Uninstalr can display a much more accurate estimate of how much space installed apps are taking from you system, because Uninstalr scans your entire system and actually calculates the space usage, instead of relying on the apps self-reported numbers.
  3. Uninstalr can uninstall apps also when their own uninstaller is missing, corrupted or fails for any other reason.
  4. Uninstalr can also detect and remove portable apps that do not register themselves to the Windows Setttings > Apps list.
  5. Uninstalr can detect and remove leftovers from software you thought you already had removed.
  6. Uninstalr can uninstall many apps in an unattended batch, while with Windows Settings you will be uninstalling things one by one, clicking dozens of buttons along the way.

These are just some of the things Uninstalr can do that Windows Settings (or most other third party uninstallers) cannot do.
In the testing we have conducted, Uninstalr is better in almost every way. You can see the test results here: Uninstaller Benchmarks

That being said, you should do your own testing to make sure you are using the right tool for your needs.
Uninstalr is freeware. It is completely free to use without any functional limitations, data collection, spyware, or adware, in both personal and commercial use.

The catch is that if you use Uninstalr, you are obligated to tell everyone you know how great it is and recommend it to them. Failure to do so may result in bad karma and/or eternal damnation. (That is a joke. There is no catch, really.)
Uninstalr is safe the same way a safety razor is safe.

Uninstalr is a tool that requires your respect and that you use it correctly. If you don’t, there is a major risk that you will hurt yourself. But if you know what you are doing, it will give you a very close and smooth shave.

There are many others who say they prefer a plastic toy razor because they have used them for years and never had a single problem. Of course they have not, because when you shave your face with a plastic toy, you will never hurt yourself, but you are also not really shaving, either.

Also, it is very important to understand that Uninstalr never removes anything without first confirming it with you. It shows you what it thinks should be removed, but it is you who makes the final decision. You are in charge. This power is yours to wield, but it also means that you are responsible for what you do.

You need to decide, whether you want a toy or not.
Uninstalr is not slow, it is thorough. There is a difference.

The only thing Windows Settings > Apps listing does is that it lists software that have self-reported themselves to Windows that they are installed. And this is basically the only thing most other third party uninstallers do.

Of course it is easy to display the list of installed software quickly, when you do not actually check anything or deeply analyze anything. But that is not what Uninstalr does.

Uninstalr actually checks your entire system for installed software, for portable apps and leftovers of old apps.

All this takes some time, but life is not TikTok. You can either do things quickly and poorly, or take a few more seconds or even minutes and do it well. Uninstalr chooses the latter.

It’s also worth noting that you can adjust how Uninstalr works. For example, if you don’t have any portable apps, you can disable the scanning for those, which will make the program faster. There are also many other such settings you can adjust.
Windows does not allow any files or folders to be removed if they are still open or in use by any process.

This is why Uninstalr must restart your computer to fully remove all traces of the application. It is done twice to ensure everything really is removed.

Do notice that the final screen before the uninstallation starts has an option disable the system restart. If you do disable it, the uninstallation performance might be reduced, though.
Yes, of course. This can be done from the application’s Settings. You can exclude specific files, folders or drives.

It is recommended that you add any important data paths to the exclusion list, for example the path where you store your important photos or system backups. Just in case.
LOL.
Uninstalr is freeware. That means it is completely free to use in both private and commercial environments.

Uninstalr Pro is the paid version that you can purchase if you want to ensure Uninstalr will continue to be developed and improved in the future. Uninstalr Pro licenses are perpetual and for-life, meaning if you buy a license, you will be entitled to update to the latest version without any additional update or upgrade fees or costs. Buy once, use forever, basically.

At the moment, the Uninstalr Pro does not contain any additional features that the free Uninstalr does not contain. This is becuase adding disabled features to software just to nag people to buy, is annoying and we don’t want to do that. But, if no one buys the Pro, then maybe we will need to add some exclusive features only to the Pro version.

If you own Uninstalr Pro, you are entitled to technical support by actual human beings. The free version users are asked to use the forum for support.
When a third party software is installed to Windows, it reports to Windows how big it is. That is how the Windows Settings > Apps listing determines the size of installed apps, and that is how most of the other uninstallers determine it as well. It is very fast and easy. The problem is, it’s very inaccurate.

Uninstalr determines the size of installed apps by actually checking the size of every single file and folder the apps have created. This process is slower, but much more accurate.
Because there is no standard way to detect the correct icon for an installed app. And since this is entirely cosmetic, Uninstalr does not spend much time on it.
No, it is not vibe coded. Since this is a rather nuanced topic, please read more about it here: GreatSoftwareCompany.com/ai
Uninstalr does not have any kind of always running or automated telemetry or data collection features. Uninstalr can be fully used offline.

If you use its Check for latest version, it will send to us the version number that you are currently using in order to let you know whether a newer version is available.

If you have something installed in your system that Uninstalr doesn’t recognize, it can ask whether you want to help with Uninstalr’s development and send the names of those software apps to us. If you say Yes, then non-identifying information about those apps will be sent to us. If you say No, nothing will be sent.

If you click any links from the app, it will open your browser to our website and it will pass along the version number of Uninstalr that you are using, in order for the website to inform you if a newer version of Uninstalr is available.

If you activate your Uninstalr Pro license and enter your name and email address to the program, that information will be sent to us in order to verify that you have purchased a license.
jv16 PowerTools is a Windows utility suite that has been around for a long time and that we also developed.

In short, Uninstalr is a standalone and dedicated version of the Software Uninstaller tool from jv16 PowerTools. And since Uninstalr is a newer program, it is also currently receiving more frequent updates and improvements.
