This was the front page of UNC-Chapel Hill's Daily Tar Heel. No student, no parent, and no American should have to send texts like these to their loved ones as they hide from a shooter. I'll continue to do all I can to reduce gun violence and call on Congress to do the same.
President Biden views the cover of UNC-Chapel Hill's Daily Tar Heel.

A shooting at the Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earlier this week left a community shaken. In its coverage, @dailytarheel published a front page showing texts between friends, family and others during the shooting. Watch @IAmAmnaNawaz's conversation with @emmymrtin.

I've lost count of the number of texts like these I received Monday. Those messages, which I and every student I know sent/got, inspired tomorrow's front page. If you contributed a message to this project, thank you. It's been a tough two days.

The front page of tomorrow's @dailytarheel – I shed many tears while typing up these heart-wrenching text messages sent and received by UNC students yesterday. Our campus was on lockdown for more than three hours. Beyond proud of this cover and the team behind it.

THREAD: My latest story for the @dailytarheel is a long one. Over the past few years, roughly 200 people have left Chapel Hill Bible Church due to various concerns, including those of emotional abuse, racism and sexism by church leaders.

In some personal news, I won first place for news writing at the statewide 2023 North Carolina College Media Association Conference today for my @dailytarheel story about the allegations of abuse, sexism and racism at the Chapel Hill Bible Church.

Emmy Martin, the editor-in-chief of The Daily Tar Heel, on that evocative front page, filled with a string of texts sent by students as their campus was on lockdown during Monday’s shooting, in only her second week on the job. @emmymrtin

UNC students organized a protest for Palestine on the steps of Wilson Library this morning. Students supporting Israel began to counter protest around 15 minutes into the event. It is still ongoing.

As many journalists have already pointed out, the decision to hide article headlines on this site makes it harder to use — for everyone. Saying this is an “aesthetic improvement” feels like a poor attempt to explain a move that will adversely affect media literacy and dialogue.
