121,000 Ukrainian children have been forcibly removed to Russia, Ukraine’s Ombudswoman says. Now Moscow plans to simplify the procedure for Russians to adopt these children, potentially separating them from their families forever. This calculated cruelty is astounding.

The Azovstal defenders pinned Russian forces in Mariupol until Ukraine won in Kharkiv. Encirclement of Kyiv’s troops in Donbas is now highly unlikely. Their contribution to the county’s freedom is immense. Their sacrifice should be celebrated as heroic. It will become historic.

I spent much of last week with the men and women of Ukraine’s equivalent of US Navy SEALs, elite divers from the 73rd Naval Special Operations Centre, on assignment with @thetimes. The 73rd conduct reconnaissance and sabotage operations deep behind Russian lines… 1/

When I worked at Amnesty we took time on detailed reports putting events in context. Amnesty’s release on Ukraine today does not. The result suggests Ukraine bears more responsibility for people killed by Russian strikes than Russia itself. It is both bizarre and misleading.

A horrifying video of this Russian soldier castrating a Ukrainian PoW is genuine, Bellingcat’s @AricToler has said. The same soldier appeared on a Russian TV clip (with same hat and bracelet) and there was no evidence the video had been manipulated, he told me. #Ukraine #Russia

I spent a week for @thetimes with Ukraine’s elite 47th Mechanised Brigade, equipped with M1 Abrams, M2 Bradleys and Paladin artillery. They told me they’re in “deep shit” in the Pokrovsk sector, where the Russians have advanced 6km towards the Donbas town in just over a week.

On assignment for @thetimes in Donbas, I met recon teams from Ukraine’s Black Forest Brigade, who call in Storm Shadow and HIMARS strikes deep behind enemy lines. Although the Russians are still driving forward here, the brigade is making them pay a heavy price… 1/

I spoke to a Lt. Colonel in Ukraine’s air defence command, who revealed several new facts. First, Kyiv was on the brink of evacuation in Dec due to the intensity of Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. Patriot missiles helped save the city, but are now running out.

Last night family in Kyiv decided to try to run, hoping to protect their young. They had to leave elderly parents with covid, not knowing if they’ll see them again. The EU doesn’t want to sacrifice blood, fine. But not to sacrifice cash and comfort, that’s unconscionable. #SWIFT

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will tomorrow announce the supply of “hundreds of thousands” of artillery rounds to Ukraine as part of a £250 million ammunition contract. It’s intended to “ensure a constant flow of critical artillery ammunition to Ukraine throughout 2023”.
