I think the hardest part about coaching HS baseball is that sample sizes are so small; that you need to rely on old school evaluation to inform decisions. It’s very hard to communicate that with players/parents (the hardest part), most of whom exclusively speak GameChanger.

Got suckered into coaching my son’s football team…first practice tonight, I send out a practice plan & all the parents/helpers all have their own preferences & suggestions… Y’all can coach the damn team! I’d just rather be a dad & watch…sincerely - take it.

Stats I actually closely evaluate (small sample sizes): Pitchers: WHIP & First Pitch Strike % Hitters: OBP, BB:K, BABIP (determine progression/regression candidates) I think these are the best you can do with small sample sizes at the HS level. Marry that up with old school.

If you grew up in the Internet age - don’t lie about your sporting credentials. Amazed how many people BS that stuff when it literally takes 45 seconds to verify.

I’m not poo-pooing mechanics when it comes to hitting. It’s important (as long as it’s adaptable/athletic). BUT… Most of you are getting out because you have no approach & swing at bad pitches.

Never ready for the baseball season to end. W-L, Stats are what we get hung up on during the season; but it’s everything in between that matters. This has been one of the best “seasons” in my life. I am unworthy of the blessings, but truly grateful for what has been given.

This is why I like high end academic institutions. At least it’s structurally more difficult to shop around and treat players like widgets.

This is why it’s paramount to have assistants who you trust completely because you need to have someone tell you, “yea, I don’t see what you’re seeing.” Fortunately, I have the two best HS assistants around - I’m biased, obviously - but it’s not close.

100%. “He’s hitting .450!” “The ball hasn’t left the infield.” “He’s hitting .250!” “He has literally lined out 2X a game the entire season.”

Absolutely shows up with elite hitters in high school. It may not “look right,” but every elite hitter I’ve seen is able to make this move when they are fooled on off-speed. It is trainable but requires discipline to not just go on a curveball machine & hack away.

Seriously don’t do this. You can be a really valuable coach without having to outright lie about this stuff. Having played certainly helps…but playing isn’t the same as coaching. Now if you do this to impress people…whoa boy…might wanna reflect a bit.

This is the type of stuff that makes me want my son hanging around a baseball field with older players as much as possible.

UCLA star Roch Cholowsky noticed the hitting coach's son/bat boy was in tears after the team's season ended in Omaha and he took him aside to console him. Incredible stuff 🥹💙

Walk by the dude in pregame…he’s throwing up. Of course he still pitches his ass off for the team. Bulldog competitor.
