It's finally time to announce it. January 2023 I begin my PhD to research and study esports player performance. Over the next few years, my hope is to help establish Canada as a leader in esports performance science.

Depends on intent: Prior to prac, aim training fires up the regions of your brain responsible for skills such as working memory, visuospatial awareness and tracking, reaction time, and other cognitive mechanical brain bits. All necessary to play well and get in the zone (1)

MENTAL FATIGUE is a killer of focus, motivation, energy, effort, and learning efficiency. It's a vague topic that we all intuitively know exists but often don't have a good understanding of its impact on performance/learning. Quick thread on fatigue & what to do about it (1)

There's a lot of knowledge and expertise that you won't find in a book or research paper. These are important but there is also value in learning from experts. Speaking to and learning from those around you is a great way to build yourself as a player or coach.

Post prac, aim training can act as something like a "burnout" set. Scrims are cognitively intense and afterwards the brain is p fatigued out. Post-scrim aim training helps to train the brain how to increase mental effort in response to fatigue/stress, etc. (2)

Being an esport athlete means sometimes you're not going to enjoy the training, the game, or the patch - but putting in the same amount of time and effort regardless is what will set you apart from the rest.

In an interview today, @Licorice from @Cloud9 stated: "It's really hard to say that anyone is leading because everyone is doing their job and talking about what should be done. In a way, we're all kind of like little leaders." Think about replicating this in your own team.

So, pre- and post-scrim aim training has different purposes. Use them both to spice up the training strategies you have. If you try to do post-prac burnout sets too much, you may end up causing actual burnout so it's important to change it up consistently and be deliberate. (3)

The big 30 today for me. The back half of my 20s were some of the hardest years of my life trying to build a career in esports but every moment was worth it because of where it has led me. Here's to an even better next decade. Starting it off right with some kayaking and Val
