Today we honor the memory of Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen, Staff Sgt. Brian Mowery and Sgt. Edward Koehler of the 131st Transportation Company, who were killed in action on July 18, 2011, near Bagram, Afghanistan. #HonorTheFallen

#OnThisDay in 1918, Soldiers of the 28th Infantry Division participated in fierce fighting in France during World War I that earned the division the moniker the "Iron Division." The 28th ID's action is depicted in this painting, titled "Men of Iron," by Don Troiani.

The units fought in small groups inflicting heavy casualties on the advancing Germans. Eventually the position became untenable, and the men feared annihilation or capture. Small groups fought their way back to the division's second line of defenses.

The 109th, 110th and elements of the 111th Regiments were heavily engaged from July 15-20 and fought valiantly in their first action of the war. The actions lead Gen. John Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Force, to refer to the Pa. Guardsmen as “Men of Iron.”

Good luck to Sgt. 1st Class Erich Friedlein of the 166th Regiment-Regional Training Institute, who is competing in the @USNationalGuard Best Warrior Competition this week in Florida. Friedlein won the Pennsylvania state competition and the Region 2 competition earlier this year.

In 2022, the wing transitioned to a new primary mission to fly and maintain the MC-130J Commando II aircraft, which flies clandestine, low-level infiltration, exfiltration and resupply missions.
