Reagan also started taxing scholarships & fellowships for students & faculty… While dropping taxes for the wealthiest. And cutting social security benefits to kids when their parents died. Tax policies can have remarkable impacts.

Smoking gun: The orders from Miller to the DC National Guard for January 6 included in linked article— is a must read. The DC guard were allowed no helmets, no body armor, no weapons. They were not allowed to stop or arrest protesters. Letter orders no interference with rioters

I went to see the oral arguments in the Supreme Court case about presidential immunity on April 25 (Trump v. US). One justice grimaced & interrupted Michael Dreeben every time he tried to discuss the facts of the case (Trump’s role in 1/6/2021). That Justice? Samuel Alito.

1. So what about that Ben Franklin quote that Trump's lawyer, John Sauer, read to the Supreme Court during the Supreme Court case on presidential immunity? Was it accurate? The words are fine, but Sauer's interpretation was deliberately misleading. Franklin would be horrified.

Why aren’t more journalists connecting the train derailment with the train workers’ strike last fall—which was about train engineers being forced to work on such unrelenting schedules that they were exhausted—and more likely to have accidents like this horrific one in Ohio

1/ Can we talk about how problematic Alito’s logic is? Alito reaches back to the 17th c. English Common law to provide a precedent for his decision, but the 17th c. judgments he cites only made abortion a crime if it happened after the child “quickens” or moves (about 20 weeks).

It still took hours. Watch Governor Hogan’s press conference (& interview on @maddow. He’s my governor (Republican,MD). Steny Hoyer (my rep) was calling, desperate. Hogan said yes, but needed Fed. authorization. 1.5 hours to get it, and even then it was outside chain of command.

12. Once again, Trump's lawyers are trying to turn a president into a king. That they pretended that Franklin meant that Presidents should not be tried for high crimes-- is somewhat shocking to this historian.
