Following my appointment as @UKConsularEnvoy there will be no further political posts on this site. Please go to @UKConsularEnvoy for any information on that and related issues. Many thanks for your interest over the years.

Staunch defence of dissenting views. Where was he when I, Nicholas Soames & Ken Clarke, with nearly 100 years of service were silenced as Conservatives by being expelled from the Parliamentary Party for saying things his boss did not like? Did I hear a word of protest?

David Gauke is that rare thing in UK politics right now: brave and alone, putting country before party and, critically, operating outside the support of the UK newspaper editors, many of whom will attack him. Kudos to David. Kudos to his supporters. The historians are watching.

JRM asks MPs to support the Govt in its negotiations. I did. I voted for the conclusions of the negotiations brought to Parliament in the WA. JRM, his friends and current Cabinet members did not. Why am I, having loyally supported, now being threatened and not them?

Rejoiners want to thwart growth and try to pin structural global economic problems on Brexit to engineer a return to vassalage in the EU. They’re transparent, and they will fail.

If true, and it appears to be, it is open and shut for the Conservative Party. Return the donations, end the relationship and ask decent donors to make up the difference. With MPs under threat, and past murders, this is unacceptable. Many Conservative members will be watching.

Reading many of the stories today, I sometimes think I’m one of the luckiest men alive. I still have my Dad. 101, and loved as a family doctor in Bury as much as he is by his family. Perhaps, says the RAF, their oldest living medic. Happy Fathers Day, dad! God bless you. 💕

How dare you call my friends, who gave such service to the country, ‘despicable’.? What does such name calling do? Say you disagree, but this infantile ‘traitor’ or ‘despicable’ is what will divide this country, not argument on merit.

On the Committee are four Conservative MPs and they have majority. I know three personally, and impugning their integrity is deeply ignorant and offensive. And, I’m afraid, rather sinister.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Are we living in an episode of Black Mirror? It appears the Labour led Privileges Committee are now going after Boris supporters. They are completely out of control. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/…
    Readers added context
The committee on privileges has a majority Conservative ( 4 out of 7) membership. The chair only has a vote in the event of a tie between the other 6 members. committees.parliament.uk/committee/289/…

This is a desperately serious error, which the FS should take back. The better answer would have been ‘of course he and France are friends and allies, both in NATO and the cause of freedom: it doesn’t mean we don’t have our differences and need to talk honestly, as I will’.

Liz Truss, the current foreign secretary, when asked if President Macron is a 'friend or foe' says "the jury's out." Significant when France is one of the UK's closest allies.
