In the cold, dark weather and the sound of the drone, my sister Shatha has been studying her lectures saved on her phone. Despite her exhausted body and tired mind, she is writing notes without a direct teacher, desk, books, or a normal environment to support her education.

1/3 When I found myself on a street away from my shelter school in Rafah, trying to connect to the internet, a tidy woman wanted to start a conversation with me. I was frustrated, unable to handle my rage, and obviously in need of help.

I think having small friendly interactions with strangers is so important for humanity

3/3 She hugged me, speaking positive words in a confident voice. Her kindness made her insist on inviting me to her small tent, where she shared a hot meal with her daughters. She filled my heart with limitless comfort, offering a healing that stayed with me for months.

2/3 After a couple of questions, she told me about the horrible night when she lost 90 members of her family in a massive strike. I drowned in a fit of uncontrollable tears, unable to tolerate the pain that filled my heart and surrounded me from every direction.

This is the reality for all Gazan students who have struggled to hold onto their hope, belief, and determination.

If this girl carries a 25 kg bag of flour she would have to walk 2 km with it. I think what if she had her period how did she spend the night after such exhaustion What does she have to do for her father? I don’t know her but I see her in my friends, and in every woman in Gaza.

WATCH: “They brought us here to openly humiliate us,” says Abu Odeh, who watched tanks roll in, bullets crack overhead, tear gas and stun grenades rain down—only 1 in 5 women got any food. The rest got fear and oppression instead of aid.

Before the genocide, our community had a lot of problems largely due to occupation but it also held profound virtues, foremost among them generosity. I’ve lived my entire life among generous people who would never let a hungry family in their neighborhood alone. 1/4

In North Gaza, I taught at three schools, two of which I attended when I was young. The schools have been burned or demolished, and my students have either been martyred or orphaned. My school cupboard still holds gifts I haven’t given to my students yet+

My first splint was at Kamal Edwan Hospital. My first touch of a newborn’s skin was there after my sister’s difficult birth. It was also the first time I recognised other members of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, including the journalist and politician Kamal Adwan+
