    The number of UK firms controlled by overseas parent companies (‘inward affiliates’) reached 200,774 in 2024, with 6.6 million employees. Total inward affiliates were up 35.0% from 148,742 in 2020. Read the article ➡️ ons.gov.uk/businessindust…

    Retailing and wholesaling had more inward affiliates in 2024 than any other industry, at 37,221, or 18.5% of the UK total. They also saw the highest proportion of affiliates every year between 2020 and 2024.

    In 2024 the United States was the economy with the most inward affiliates in the UK, at 41,909, followed by the UK offshore islands (31,029), Luxembourg (14,656) and the Netherlands (12,062).

    In 2025, there were 585,396 live births (284,681 female and 300,715 male) in England and Wales resulting in 35,099 unique girls’ names and 30,187 unique boys’ names. The top 10 boys’ and girls’ names account for 9.1% of all births, with Olivia and Muhammad making up 1.4%.

    Estimates of the economic and social value of UK enclosed farmland habitat - crop fields and grassland that help grow our food and feed livestock. Enclosed farmland covered 52% of the UK in 2024, down by 555,302 hectares since 1990, an area larger than Northumberland.

    In 2023, enclosed farmland habitat ecosystem services had an annual value of £5.9bn, with £5.3bn from biotic services and £0.6bn from abiotic services. The total asset value of these ecosystem services was £237bn, with £228bn from biotic services and £10bn from abiotic services.
