It is a treasure vault. Rich with artwork and you need a few days to explore and truly appreciate all the art pieces. The gallery is categorized by different eras. Since we only had a couple of hours, we headed towards Renaissance and Christian art. Managed to get a couple of souvenirs from the shop such as tea towels and magnets. Would definitely want to visit this gallery again.

The National Gallery in London is absolutely impressive and an essential place to visit, even if you are not a huge art enthusiast. The location is excellent, right in Trafalgar Square, making it very easy to get to. At first glance, the building itself is imposing and beautiful, both on the outside and inside, creating a very elegant atmosphere from the moment you step in. The collection of paintings is massive, and you can see world-famous masterpieces up close. The rooms are grand, well-lit, and arranged in a way that allows you to guide yourself through different eras of art. It is suitable for both large groups of tourists and couples looking for a quieter, more cultural experience. However, because it is one of the most famous museums, it gets extremely crowded and noisy, especially around the most popular paintings. In those areas, the crowd definitely makes itself felt, and it can be quite difficult to find a quiet moment to actually enjoy the art. The staff throughout the galleries is helpful, but only up to a point, as they mostly focus on managing the large flow of people and keeping everyone moving. If you want a more intimate experience, it is highly recommended to look for the smaller, more secluded rooms further away from the main highlights, where you can find very comfortable benches to sit, relax, and admire the art at your own pace. There is also a shop and café areas, though they can get very busy and packed during peak hours. Reorganizing the crowd flow around the main masterpieces would definitely improve the overall experience. Despite the business, it remains a thoroughly impressive place that is well worth your time.
One of our favourite places in London. We enjoy wandering through the galleries, taking in the beauty, creativity and extraordinary range of artistic talent on display. The collection is remarkable, spanning different periods, styles and cultures, with something new to discover on every visit. We have occasionally used the audio guides, which provide helpful background and context. However, I have sometimes found that the narrators miss the intended meaning behind certain works, particularly religious paintings, where the Gospel message or biblical context is not always fully understood or accurately interpreted. Even so, the National Gallery remains a wonderful place to spend a few hours, whether you are an art enthusiast or simply appreciate beauty, history and human creativity.
Highly recommend Fiona Alderton’s International Women’s Day tour. It was phenomenal. She is an amazing educator and guide, and she brings so much insight to the works she discusses. One striking point she highlights is that only 29 of the 2,400 paintings in the gallery are by women, which feels quite shocking given that we are now in 2026 and there is clearly room for the gallery to acquire more work by female artists. Fiona does an incredible job telling the stories behind the pieces and drawing attention to these artists. She is a real asset to the gallery and made the tour engaging, thoughtful, and very memorable.
