Fiona Hill has been a friend & colleague for 20yrs. What you see in her testimony is exactly who she's always been: a person of deep knowledge, fierce integrity, incapable of untruth. The country is lucky that someone of her caliber & character served in this White House.
The correction to today's White House statement on Iran is not a typo; it's an error of unimaginable incompetence. It reflects lack of capacity at the highest levels of this administration to vet information, accurately identify real-time challenges, & devise serious responses.
The pictures of Pompeo grinning, smiling, and laughing with the crown prince—as if a journalist wasn't just murdered—are remarkable. Not only is it bad policy; it's downright embarrassing. It makes Pompeo look like an unserious pushover. It's really indefensible on any grounds
I'll add, there's one screamingly obvious step that the Trump admin can & should take to signal support for Iranians, irrespective of what happens w/these protests: lift the travel ban. Now even more than ever, banning Iranians from the US is unjustified, unnecessary, an affront.
A "journalist" insisting that a "white woman" w/a PhD & decades of scholarship & policy work in her field cannot possibly know anything about the subject is a perfect example of what's wrong with Twitter.
Don't hold your breath on immediate Iranian reprisals; this 👇is exactly the way that Tehran will play the news of Soleimani's assassination, as an opportunity to whip up nationalism & reinforce public support (which has frayed significantly) for its regional military campaigns
A mosque seems to be already full w/ mourners over Soleimani's death. Footage is being broadcasted by state TV's channel 1. A cleric is signing his praises & talking about how his martyrdom will unite the regime. They may have followed morning prayers w/ a memorial ceremony #Iran
Please join me in congratulating @ConStelz who has assumed leadership of @BrookingsFP's Center on the United States & Europe! We're so fortunate to have a leader w/Constanze's brilliant voice & vision at a pivotal moment for policy debates on Europe & the trans-Atlantic alliance.
Ray Takeyh on the uncanny parallels between the 1979 revolution & what's underway in Iran right now. Spoiler warning, the piece concludes that "The new Iranian revolution has begun, we just don’t know it yet."
The Saudi ambassador to the US helped lure a US green card holder to his death, at the behest of the Saudi crown prince. This is organized crime operating out of diplomatic facilities.
There are important interests binding the US & KSA, but business as usual should be over.
From the Department of You Can't Make This Stuff Up -- Today I got a query from a defense contracting firm trying to respond to a quick turnaround request from Centcom for information about the costs of war w/Iran.
