This reminds me of when my then 8 yr old in a long white nightdress, with long straight hair came downstairs into the living room covered in nosebleed blood while we were watching a scary movie and i screamed so loud and then she screamed and it was all a mess.

I am increasingly frustrated by comments I am seeing coming back on trainee grants (K99 and K22)- not just my trainees, but others that I mentor. Almost every single one comments on the fact that a lot of the post-docs did not have a publication in the last couple of years. 1/

Spoke to my forever mentor Jeff Trent today. 2 days into his lab, my dad died unexpectedly. JT took me to lunch once a month for the years I was with him to make sure I was OK. He ended today's call with "No matter what you decide, your dad would be so proud." 😭😭 #mentorship

DID WE ALL FORGET THERE WAS A FREAKING PANDEMIC? And that many of these amazing trainees could not physically access labs, and when they finally did so, had to work weird shifts and abbreviated days? Did we forget that while we sat home, they went in, unvaccinated for months? 2/

...but for goodness' sake, can we please cut them a break? I know you are told not to take the pandemic into account, but how can we not? It will reverberate among our young scientists for years to come. So as you review these grants over the next few cycles, be kind. /4.

Did we forget many of them had to juggle childcare and being isolated from family for years if they were foreign postdocs? So yeah, maybe they are taking 2-3 years to get a first author out the door, and maybe their productivity is diminished... 3/

My daughter (13) wrote an essay about school shootings today. She said “I learned how to do lockdown drills at the same time I learned the alphabet.” A small piece of me died a little.

Today we await the notification of award that the P01 I led IS FUNDED!! To the tune of $13 MILLION!! I am over the moon because the 837 pages of this grant don’t even begin to tell the story behind it. I call this the Persistence P01. Gather round, my tweeps- a thread.
